Antoher simple solution is praticing custody of ones own eyes when they see something they don’t like.
Are you implying that it’s too extreme to adopt the basic dress code of St. Peter’s Basilica?

Are you implying that the sight of a shoulder is too much for a man to take?

I don’t Denise. I just responded to this topic. I have never chastised anyone for their dress at Church. I have thought they were wrong. And if those thoughts were sinful, I own up to them.
As for myself, during the cold months of the year, I wear a suit or slacks and a sweater. During the warm months, I wear a button-down shirt and slacks. Nothing fancy, just a little more dressy than my daily wear.

And I think that’s reasonable. But in the summer, I don’t think a women wearing something with shoulders like this his is casue for anyone to be scandalized:

Note I am not talking about the length (I think it could be longer, or the overall fit)

I don’t think it would matter.

This is interesting. The common thing in culture nowadays is to publically shame others to get them to conform & accept cultural norms. People want to claim no shame is the way to go, but then ironically will go the distance to shame people unwilling to conform to a fallen culture.

A priest addresses a situation without naming the person in question to maintain anonymity & privacy, & he gets bashed for doing the right thing.

I am no fashionista, but the outfit looks nice to me.
Perhaps we all need to focus more on praising and glorifying God at Mass, and less about who is wearing what. 😇

Depends.

If they have a shoulder fetish, yes.

Dressing OBJECTIVELY immodest is a distraction. It’s distracting for some, and perhaps not for others. But it’s a distraction at the least.

Plus, it’s NOT just for women. Men showing their shoulders in Church is inappropriate too. The Church dress code for St. Peter’s is the same for men and women. Men cannot wear tank-tops to Church.

Even today, if you go to a Jewish synagogue, you can’t have your shoulders exposed. My wife is a Reform Jew and when women in her family attend a wedding mass (or any service at a house of worship, whether Christian, Jewish, etc) they ALWAYS wear a shawl around their shoulders if their dress shows their shoulders.

Why? Because they understand it is wrong for a man or woman to bear their shoulders in a house of worship.

People want to blast the Catholic Church for a custom that is over 5000 years old, but say nothing to Jews and Muslims who practice this every single day in their houses of worship.

Heck, you don’t even have complaints about Jewish synagogues that require men to sit on one side of the aisle and women to sit on another.

It’s really insane.

The style is nice & modest, but the color & pattern are ugly.

I brings shawls for head covering as well as for modesty - & warmth. I get cold easily.

I have hypothyroidism so I get cold easily, but will occasionally get hot flashes. The shawls are nice for modesty as well as warmth.

One would not be allowed in St. Peter’s Basilica wearing that unless she has a shawl.

If it’s not good enough for the Pope, why is it good enough for Jesus?

And I’m fine with that. I’m there to give glory to God - not draw attention to myself.

My daughter loves that style of dress, and she looks nice in the dresses, but I always tell her “take a cardi, you’re going to get cold!” Most churches in USA are air-conditioned and it gets cold when you are sitting still.

If it’s not good enough for the Pope, it shouldn’t be good enough for Jesus
So all the women who wear something like that in the summer and the pastors who allow it are somehow disrepecting Jesus? The 80 year old ladies in their Alred Dunner culottes and matching tops aren’t good enough for Jesus because their arms are showing?

And I also think those rules are in place because St Peter’s is a tourist attraction with people of all faiths (or no faith) coming to see it. I lived in NY for almost 15 years. Ever see how tourists dress sometimes?

Pretty sure those outfits would pass the Pope’s rules…not many Alfred Dunner outfits are spaghetti straps, most are tanks with short-sleeves designed to be worn over them. and the bottoms cover the knee. I wear them all the time (although I’m not 80) 😉

The thing is that while at mass we glorify God for giving Himself wholly to us out of love & for our salvation. We should do likewise in everything for Him - including our dress.

All of you have expressed incredulity that bare shoulders lead men to thoughts they can’t control. So I’ll ask you this: if a man told you with humility and senerity that bare shoulders actually do prompt thoughts and feelings of lust that he doesn’t have control of, and that these can then lead to the sin of willfully cultivating lustful thoughts, would you believe him? Would you respond with charity and a desire to help a brother of yours grow closer to Christ? Would care enough about his soul to try to remove a near occasion of sin for him at least in a holy church?
