The Didache states “if you have neither, pour water three times upon the head…” Also when the Apostles went into houses the bible states that they baptised the entire household. This could only be done by pouring water over the head as stated above. However the Catholic Church recognizes both immersion and pouring.

Also when the Apostles went into houses the bible states that they baptised the entire household.
The bible does not however specify exactly where or when the baptisms occured.
This could only be done by pouring water over the head as stated above.
Assuming it were done in the house.

I believe the verses I previously cited are fairly substantial evidence for baptism by immersion.

But here comes that authority/apostasy debate again.
No debate there, only conjecture, speculation and accusations. To be a debate you need to provide some kind of documentation. You guys think you can make an accusation and say, now prove it didn’t happen. The way it works is, you say it happened and then provide proof it did.

Seeking proof is the quickest way I know of to Atheism.

I wouldn’t know. I sought proof and found the Catholic Church.

You really don’t want me to start to provide proof about the founder of your Church, do you?

Ha ha. You’ve already tried and failed I might add. BTW I sought proof of the the LDS church and found it is true. The members are not perfect but the doctrine is sound.

I guess I need remind you, you quit responding. I don’t see how you consider that as I failed.

One failed prophesy, shows a false prophet.
D&C 127.2 contains the following prophecy"…for to this day has the God of my fathers delivered me out of them all, and will deliver me from henceforth; for behold, and lo, I will triumph over all my enemies, for the Lord God hath spoken it."
Am I mistaken, did Joseph Smith triumph over all his enemies or did he die in a gunfight. I know you want to say he was martyred, but dieing with a gun in his hand is hardly being martyred.

John Taylor, who became the third President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, made these statements concerning the death of Joseph Smith:
“Elder Cyrus H. Wheelock came in to see us, and when he was about leaving drew a small pistol, a six-shooter, from his pocket, remarking at the same time, ‘Would any of you like to have this?’ Brother Joseph immediately replied, ‘Yes, give it to me,’ whereupon he took the pistol, and put it in his pantaloons pocket… I was sitting at one of the front windows of the jail, when I saw a number of men, with painted faces, coming around the corner of the jail, and aiming towards the stairs… (Hyrum was shot in the face and was killed instantly, John Taylor continued)
I shall never forget the deep feeling of sympathy and regard manifested in the countenance of Brother Joseph as he drew nigh to Hyrum, and, leaning over him, exclaimed, ‘Oh! my poor, dear brother Hyrum!’ He, however, instantly arose, and with a firm, quick step, and a determined expression of countenance, approached the door, and pulling the six-shooter left by Brother Wheelock from his pocket, opened the door slightly, and snapped the pistol six successive times; only three of the barrels, however, were discharged. I afterwards understood that two or three were wounded by these discharges, two of whom, I am informed died.” (History of the Church, Vol. 7, p. 100, 102 & 103)"
The Lord gave His life according to the will of the Father. The Lord asked forgivness for those who persecuted Him.

Joseph Smith took a gun and fired upon those who went after him.
In D&C 3:4 (given in 1828), we find this: “For although a man may have many revelations, and have power to do many mighty works, yet if he boasts in his own strength, and sets at naught the counsels of God, and follows after the dictates of his own will and carnal desires, he must fall and incur the vengeance of a just God upon him…”
Joseph Smith gave a speech in May 1844, Smith proclaimed this: “I have more to boast of than any man ever had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a church together since the days of Adam.…Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from him; but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet.”
Just 30 days from making that boast, on June 27, 1844; Joseph Smith was shot in Carthage jail.
Deu 18:20 But the prophet, who being corrupted with pride, shall speak in my name things that I did not command him to say, or in the name of strange gods, shall be slain.
Deu 18:21 And if in silent thought thou answer: How shall I know the word that the Lord hath not spoken?
Deu 18:22 Thou shalt have this sign: Whatsoever that same prophet foretelleth in the name of the Lord, and it cometh not to pass: that thing the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath forged it by the pride of his mind: and therefore thou shalt not fear him.
According to the Mormon Doctrine and Covenants 84:1-5, Joseph Smith prophesied a temple, to be known as the city of the New Jerusalem, would be built in the Western boundaries of the state of Missouri. I have bolded parts of this passage, below, for emphasis.
1 A revelation of Jesus Christ unto his servant Joseph Smith, Jun., and six elders, as they united their hearts and lifted their voices on high.
2 Yea, the word of the Lord concerning his church, established in the last days for the restoration of his people, as he has spoken by the mouth of his prophets, and for the gathering of his saints to stand upon Mount Zion, which shall be the city of New Jerusalem.
3 Which city shall be built, beginning at the temple lot, which is appointed by the finger of the Lord, in the western boundaries of the State of Missouri, and dedicated by the hand of Joseph Smith, Jun., and others with whom the Lord was well pleased.
4 Verily this is the word of the Lord, that the city New Jerusalem shall be built by the gathering of the saints, beginning at this place, even the place of the temple, which temple shall be reared in this generation.
5 For verily this generation shall not all pass away until an house shall be built unto the Lord, and a cloud shall rest upon it, which cloud shall be even the glory of the Lord, which shall fill the house.
It’s been 160+ years, has the temple been built? Has that generation passed yet? If it were built tomorrow, will it be dedicated by the hand of Joseph Smith?

One failed prophesy, shows a false prophet.

In 1843, Smith predicted that if the US would not redress the wrongs suffered by the mormons in the state of Missouri, then “in a few years the government will be utterly overthrown and wasted” (History of the Church, Vol. 5, p.394).
President Smith, in concluding his remarks, said that if the government, which received into its coffers the money of citizens for its public lands, while its officials are rolling in luxury at the expense of its public treasury, cannot protect such citizens in their lives and property, it is an old granny anyhow; and I prophesy in the name of the Lord God of Israel, unless the United States redress the wrongs committed upon the Saints in the state of Missouri and punish the crimes committed by her officers that in a few years the government will be utterly overthrown and wasted, and there will not be so much as a potsherd left, for their wickedness in permitting the murder of men, women and children, and the wholesale plunder and extermination of thousands of her citizens to go unpunished, thereby perpetrating a foul and corroding blot upon the fair fame of this great republic, the very thought of which would have caused the high-minded and patriotic framers of the Constitution of the United States to hide their faces with shame. Judge, you will aspire to the presidency of the United States; and if ever you turn your hand against me or the Latter-day Saints, you will feel the weight of the hand of Almighty upon you; and you will live to see and know that I have testified the truth to you; for the conversation of this day will stick to you through life.
Refresh my memory, when did the US government get utterly overthrown and wasted so not even a potsherd was left?

One failed prophesy, shows a false prophet.

Christ founded the Catholic Church.

Joseph Smith founded the Mormon Church.

May the peace of the Lord be with you,

Isn’t there some sort of forum rule against posting long posts like that? I’ve read it through a couple of times and am still just not convinced… maybe you need a different angle?

The real problem is your reasoning relies largely on emotion. Attacking Joseph Smith just isn’t enough. Thousands have tried that all ready. The mob that killed him had the same line of thinking… Destroy Joseph Smith and Mormonism comes to nothing. The trouble is the doctrine he restored stands! They make sense. They fit with the rest of the Bible and Old Testament and clarify conflicts between the two. Following those teachings do help me feel closer to God and Christ.

I have tried to reason with several of the points you list but you seem bent on reposting the same information with different highlights. This does not address my points. Nevertheless I will add one more thought in addition to what I have posted elsewhere.

The 1843 Prophecy was given as stated. America was at civil war 19 years later. For the next four years the US Government was effectively overthrown in the south. By the end of the war the state government of Missouri was overthrown and replaced.

These forums have a cap on how many character spaces can be used.

Did Joseph Smith triumph over his enemies? He said he would
triumph, not his doctrines. Kind of a stretch there, wouldn’t you agree?

So the Civil War was the US government being utterly overthrown and wasted and not even a potsherd was left? Again, a stretch by any means. And it said the US government, not the Missouri governement. See what I mean about stretching to make ends meet?

Where’s the temple in Missouri? Has the generation passed, 160+ years later? Will it be dedicated by the hand of Joseph Smith? Isn’t this prophesy straight from the Doctrines and Covenants of the Mormon Church?

Doesn’t the Church of Christ (Temple Lot) own the property now? Don’t they claim that they are the original restored Church and there was an apostasy of the restored Gospel? Doesn’t that mean the rest of the LDS Churches are the apostate Churches?

Want to answer these questions first or do you want me to go ahead and address some more failed prophesies by your Church’s founder? Let me know.

And these do pertain since you’re challenging the Catholic Church being the only right one with your Church. Wouldn’t you agree? The doctrines you said were strong are filled with prophesies by your Church’s founder.

And you said I failed, but I said you didn’t respond and left the thread. I reposted to here because you quit responding, as I said. Please feel free to repost your responses to these issues.

The earliest Christians were using immersion and pouring. I have never been to a baptism where it was done by sprinkling so I wonder if Mormons call pouring sprinkling? Anyway, there are instances where a person wants to be baptized and cannot be immersed. Health, death bed, huge groups of people to be baptized in a short time (persecutions and all, they had to keep baptisms secret, or die).

Honestly, I don’t know why Mormons believe it has to be done by immersion.

And it’s true, there were women in the diaconate for the purpose of baptizing other women, because they did indeed baptize in sans clothing.
I’ve wondered that when other people went on about it, where is this shown to be the requirement?

The Didache states “if you have neither, pour water three times upon the head…” Also when the Apostles went into houses the bible states that they baptised the entire household. This could only be done by pouring water over the head as stated above. However the Catholic Church recognizes both immersion and pouring.
At last a Catholic belief confirmed: good job ricko:) saddly these truths get quickly overlooked, because “Truth” goes against anitCatholic sentiments and training.

I often wondered how they baptised christians in the desert where there is no water to immerse.

Our Parish supports a Franciscan ministry in the south America. These Franciscans walk barefoot, no running water, no 7-11’s these Catholic priests live just like the local indeginous people, and baptise the Indians there, where no one dares go, in the rivers by immersion.

**The Catholic church does baptism by both immersion, and sprinkling. This sprinkling baptism fulfills the prophecy of Ezekiel 36:25
I will sprinkle clean water upon you to cleanse you from all your impurities, and from all your idols I will cleanse you.26
I will give you a new heart and place a new spirit within you, taking from your bodies your stony hearts and giving you natural hearts.
27
I will put my spirit within you and make you live by my statutes, careful to observe my decrees.

Hey Rick… The Didache (chapter 7) also states you must review all of the Didache teachings BEFORE being baptized. This goes against the teachings of the Church (infant baptism).

I agree with the Church… But… We have to quote and review the entire document… Can’t pick and choose what supports our agrument… In this case water methods, but then discard what it also says about baptism (in the other case, reviewing the Didache).

bad grammer, sorry… tired, but I hope you get what I am trying to say.

wait I’m confused… you guys can’t honestly tell me that the Catholic Church today is the same machine that is was 500 years ago, let alone 2000! It would be blissful ignorance to believe that.
Or simply ignorance…

Did Joseph Smith triumph over his enemies? He said he would
triumph, not his doctrines. Kind of a stretch there, wouldn’t you agree?
No, I wouldn’t. Think about it, the enemies of Christ and the enemies of Joseph Smith had similar intent. Destroy the individual to destroy their church. But similar to those who persecuted and killed the apostles of Christ’s time, the enemies of Joseph Smith merely succeeded in creating a martyr. If I were to follow your short line of logic, that a person must live to triumph over his enemies, one might also conclude Christ had no triumph because he died at the hands of his enemies. Such reasoning is flawed, to say the least.
So the Civil War was the US government being utterly overthrown and wasted and not even a potsherd was left? Again, a stretch by any means. And it said the US government, not the Missouri government. See what I mean about stretching to make ends meet?
I admit that my previous explanation was a stretch but you are still wrong. Allow me to present what I have learned in a more careful consideration of the matter. The prophesy was originally made to Stephen A Douglas and the second half of it was fulfilled.

Regarding the government issue, note that the prophet never used the exact phrase “US government” in the entire prophesy. He first uses “United States” and then “Government” later. Why bother separating the two? Because he intended different meanings. One may argue Government means system of governing therefore Joseph Smith’s prophesy meant the US government but I doubt it. If not the system of governing what did he mean then? Consider this definition:“the governing body of persons in a state, community, etc.; administration.” I hope this definition is acceptable, being the third entry in the dictionary linked.

At this time the US government was largely governed by the Whig Party. Not that no such party exists today and that this party ceased operating in 1856, Thirteen years after the prophesy was made. If we can accept the definition of “government” provided above and that the Whig Party was the governing body, the prophesy mentioned has been fulfilled.
Where’s the temple in Missouri? Has the generation passed, 160+ years later? Will it be dedicated by the hand of Joseph Smith? Isn’t this prophesy straight from the Doctrines and Covenants of the Mormon Church?
I have previously addressed this issue but here we go again. Yes there is currently no temple at the lot dedicated in Independence, Missouri. The one in Jerusalem hasn’t been constructed either. So what?

The generation has not passed. Generation has several meanings and is not limited to any specific period of time. Consider Christ’s statement concerning signs of his second coming in Matthew 24:34.

Your “dedicated by the hand of Joseph Smith” logic does not work if you believe in resurrection or read the verse more carefully and realize it has already happened since it is the temple lot that was to be dedicated by Joseph Smith’s hand.

Yes, the prophesy is straight out of D&C and it has clearly not yet been entirely fulfilled. But then again neither has this. Unless you accept a less conventional meaning for temple. Just for the record, I think both meanings will eventually be fulfilled.

Additionally, I might add that the Lord refers to this prophesy as a commandment later in D&C. Therefore, one might argue that it was a commandment not prophesy. But since the church teaches this city will eventually be built I accept it as prophesy.
Doesn’t the Church of Christ (Temple Lot) own the property now?
Properties change hands everyday why bring this issue up?
Don’t they claim that they are the original restored Church and there was an apostasy of the restored Gospel? Doesn’t that mean the rest of the LDS Churches are the apostate Churches?
You’re digressing here. Such questions about any church are hardly helpful. I might ask similar questions about orthodox vs. roman. But such questions are hardly helpful. To establish the truth of a church we ought to be concerned with doctrine as taught directly by Christ and his apostles and how the teachings of that church compare.
Want to answer these questions first or do you want me to go ahead and address some more failed prophesies by your Church’s founder? Let me know.
I hope my responses are deemed worthy of “answer” quality by catholic standards. If you must address “failed prophesies” in the future please be sure to include the exact history and circumstances around it.
And these do pertain since you’re challenging the Catholic Church being the only right one with your Church. Wouldn’t you agree? The doctrines you said were strong are filled with prophesies by your Church’s founder.
I do not agree. I have no intention of “challenging the Catholic Church” and especially not by your methods. Discrediting another church (or the statements of another church’s prophet for that matter) does not establish the correctness of your own. If you want to defend the catholic church against challengers start with Luther and his 95 theses. I have nothing against the Catholic church and have no intentions to challenge it. However, I will always try to correct misunderstanding and misrepresentation of the LDS church because I am tired of false perceptions about us.

Reviewing your posts I must respond to one more thing.
The Lord gave His life according to the will of the Father. The Lord asked forgiveness for those who persecuted Him.

Joseph Smith took a gun and fired upon those who went after him.
Again look at the history, think about it. Joseph Smith was not in that room alone. You make his actions sound entirely selfish. He was at Carthage with his brother Hyrum, John Taylor & Willard Richards. His intentions are unclear and only he and god know them. His actions were at a minimum in self-defense and may easily be interpreted to be in defense of those who were with him.

No, I wouldn’t. Think about it, the enemies of Christ and the enemies of Joseph Smith had similar intent. Destroy the individual to destroy their church. Stretching hard there friend. I’m afraid I cannot agree that he triumphed over his enemies as I’m sure most on these forums will agree. He didn’t say his Church or Doctrines would triumph, he specifically said, he would triumph.

Now, changing of politcal parties is utterly overthrowing the government and laying to waste so not even a potsherd would not be left? You better go back to whoever told you that and tell them it might be about to happen again next election.
I have previously addressed this issue but here we go again. Yes there is currently no temple at the lot dedicated in Independence, Missouri. The one in Jerusalem hasn’t been constructed either. So what?
Who prophesied the one in Jerusalem would be built again?
The generation has not passed. Generation has several meanings and is not limited to any specific period of time. Consider Christ’s statement concerning signs of his second coming in Matthew 24:34.
You realize the verse you show, references the destruction of Jerusalem and not the second coming which the Lord said no man would know the time. The destruction of Jerusalem took place in 70AD, almost 40 years after Christ foretold it. Also, Moses wandered the desert and was not allowed into the promised land and he wandered the desert for 40 years, or after that generation had passed. Your stretching again. 😛
Your “dedicated by the hand of Joseph Smith” logic does not work if you believe in resurrection or read the verse more carefully and realize it has already happened since it is the temple lot that was to be dedicated by Joseph Smith’s hand.
Hmmmm, so I guess you’re a part of the Church of Christ (Temple Lot) Mormons? They own the land. They also say the rest of the LDS are apostates from the restored Gospel.
Yes, the prophesy is straight out of D&C and it has clearly not yet been entirely fulfilled. But then again neither has this. Unless you accept a less conventional meaning for temple. Just for the record, I think both meanings will eventually be fulfilled.
Are you really serious? I’m posting this scripture:
Mar 14:58 We heard him say, I Will destroy this temple made with hands and within three days I will build another not made with hands.

You realize this was Christ foretelling his resurrection, right? And it did happen, at least Christians believe it did.
Additionally, I might add that the Lord refers to this prophesy as a commandment later in D&C. Therefore, one might argue that it was a commandment not prophesy. But since the church teaches this city will eventually be built I accept it as prophesy.
Again, I am posting your Doctrines and Covenants:
1 A revelation of Jesus Christ unto his servant Joseph Smith, Jun., and six elders, as they united their hearts and lifted their voices on high.
2 Yea, the word of the Lord concerning his church, established in the last days for the restoration of his people, as he has spoken by the mouth of his prophets, and for the gathering of his saints to stand upon Mount Zion, which shall be the city of New Jerusalem.

I’m afraid when someone says word of the Lord as spoken by the mouth of His prophets is a prophesy. Still stretching I see.
Properties change hands everyday why bring this issue up?

I addressed the ownership of the land, it’s a moot point, I think it’s proven to be a false prophesy, in my opinion. Anyone else think that as well?
I hope my responses are deemed worthy of “answer” quality by catholic standards. If you must address “failed prophesies” in the future please be sure to include the exact history and circumstances around it.
Ok. Help me out here abit, what year did Joseph Smith say there were 6 foot quaker looking people on the moon?

The Catholic Church was started by Christ, I certainly hope you don’t attack our founder. Your founder, well we’re still discussing him and his escapades.
Reviewing your posts I must respond to one more thing.

When the Lord was arrested in the garden, Peter cut the ear off one of the guards and Christ told him to put his sword away for those who live by the sword die by the sword. Christ also asked the Father to forgive His persecutors. Christ did not fight His arrest or His death. He gave His life for all.

Joseph Smith pulled a gun and shot people coming after him.

Remember that stretching thing?🤷
