I don’t think that this will happen. It’s one thing to recognize Civil Unions but it’s a completely different thing for any Church to be forced to change it’s rules due to social pressure.
If the Church DID recognize it would Gay Marriage be okay with you?
Of course it’s a different thing.
That won’t stop some people from demanding it though. Nor will it stop them from trying to legally force us to submit to their demand.😦

Have you ever considered that dissent and recognition of such pseudo marriages will lead to suppression and violation of human rights? Do you realize that our Western Society is in danger of dying out?

Wow! I feel proud to be a member of his diocese! I knew we had a great achbishop, but now I know he’s even better!
Praise God, and pray that those two lost sheep realize their mistakes and return Home.

I think the Church will change its posiiton on Gay marriage at about the same time it changes it’s stance on murder, stealing and adultery. This cannot happen as it requires a change in doctrine and that is not possible. Thus your final question is moot.

The Church will never recognize “civil unions” because they are just that “civil”, not sacramental. Anyone in a “civil union”, be they herterosexual, homosexual or polyamourous, is in an objective state of grave sin and thus cannot receive Holy Communion.

What Archbishop Predergast did was the correct thing.

As if it hasn’t happened before and isn’t happening right now in certain parts of the world. The entire Catholic culture of England was forcibly destroyed in the 16th century. The Orthodox Church in Turkey is subject to routine gov’t interference, discrimination, and coercion. At least one Protestant minister has been subjected to legal action in Europe for saying that homosexual activity is sinful.

The slippery slope argument isn’t always a fallacy.

It wouldn’t be OK with me, but on the other hand, I can’t imagine that happening. It’s like asking if the Church turned out to be a false church would I still belong? No. I would fall into despair.

The excommunicated couple could use your prayers too, you know!
Absolutely, I think its important to pray for people who seem to be on a path leading away from God. We’ve all been there at one point or another (and probably will return) so its good to intercede on behalf of persons who might not see as clearly as we do now.

How 'bout this scenario. I get a job at Planned Parenthood, but whenever people come in, i tell them that taking the free condoms is a sin, refuse to prescribe them contraceptions, and refer them only to adoption agencies, never abortion clinics. Eventually, i’d get fired. Do you think the news media would do a story with me as victim? “Abortion and contraception are the source and summit of my life. I’ll always be a member of Planned Parenthood in my heart.” People would think i was nuts.
When your actions don’t reflect your words, people need to call you on it. An excommunication is supposed to be a wake up call.
Unfortunately, our society tends to blame people for making others feel bad instead of coddling them. I hope these men come to the truth and realize that what’s at stake here is not how the Church can make them happy by bending the rules, but how the Church will not stand idly by and support the destruction of their very souls.
