This is way off topic…and I promise I am not trying to sound inflamatory, racists, or anything…I just want an explanation…I keep seeing “African-American” typed all over the place…and the other day I read something Mickey Rooney said, and it made a lot of sense…the people we keep labeling “African American”…how many of them are actually from Africa? I mean…I am of German and Scotch-Irish descent…but I don’t refer to myself as a German-Scotch-Irish American…or I can even take it a step further…Africa is a continent…so I could even call myself a European American which would be accurate according to the way we label black people in this country. Aren’t they just american like the rest of us…IMHO, calling them African American is very devisive…but I could be wrong…sorry, I will get off of my soap box now, and please return to the OP’s original topic.
Well, I don’t really care what you call me as long as it’s not a slur, but many native born blacks want to be called African-American and I think their preference should be respected. Of course, some don’t and you never know who is who, but hey, life is messy. :). But it’s only divisive if you allow it to be.

I used to do that drive all over creation looking for the perfect mass, but I realize that there’s no such thing. Perfect for me is imperfect for someone else. What matters is that I worship God, and be present in my faith community.
well to tell you the truth…if I am not comfortable with the stuff going on no matter how much I am there to worship God I will not enjoy it or get anything out of it and feel uncomforatble…nah I will drive the hour each way to go to a parish that I feel comfortable at that has no abuses in it and no one grabbing my hand 🙂

well that is interesting…they wanted to be called that…even if they are not from Africa?

Ok back to the thread…thanks for sharing!

I hear ya on that…I just have some really, really good black friends, and they always tell me how they dislike being called African American, because they feel it is a term which further separates them from the general American population…I was just wondering how others felt…I try to respect their wishes, but it is good to know there are others who prefer to be referred to as African American…God Bless.

Is someone grabbing your hand such a bad thing? I personally don’t want my hand grabbed either, but it’s not worth being divisive over. If someone wants to hold hands, I will do it out of respect for their feelings. There are enough issues causing strive and division in the body of Christ don’t ya think?

Well, Kendy, you are more charitable than me. I frown at them and take my hand away and put it in a prayer position so they get the picture. :o

Think about this for a second. That person could be visiting the church, and they may not come back because they are offended. Doesn’t say at the end of the cannon laws if any of these laws interfere with love, choose love.

I got to hand it to the evangelicals, I have never been to an evangelical church and not felt welcomed. That’s how they steal our catholics. 😦

But what if I’m the one that’s offended when they try to force me to hold hands? Does it apply to them, to?

yup I would be doing the same thing!

and so what that I am offended by someone touching/grabbing my hand so that I may not return?

Where is the respect for my feelings?
I have no clue where that hand has been.

How about if we don’t play fast and loose with the GIRM and instead of going for personal satisfaction, go Catholic instead.

They don’t steal our Catholics, we give them away.

We have made our masses look so Protestant, yet we don’t do Protestant as well as they do.

Where we are Catholic, we are growing.

Well, I hope you would be more mature than that. My point is take seriously that people often don’t feel welcomed in catholic churches, and the kiss of peace and hand holding is one of the things that makes them feel that way. If it would help someone on their journey, is it not worth it?

Frankly, I think the whole hand shaking thing is silly because it’s not real fellowshiping, but it makes a lot of people feel good. It’s a small sacrifice.

I hope that they would be more mature not to grab at me…plain and simple…lets not lead them down the wrong road in their journey…let us lead by example of what is proper and called for!

they could be giving me alot more than “offense” by holding my hand or attempting to hold it!😉
Sorry, I’m not going to play to the innovators ploy. You know…
YOU, Mrs. traditionalist are not being Christian.

Mrs. traditionalist goes along, head hung,

Five years later, liturgical committee claims handholding was “organic”.

Right! Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me

You know, I just know that the devil is having a good laugh right now. He can only have a good laugh for having gotten us all wound up over something so small. What’s even funnier to him is that we don’t think it’s small. We get all upset and separate from each other over the smallest things, which only weakens us. Instead of supporting ecah other in love, we want to beat each other up over petty stuff, which distracts our attention from the devil’s real treacherous work. And of course, this kills our witness.

Today, I saw a bumper sticker, which said, “I love God. It’s his fans I can’t stand.” And all I could do was pray that I had not been one of those people who drove someone away from “institutional religion” knowing that chances are I had been because I was insensitive or wanted my own way on something small.

Yes, there are rules and they are there to guide us, but there’s a difference between abortion and hand-holding, and we need to have enough spiritual discernment recognize when it’s time to dig in our heels, and when it’s time to say to someone else, “have it your way.”

Kendy
