Catholic hatred

Before I returned to the Church I frequented atheist forums. They seemed to dislike evangelical protestants and Biblical literalists more than Catholics. They harped on the child abuse and sex scandals in the Church more than anything else.

However, when I returned to the Church I got some serious hatred for leaving the atheist ranks. Some were simply perplexed, while others seethed. I tried to make my case, but you know how it goes.

I have found that people who are truly atheists (as they claim) are often respectful of Catholics because Catholics take definite positions based on belief, not emotion. They are respectful because I think, for one reason, Catholics are respectful of them. I respect the atheist because he takes a position and doesn’t just exist in some intellectual never, never land or some emotional storm of feelings based on simple “verse slinging.”

I guess much of the Protestant dislike of Catholics started with Martin Luther…Protestantism has been like a ship without a rudder ever since…they have no universal leadership and have splintered a thousand(s) different ways…maybe that’s part of the reason they don’t like Catholics because we believe the church was founded by Jesus Christ…they can’t claim that…many Catholics who have left the church don’t like Catholics either…one of the main dislikes appears to be that Catholics believe that the Eucharist is the real body…blood soul and divinity of Christ…that does rile many Protestants…mainly the more Evangelical/Fundamentalist ones…but even many of Christs followers couldn’t accept his saying that they must eat his flesh and drink his blood…and so it still goes on…even some Orthodox don’t like Catholics…and I’m sure that there are more than a few Catholics who dislike Protestants…quite a few countries have had real animosity and some even armed conflicts over Christianity…and many Protestants see Catholics as worshiping Mary…and to be fair…when they see some of the festive celebrations…Catholics carrying statues of Mary…praying before statues of Mary etc…and some Catholics are pretty animated in their devotion to Mary…so it’s understandable…if unfounded… why Protestants think we worship her…will Christians ever be united…maybe if there was a world wide persecution…pogrom…where Christians were being exterminated so they became united by a common bond of survival…or the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Why is there so much hatred towards the Catholic church?

On other Christian forums i have looked at, the hatred is intense. They all claim we are idolitrers and our beliefs are unBiblical. They hate the Pope and anything to do with Catholicism.

I have tried to defend the faith too but one gets swamped with abuse etc.

(If in wrong section, please move, thanks)
Remember: This is the Internet. People bash and hate for the fun of it.

There’s a debate to whether people who describe themselves as “incel” ( like the man who drove into the people in Canada) actually exist in real life.

Folks get ginned up with the ability to spew without direct, persona consequences. Doesn’t necessarily mean they are like that IRL.

I am converting to Orthodox Christianity and I don’t “hate” the RCC. I feel the She has abandoned, little by little over centuries, the true mission of the Church, theologically speaking that is. The RCC does more than any other organization in the world to help the unfortunate people of the world and has a beautiful intellectual and charitable tradition that none of the other churches could compare with. Orthodox charities work best in Orthodox countries and despite recent noble efforts to expand on the mission they are still lacking. I feel that the RCC has become spiritually lax (no fasting other then mean on Fridays during Lent being but one example) and that the Orthodox have the right arguments regarding Filoque, Marian devotion, Church structure and many other things. However, this will always be my heritage, as a person of Irish and Italian descent I feel a great warmth for the Church but for reasons I said I can no longer be apart of it and this decision is a very hard one to make, very hard. I never could hate the Church.

Here in Scotland: Old Joke: Q .Are you a practising Catholic. A. No - I’m really good at it.
In this part of the world hatred of Catholics is cultural. It isn’t church attending Protestants who avow hatred of Catholicism but those who normally describe themselves as ‘athiest’ or ‘protestant- but no church connection’. Ironically, these people usually fall into the type described as ‘right wing anti European unionist’. As a socialist who tries his best to follow the One True Church it amuses me that these folks would find unlikely bedfellows in some on this forum.

The biggest argument i hear is that “It is not in the Bible!” When discussing Catholic doctrine etc.
Which Bible? the one Jerome compiled at the behest of the leaders of the church in Rome? The actual only Bible handed down for 1200 years until Luther wrote his own, which is incidentally based on the Roman version compiled by Jerome. What those Protestants are saying is that we don’t believe in ourselves. Beyond ludicrous.
Yep
The actual bible that wasn’t a “bible” for years after Jesus died? Bible=“book”

Jesus isn’t a book, and his people aren’t a book either. The book exists within the whole of revelation.

I forgot about this thread.

I am still however perplexed about this. What is it with this hate complex in Catholicism? (TRUE story, few hate you and even less even know anything about you) It honestly seems like "ah you do not agree… you hate us and Jesus said you would so that makes us true … " uhmmmmmmm.

I see my comments were based upon Blessed B F Sheen’s sayings and he seemed very confused.

So I do not know.

I am always wondering about this too. I grew up Catholic and I don’t remember feeling like anyone hated me for it. I know Catholics always say “hate the sin, love the sinner”. I think the hate some Catholics may feel is from people who hate the Catholic teachings, not the people themselves. Of course, there will always be haters for every segment of society. I don’t see an overwhelming amount of hate for Catholics, at least in my part of the world.

On other Christian forums i have noticed a lot of hatred towards Catholicism

Well, unfortunately you are going to get all kinds of hate on any kind of forum. We actually have a share of it here at CAF. I see a lot of derogatory remarks about protestants, it seems. Not always directly blatant, but the intent is there, no doubt about it.

I notice you are “back”. I know you wrote a post a few days ago that you were leaving this forum. Glad you didn’t. We’ve had a few other people post they were leaving lately. One reply I made was that some people don’t understand a few things. One this is a Catholic forum, those who label themselves as something other than Catholic, often post things that are “adversarial” (do not read, antagonistic). When one does so, one is going to get replies that uphold and defend Catholic teaching and practice. Some take it well, others think they are bring “hated.” Not true although some are not as “sensitive” in their wording of their posts. Not everyone is a diplomat.
Secondly, something that I wonder is, do people not realize that men and women are different in their manner of thinking and posting. Women tend to be more collaborative, seeking to find either common ground or a sensitively stated reply/rebuttal. Men tend to be different, zeroing in on a counter argument, often, not quite so diplomatically stated. It helps to understand that.
I am a writer, I have written dialogue with women as the speaker, and my content editors have often said that the manner in which I have phrased something is not how a woman would speak. Unfortunately, content on this forum is “edited” only to the extent it is flagged for violation of forum rules, and not for diplomacy.
Nice to see you didn’t totally leave.

Edited to say. And remember, posts that are “contrarian” attack something that is both intellectually and emotionally precious to some Catholics. I imagine some posts are “fired off” without a whole lot of “internal editing.”

All good points!

Thanks for the “welcome back”. I had a few minutes to kill, so checked in and posted!

I guess you can’t get rid of me that easily. But I have been doing good limiting my time. Baby steps!!!

Fundamentalist and Born-again Christians hate Catholics because they believe that the Catholic Church is the Whore of Bablyon and the Pope the False Prophet. They also scapegoat Catholics because they see us not Christian, but as Pagans. They also hate Catholics because they go to Youtube Channels and other websites that promote anti-Catholicism and read hateful tracts from Chick Publications. They also believe in anti-Catholic tropes and Conspiracy theories that the Jesuits control things or governments and Catholics created islam.

Chick Publications is a Catholicophobic organization. Some people of those groups that I mentioned read those tracts and start believing what those tracts say and have extreme hatred against Catholics.

Fundamentalist and Born-again Christians hate Catholics
Quite a blanket statement. Sure, some fundamentalists and born again Christians hate Catholics, same with some Eastern Orthodox, Lutherans, Presbyterians and Dutch Reformed- and all for variable reasons.

But I don’t think its accurate or useful to make such a sweeping statement.
