Okay well I have been taught and firmly believe that married people should not have casual sex. Yes I know that intercourse was made to create new human life, a sacred bond between two married people. But then how come many priests have said it is okay to have casual sex to couples? I don’t think its okay to use contraceptives and I don’t think fornication is either.

what is the alternative? formal sex?
and what does this question have to do with traditional Catholicism? do people who prefer the Latin Mass have different moral standards than the rest of the Church? I think not. Why not discuss marriage under the sacraments forum, or moral issues about sex on the morality forum?

Exactly. What are we mere animals that should only reproduce. I can’t have children so should we live as friends, I don’t think so. God made sex, not just to have kids.

You are married and perfectly entitled to have sex with one another when and wherever you want (well, so long as it’s appropriate) so long as you are open to life (if it comes) and sensitive to the unitive dimension of sex (that is you are not objectifying each other)

Maybe they like to whisper little sweet nothings to each other in Latin?😃

Formal sex => Classical Latin
Casual sex => Vulgar Latin

Cracked me up!

To the OP: check out JPII’s Theology of the Body, especially under ‘The Meaning and Purpose of Sexual Intercourse in Marriage:’* As designed by the Creator, the conjugal act is given to married couples as the mode of physical expression for those goods of marriage.*

Casual sex - with one’s spouse - is okay! Sex has a dual purpose: physical expression of love and procreation. You shouldn’t have the physical expression without being open to life, and you should only be open to life with the one you’re married to.

I would think the priest mean procreative (open to life and no ABC) and unitive - shared with each other in unity. An expression of love shared is a good thing even if the ultimate outcome doesn’t produce a gift of a child from God, but does not prevent it in any way if it should happen.

I have always been taught/told that sex between a married couple is always okay when two conditions are met:

1.) The creation of life isn’t prevented

and

2.) It unites the couple.

Just my thoughts,

SG

Well, I do have to admit, I’m just charmed as pie when Mirdath dresses up for me. But it sure isn’t required! 😃

And I don’t think your church requires such formalities either. However, if your spouse does, enjoy it! It’s neato!

This is a new one on me. Here for lo these 45 to 60 years I thought that casual sex was the same as sleeping around with all comers. I don’t think the term really applies to faithful married couples. Maybe the priest meant something entirely different than you picked up. It is important that couples agree to have sex and to abstain when one is just totally not willing, but formal? How do you deal with the tie and tails?😃

so is casual sex in the kitchen instead of the dining-room?
:eek:

I’ve been a Catholic all my life. And I have to admit my absolute bafflement at Catholics and their obsession with sex and the proper way and motives for it. Sex is for more than just procreation. A reading of the Bible would dispel the confusion over sex for every Catholic. Just some random passages to exemplify my point: Take a look at 1 Corinthians 7:5, which reads: “Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.”
Just one more passage open to consideration is Ephesians 5:22-30, which reads, "22Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26to make her holy, cleansingb her by the washing with water through the word, 27and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church— 30for we are members of his body. 31“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”c 32This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband."
That we are human is what sets our sexual acts apart from the lower animals. While the lower animals use sex for procreation, God gave mankind sex for a much greater purpose. It is not only for reproduction, it is also a complete giving of one’s self to the other; a complete sharing of mind, body, love, and devotion. It is how a married couple becomes one flesh. Sex is not conditional; it is not a negotiating tool. It is the sacred gift from God that unites a couple on all levels, for their lifetime. Sex cannot cause one spouse or another to objectify the other. If it does, somebody please explain the passage from Proverbs 5:19, which reads, “A loving doe, a graceful deer–may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be captivated by her love”
Relax, Catholics. Read your Bible. Stop living in fear and enjoy your spouse on all levels. It’s God’s gift to you.

You are operating under a heavily-mistaken perception of Catholicism’s views on sex. We love it, but we also feel that the act should be treated with a certain level of respect. Your comments would be better directed at Protestants.

also, if you’re going to quote scripture, use the bible quote tool, makes it a lot easier to read.

Formal sex is the answer? How would it be approached in such a way? You shake hands before and after? Is it on the clock? Is it a black tie event?

Considering the tread we are on I assume that by ‘respect’ you mean black tie, formal sex. You shake hands ahead of times and ‘let the games begin’, so to speak.
