Catholic Answers Forums Closing

When we add to the inconclusive value of the forums, the significant cost in financial resources and personnel time to host, operate, and to what degree we can, govern them, Catholic Answers can no longer justify the effort.
This bit really annoyed me. There’s no other online Catholic community that I know of. Sure, the “trustees” may not see a value in it but it has a huge amount of value for all those who have used it over the years.

Do these people even have any empathy or those who met their spouses here, those who are here because of loneliness, those who cam’t share their faith due to persecution??? I’m shocked. Sorry if i’m uncharitable.
As I say above, it seems their calculation of the value is not really taking into account the value to the community.

It’s kind of like this community has been here for years, there’s people who’ve been members since the start, people who’ve been here years, and people who just joined and now they’re just pulling the plug.
It’s a real shame.

That’s one of my questions. What other options are there? Could those who are interested start a group on reddit or something like that?

I remember a few years back, someone from CAF did start a new Catholic forums thing. I’m not sure what happened to it though.

Probably because alot of threads end up being prideful “I’m right” threads and another chuck are the repetitive sexual ethics threads

This was unique in some ways in that Catholic Answers is known throughout the world. Unless we actually get them to direct people to a new online community or tell them about it we’d probably lose a lot of users.

Sure. But some of us have been here for years. This site helped me when I was discerning if I had a vocation. As I said I met my wife on here. I’ve interacted with some great people. It’s natural to be sad about losing something that has played a big part in your life.
I already interact with people in my diocese.

Right, but what about all those who don’t have a community around them? To give an example, I’m agnostic and I live in a country which is not particularly religious. The reason I joined CAF is because I had no idea what Catholics believed and I didn’t know anyone who was Catholic to ask.

But reddit is toxic in general outside of catholic subreddits, and is mostly a waste of time.

Very sad. I don’t post a lot but I consider this to be the best Christian forums on the web.
I have learned a whole lot on these forums.

You don’t have to engage with other communities outside of the Catholicism subreddit.

I will probably join this. I think as well there are some on here that I would like to get in touch with before the end of dec.

I’ve joined the reddit community with username AdamP1928.
I wonder if it would be worth getting a petition going to express to the management how important this is to the community here and whether they would at least direct anyone interested to an alternative.

While missing the friendships and interaction, I think it’s a wise decision and will be of benefit to the Church.
If the forum could be migrated somewhere else and not be part of “Catholic Answers” and it’s apostolate. But I think it’s wise for this venue to be separated from that.

I do “get” the reasons they are doing this. But I think giving just a month’s notice and not suggesting any alternative shows how they have viewed this. They also wasted money on migrating the entire forums to a new format about three years ago. Nobody asked for that really. Now it’s costing too much. The problem is that this forum is probably one of the biggest and most popular catholic forums on the internet and it’s a community that won’t be replicated anywhere else.
