Yes, and we are still called the Catholic Church. Always have been and always will be.
Not according to you. Opposite your name, on the upper right corner where it says “Religion” you have written “Orthodox.” All the appellations of your various Churches are followed by “Orthodox.” Only rarely do we see “Orthodox Catholic.” Maybe you can spread the word and get that changed. Until you do, the Catholic Church is the only Church that is universally referred to as “The Catholic Church” by its adherents and other intelligent people. In addition, of course, there is the pejorative ‘Roman Catholic Church,’ but that’s a misnomer.
BTW you still haven’t answered my question. Since in later times different descriptors were added the names of various Catholic Churches, such as “Melkite” or “Chaldean”, does that mean they are not “catholic” and not part of the original Church?
Sorry. Of course not. I consider all Orthodox Churches to be Catholic Churches. Always have, always will.
Of course. We wouldn’t be in communion otherwise.
Then all Orthodox Churches support a right to abortion? All celebrate Easter on the same day? All are, straight down the line in doctrinal agreement with each other? I don’t know enough to say one way or the other so I’ll take your word for it.

We also self identify as Catholic, we simply don’t use that term often on these forums out of respect for Catholics and to avoid confusion.
LOL! Seriously?? You’re letting Catholics push you around, 9-2? Since when?

Can we be honest? You identify yourselves as Orthodox. Period!

If I understand this correctly, most Orthodox believe that St. Augustine was wrong on several counts, and some call him Blessed Augustine (not St.) because of that.
Most Orthodox believe things that are wrong on several counts and a search of this thread will tell you that. ‘Blessed Augustine’ is one of them.
That is why I don;t see it as convincing to bring up St. Augustine’s teaching in a case like this.
Are you sure you’re a Catholic, Sid? You always seem to take the Orthodox position. Are you sure you’re not an Orthodox who has identified himself as Catholic to try to get a little traction for his ideas?

Something’s a little fishy here.

As I said, for us the term Catholic is simply assumed. Simply because the name of the United States of America is often shortened to just “America” does that mean we are no longer united nor composed of states?
Sorry. Of course not. I consider all Orthodox Churches to be Catholic Churches. Always have, always will.
So what you consider to be the case has bearing but what we Orthodox consider ourselves to be has none?

None of them support the right to an abortion. BTW, when did you stop beating your wife?
All celebrate Easter on the same day?
Except the Church of Finland.

You were just suggesting to Nine_Two that if he believed he was Catholic then he should change his religion to “Catholic.” So which is it?

No sale, Joe. The judge will never admit that into evidence. You call yourselves ‘Orthodox’ and Orthodox you are.
So what you consider to be the case has bearing but what we Orthodox consider ourselves to be has none?
What you call yourselves, Joe. I have always considered the Orthodox a part of the Catholic Church. A separated part. Separated by those smidgens of difference we are forever arguing about. If you want to be the Orthodox Catholic Church, start calling yourselves that and no one will have to assume anything. This is another argument about nothing. Now let’s see you come back and say it’s all my fault.

An Orthodox told me differently, but as I said, I’ll take your word for it.
Except the Church of Finland.
Then what’s all the ‘new calendar/old calendar’ stuff? Or did one side kick the the other side out and claim they are not Orthodox?

Of course. Like I said, we wouldn’t be in communion otherwise.
Then I’ve been misinformed and some Orthodox have the wrong information.

You are, indeed, confused. I didn’t say that. It’s message #220. Take a look.

The date of Pascha is the same whether you are on the old or new calendar. The Church of Finland is the only Church on the Gregorian Calendar so they celebrate Pascha on the same day as the Catholic Church.

So currently there are three calendars in use in the Orthodox world and we are all in communion with each other.

Only because they are forced to by the state.

Glad to hear it (I do not hold my poor efforts in high regard either)

prodromos, I read the document you suppose proves your case and ended up rolling on the floor in laughter. Really???! Do you really suppose any intelligent person is going to take this anti-Catholic screed as any semblence of truth? No sale, my friend, You’re going to have to do much better than this to convince me or any objective person.

An objective person, perhaps.

You, never.
LOL. Don’t say that, Joseph. I’m not a unreasonable man. If you make a convincing case to me I will recognize it and respond accordingly. So far it hasn’t happened. But don’t give up. I’m all eyes.

I’m sorry, what case am I trying to prove? You posted the St Irenaeus quote and I asked if you had read Abbe Guettée’s analysis. I wasn’t aware I was making a case.

I agree that much of his work betrays a strong polemic tone, but merely declaring it to be anti-Catholic does not render what he wrote as untruthful. What do you see as the fault in his analysis of the statement by St Irenaeus?

I’m not selling anything. I am surprised that you place yourself in the same context as an objective person however. I must admit that it caused me to chuckle a bit.

Unfortunately, this post has made me realize that our Churches are far from reunion indeed. 😦

I don’t see a reunion happening for 100 years at the least…If I am alive I will be quite an old man…

I didn’t say you were unreasonable, but you are certainly not objective and neither am I. We are both partisans my friend. We both see the world through heavily colored glasses.

In Christ
Joe
