The Pope does not make the truth. You are certainly free to disagree with him. I disagree with him all the time. But he does have teaching authority. You cannot say that you have the authority to say what the Church may teach, and the Pope does not.
 
How can it have “no” weight? At a minimum, it reflects the Pope’s view of what is acceptable for Catholics to believe, doesn’t it? He did not say that Catholics must support civil unions; but it certainly means he believes Catholics may do so.
 
And he’d be wrong. Do you agree or disagree?
Is the Pope right about whether Catholics can accept civil unions? That is a bit of an odd question to me, because it is his place to say that, not mine. I think it is within his authority to say so, if that is your question.
