A very conservative/traditional and long established (started in the mid to late 1800’s) periodical is “The Wanderer.” I believe it’s a weekly out of Minnesota.

It depends what you are looking for in a periodical. Is it Catholic news? Secular news from a Catholic perspective? Something more intellectual? Something more accessible? Something geared towards apologetics? Something geared towards catechetics?

Here are my recommendations:
I would definitely recommend against subscribing to National Catholic Reporter. If you’re looking to “balance out” your perspective by looking at liberal Catholic mags, you’d be better off with America or Commonweal than you would with the Reporter. The Reporter’s only saving grace is John L. Allen, Jr., their Vatican correspondent. His articles can be fair at times.

I am looking to subscribe to a Catholic magazine. I guess I’d be most interested in a publication that has more things about living a Catholic life in today’s world, as opposed to ones that are strictly apologetics or scripture based. Is Catholic Digest a good one? Any other recs?

Thanks!

Faith and Family!

It is what I call Family Circle Catholic Style.

I love it, alot of my friends subscribe to it as well.

I’m not renewing my subscriptions to several magazine since it’s too expensive. I want to scale down and have less mail and less ‘stuff’ around my house, also.
If you could pick one or two ‘readable’ authentically Catholic magazines to subscribe to, what would they be? Hopefully, the cost will be affordable, as well.

Thanks for any suggestions, and please–only list those magazines faithful to Church teaching.

This Rock and Envoy are good apologetics magazines.

This Rock, the one the Catholics United for the Faith put out (whose name eludes me), and Homiletic and Pastoral Review. First Things used to be good (though it also covered other religions), but since Neuhaus died it’s been turning into a right-wing The New Yorker.

This Rock is great, very happy I subbed and only wish it was monthly instead of by-monthly…but its the only one I am subbed to so I cant say about any others.

I really like This Rock, Latin Mass Magazine and The Rosary: Light & Life (The bi-monthly periodical put out by the Rosary Confraternity).

This Rock and Envoy are good, as well as Homiletic and Pastoral Review. First Things is good, although not as easy to read, and to keep up with Catholicism around the world, The Catholic World Report.

I receive The Catholic Answer every 60 days and love it. I picked up a free copy at Mass one Sunday. After, being afriad I might miss a copy, I just ordered it. There is so much helpful and interesting material in it.
