“. . . there is need of widespread catechesis and apologetics. We need not apologize for apologetic catechesis. Since its birth, Christianity has been subject to attacks from which it has had to defend itself. Jesus had to answer objections to His teachings, as the Gospels testify. St. Paul had to answer early Christian errors, and charged his disciples to protect the faithful from them while keeping pure the deposit of faith (*). Apologetics has always been part of the pastoral and theological tradition of the Church. We must today be willing and able to defend our teaching in public fora, and we need to equip the faithful so that they can defend their faith. Parish priests must encourage and support the training of lay Catholic faith defenders.”

I am a Filipino, from Laguna, Philippines. Nice work, for here in the Philippines, many are now joining other non-Catholic sects. Most of them are joining Victory Christian Fellowship which is a Born-Again Sect. I hope Catholicism won’t die in the country. More power to you! 🙂

Yes, VCF and a few other Evangelical churches are getting much attention here, thanks in part to those showbiz people they were able to get. It seems that they try to use showbiz personalities as a means to attract people–as if the truth is hinged upon by the number of popular people that belongs to a church.

I have an acquaintance ,a high ranking police officer ,who is a member of VCF.According to him, majority of future PMA and PNPA grads will be Born Again Christians! While the INC has been successfully converting the CDE class, the AB are being proselytized by Born Again Christians.

There are born again officers who are trying to indoctrinate PMAers into their belief. I think that active Catholic teaching should be given to those in the PMA and PNPA as well. I just noticed that VCF is fond of the dramatic, but short on actual theology.

For the Filipinos who are familiar with the show Y Speak on TFC (The Filipino Channel), they are going to discuss “Catholicism: To Be or Not?”.

About the show, they talk about whatever is going on in society. From gangster rap influencing kids to if God even exists. They also have two sides opposing each other so it’s basically a debating show. They already did a show on God’s existence and I don’t really like the people they chose to represent. Now it’s Catholicism!

Most of their guests are not professionals and a person against Catholicism isn’t that hard to find nowadays. I don’t know who they are going to choose to represent the Catholic position. I’m hoping they would bring Karl Keating or some other good apologist, but I doubt it.

I’m scared now. Most of Philippines are Catholics. The show is not good. The show is going to be ONLY about Catholics, so this episode is probably going to be more about backing up Catholic doctrine, debating, etc. What I’m also scared of is them choosing a “professional Protestant” (lack of better names) against a “not so experienced Catholic apologist”.

Anyways, I wanted to make this thread because hopefully someone would record this and put it up online if it’s ok. So everyone could watch. I’m hoping my family is going to leave around this time so I can watch this by myself. I don’t want to hear what my family is going to say as the show is rolling.

This is major right now I think. TFC is the most popular ch among US Filipinos. Not to be mean or anything, I hope my grandma is old enough to not remember what she watched. 🙂

Hello!

I’ve watched this show here in the Philippines. Basically, I think, they try to get the opinion of the average young Filipinos–usually their guests are studying in College or are young professionals.

It would be nice if they find someone who has, at least, the basic knowledge in the Catholic faith to be able to defend it in a public forum like this one. There should at least be some balance in choosing who will be defending each side of the issue. I sometimes get to see some shows showing so-called converts (from the Catholic faith) to other religion for some superficial reason (like they claim that they only got to know a certain truth from their new church----when all the while it has always been a basic teaching in our Church…they just never dug deeper and studied it and gave the Catholic faith a fair chance).

Last time I watched the show, their guests were debating on “live-in” relationships before marriage. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw one of the debaters (a man who many women find interesting) was on the side against it and was defending it quite emphatically basing his reasoning on Church teachings. Just shows one should never judge a book by its cover.

That part of the show was interesting. However, it did show that the values of some of our youth needs serious adjustment. What I found surprising there was how some youth debaters could mention that they go to church but at the same time say that they believe in sex outside the sanctity of marriage.

Unfortunately, I find that Catholic-faith based values are being quickly erroded by what we see on tv. I once saw a television actress trying to get a juicy gossip out of a guest regarding an illicit relationship—she said, “Anyway, times are different now.”, as if that made it already acceptable.

Also, some of the dances and songs I see and hear coming from popular TFC and local shows are not modest at all. In fact, they are very suggestive. I think these are being encouraged by television corporations to hike up their ratings. It is unfortunate that since these shows are rated G (general viewing) and are very, very popular in the country, the bad values we get from them insinuate into the Filipino psyche in a profound but subtle way.

Anyway, I do agree with you. Let’s hope they choose people who can do justice in defending our faith in this show.

God bless!

🙂

Didn’t Y Speak used to have a priest as one of its panelists? Where is he now?

The only worry here is if those who are for the Church aren’t ready to defend their faith. I am sure there would be some anti-Catholics there, like some born again or INC people who would try to challenge Catholic teaching. What we lack here in the Philippines is Apologetics, and that’s where Evangelicals try to score because of this lack. I am also wondering why they no longer have that priest who was a panelist in early Y Speak episodes, when Ryan Agoncillo used to host it.

The show is not anti-Catholic. The hosts are Catholic, I just think they lack getting the right people to represent a side.

Milliardo, the show is in San Francisco (I think) so people they get are most likely from the states, or legal immigrants.

Here is their YouTube:
youtube.com/user/SpeakOutABSCBN

It’s not the whole show, just like a summary. I hope they put the whole show.

What angers me about the show is that it always seems like the bad side always wins. The show always ends up in a draw.

I tried to email them about how some things just shouldn’t be discussed unless they choose the right people. It’s very annoying and heartbreaking 😦

i believe the tilte of the show is “Speak Out” and not “Y Speak”.The former is telecast here in the USA,while the latter is in the Philippines.

guys i just wanna ask about what i have read that the mother of jesus was raped by a centurion named pathera? it is written in the apocrypical books according to them… any comments?

Hi, all of you there ! 😃 I’m glad and feel comfortable that there are many Filipinos participating in this forum. I am new and have that feeling of hesitation to participate. I am also a Filipino, maybe much older than all of you here, and I’m happy to be part of my fellow Filipinos although I’m here in Cebu, Philippines. 👍

In a very short term, there’s no truth to such a thing.

Hi, daraku 🙂 If it is “apocrypical books” , then, those books are outside of the holy bible. These books that are included in the holy bible are the “apocryphal books” as the other denominations used to call it.
