On Church, matters, of course. I think we will be hearing more from them as they stare into the gun barrel of federal health care police.

But I’m not so sure that they are the obvious leaders for political arm twisting.
If they lead Catholics in all matters of faith and morals, then the politicians will be scared to death of crossing us. Politicians in both parties are scared of Catholics not splitting their vote 50/50. If the faithful were lead and actually followed Church teaching, then we would only disagree on the issues that are not Church related. Can you not see how this would change the enire political landscape? Some studies suggest there are around 75 million Catholics in the United States. Obama got 70 million votes to McCains 60 million in 08. Seeing these numbers, you can imagine how the political world would be frightened of a Catholic Church that does not stand divided. I am not saying that the Bishops and Priests should ever tell us to vote for a particular party. Just lead us in faith and morals, then it is up to us to make changes happen.

I don’t agree. I think we are missing an important lay function in this. What JReducaton is saying is that there are boundaries that the clergy will not, and ought not cross. And there are needs, it is clear to me, that will not be met by so bounded a clergy.

Some lay organization needs to step into that gap.

Hey, how about Opus Dei?!

My point is with their proper leadership we will not be lead astray so easily. There would no longer be a Catholic split on abortion, contraception, religious freedom, etc. We are taken advantage of because politicians understand there is a close to 50/50 split on how Catholics will vote. Example. If 90 percent of Catholics voted against any politician that was for abortion(democrat or republican), how long do you think it would be before noone ran on a pro death platform?

This is nothing new, though. Unless you are suggesting that the clergy has not been working on this already. Certainly I agree that the clergy has its hands full teaching Catholic morals to Catholics.

What is new here, I think, is that the bishops are no longer leading from behind but, by virtue of the Obmacare edict, are now facing fines and jail time. (The bishops could only avoid that by rejecting their own teachings.)

Is it time to start building secret rooms in our houses to hide priests?

My original point was that I believe there has been a serious lack of leadership in my life of 30+ years from our clergy. When they stood up this time, I said to myself its about time. I hope this is only the beginning.

Agreed.

I am elated, and encouraged that our bishops are standing up to Obama and the federal government to fight this tyranny. It is high time that we stand up and defend religious freedom. Avoiding the issue would only diminish our dwindling freedom.

The government has been kicking Christian organizations around for too long, promoting their immoral agenda. It is ruining this country. I hope and pray the Church prevails.
