Perhaps off-topic, but I’ve wondered about the “homosexuality is not a sin” response.

How does one validate that he is truly a homosexual? Does the identification of homosexuality follow from certain factors?

Also, what percentage of instances is homosexuality aligned with (the cause of) sinful behavior? 95% of the time?
Not off-topic at all. I think some people act like the language police where they jump about how homosexuality is not a sin.

A simple check of the dictionary will prove that homosexuality is a sin:
ho·mo·sex·u·al·i·ty
/ˌhoʊməˌsɛkʃuˈælɪti, or, especially Brit., -ˌsɛksyu-/ Show Spelled[hoh-muh-sek-shoo-al-i-tee, or, especially Brit., -seks-yoo-] Show IPA
–noun
sexual desire or behavior directed toward a person or persons of one’s own sex.
Medical Dictionary
ho·mo·sex·u·al·i·ty definition
Pronunciation: /ˌhō-mə-ˌsek-shə-ˈwal-ət-ē/
Function: n
pl -ties ; 1 : the quality or state of being homosexual
2 : erotic activity with another of the same sex

Clearly homosexuality can reasonably be interpreted as an act and thus a sinful action.

Thanks for that bit of research, Canadianguy. That should put an end to one of the most common replies I’ve seen on CAF. And that’s a little wishful thinking. 🙂

I don’t see that the definition provided proves that homosexuality “is a sin”, period. It illustrates that, by one definition, it is a sin (when it refers to “behavior”). A “desire” (the other definition of homosexuality) is not a sin unless it is intentionally “entertained” and/or acted upon.

As the CCC makes clear (2357-59), homosexual attraction/desire is a “trial” for many - it is not something they have freely chosen.

In the context in which I most often see it used in Catholic circles (such as this thread), it is used to refer to same sex attraction - or sexual desire for the same sex. And in that sense, it is not a sin, in and of itself. It is a disordered sexual attraction.

However, while I understand the common usage and don’t usually make a big deal about it, I prefer the more precise “same sex attraction” which helps to avoid potential confusion.

Regardless, I hope we can all agree that referring to people with same sex attraction as “homos” is not acceptable - which was at least my primary concern

Right - I think the point is that it’s legitimate and accurate to state that homosexuality is a sin.
As the CCC makes clear (2357-59), homosexual attraction/desire is …is not something they have freely chosen.
I don’t think the CCC says that, does it? I know ex-gays who have told me that they chose their identification as homosexual. This brings us to my previous questions – what indicates that a person is a homosexual?

I think we’d say that a desire to have sex with someone that you’re forbidden to have that kind of relation with is a sin.
“homosexuality” is used to refer to same sex attraction - or sexual desire for the same sex.
Again, I’d use a comparison of a married man who desires to have a sexual relationship with another woman. Or an adult who desires to have sex with a child. No “behavior” has transpired, but it’s still a sin.
And in that sense, it is not a sin, in and of itself. It is a disordered sexual attraction.
I don’t understand how a desire for pedophilia, for example, could not be sinful – even if it’s not acted upon. This desire comes from the mind – it must somehow be permitted there. That permission is a sinful act. Now we could say that the “disorder” is mentally uncontrollable and therefore not sinful. That means it’s a mental disorder/illness. So, we could accept such things by saying “all homosexuals are mentally ill”. Certainly, acts that are experienced through compulsion or non-conscious impulses are not sinful – but that kind of compulsion is something more than an ordinary temptation.

Again, it’s very much the same as compulsive thoughts about having sex in any other forbidden avenue. If we’re saying that this is a condition that should be given medical treatment, then that’s quite different than merely saying it’s a temptation.
Regardless, I hope we can all at least agree that referring to people with same sex attraction as “homos” - as one poster did - is unacceptable.
I guess it depends. I still do not understand enough about why we call people with sex-compulsions anything at all – but there’s a “community” of such people who insist on being called “gay”. They also call themselves “queer” – which was a term of derision and now is used as an identifier. Why not “homo”? What does it refer to and how do we know?

What makes a person a homosexual? How is it scientifically proven that a person is this thing?

As I see it, the term is self-declared and it follows in 99.9% of the cases from gravely sinful behavior which is justified and then claimed as a defining characteristic of the person.

Can a doctor insist that a person who has never had sexual relations with anyone is a homosexual – merely because the doctor thinks there are “same sex attractions” present?

I think it is a good move. I just hope that Catholic schools across the country start to apply this rule evenly and don’t just target homosexuals.

I believe that the Dean should have resigned when he decided to get married.
Children learn by example and he was certainly an example of what a person should be or how he should behave.

Is there a trend of Catholic schools becoming more strict about this “walk the talk” standard?.
I don’t know about a trend, but I know my old grade school principal was fired for being gay. He was celibate, not in any sort of relationship, and completely in keeping with Catholic teachings. I liked that guy. Spent a lot of time in his office because I wasn’t well liked and other kids regularly plotted to get me in trouble. So I’d wind up in his office, but he saw through the other kids, so detention never really felt like detention. About the time I entered college, someone found out that he was gay and lobbied to have him fired. The superintendent of Catholic schools, who I know personally, probably jumped at the chance to do so.

The point being, if they’re firing people who are actually following all the rules, but just happen to be gay, then it would be no surprise that there is a trend.

She. Juddy is a she.
I’m surprised this is nationwide news, I know this woman personally. She’s a friend of the family and a wonderful person and was a terrific Dean. She kept her personal life out of school and is a devout Catholic. She traveled out of State to get married because she was trying to keep it quiet. Some idiot took a picture at the wedding and had it leaked.

As free-thinking as Massachusetts is, we couldn’t even bring ourselves to save this dedicated woman’s job? Her personal life and her career are not connected and should not have been drawn together. I feel like this is discrimination- job termination over a wedding? Over love? It hurt me to hear about Judd’s misfortune, but I suppose she should have been expecting it.

On another note, I go to Catholic High School and I’m taught that homosexuality itself is not the sin- it is Homosexual acts that are the sin. Look it up, that’s the popular belief, I think.

You’re a student in a Catholic school, so it’s kind of an interesting thing.
I’m glad there is a Catholic school there and you are attending.
When you think about it, though, the Catholic school is supposed to have a special reason for why it is there. There are many schools. Some of them are Catholic schools, and that makes them different – for a reason. When you think about your education, in this particular school, it’s very good to think about that reason and what it means and why it is what it is.

Matthew 5:28 points that sexual desires, even when not acted upon, are already adulterous in nature and thus a sin.

Indeed, and by getting married she proclaimed publicly that she has gone beyond homosexual inclinations into homosexual acts. (Marriages are public record, so it is more than someone took a picture and leaked it). Therefore the Catholic school let her go for persisting in public sin which is against the mission of the school.

Right. But that’s only when you let those desires fester, or when you encourage them. Not when they randomly pop into your head and you fight them back.

It is impossible to be a “devout Catholic” and even believe in, much less participate in, a same sex “marriage”. She’s a dissident, Cafeteria Catholic, at best. And, if she’s unrepentingly engaging in sexual activity with another woman she shouldn’t be presenting herself for Communion, much less leading a Catholic school.

And, no, I’m not judging her soul, just her (apparent, via the news story) actions. And, yes, Jesus would do the same. He’d forgive her, but say “go, and SIN NO MORE”. (yes, the same as He would do for me, and you, and all of us).

In Christ,

Ellen

Right. But that’s only when you let those desires fester, or when you encourage them. Not when they randomly pop into your head and you fight them back.
Individuals such as the dean who proclaim themselves homosexual (or whatever politically correct term you prefer) are already past the point of some one with a random thought of sin. Its such a shame that some one exposed to a Catholic environment daily as she was never picked up the Church’s stance on abnormal sexual behavior. Given that some of the kids actually stood up for her, one has to wonder if they were even told the church’s position.
