I agree but I think it started before that. I can’t say that for sure because I wasn’t yet alive. I do know my mother had a very bad experience with a nun and a priest in her grammar school in the early 1950’s, but this was not in the US. We immigrated to this country in the 1970’s so my knowledge of American Catholicism is limited. My husband has an uncle in Mexico who is a priest. He has some told of some experiences similar in the church there. This isn’t just a local problem. It seems to be international.

Priests and Bishops have made it a Catholic thing. I have no problem with the Church being purged and if that means collapsing, and the remnant reorganizing, that is what it means. We need to be protesting en masse about this.

What did they do when they discovered Judas? Did they just transfer him to another parish with more children?

No, he killed himself.

The trouble with our current situation is it’s a Judas layered upon a Judas. So one sinned and the other covered it. They are both equally at fault and equally corrupt. Doesn’t change what the Church teaches, what the Church is, or anything of that nature.

I guess I could understand leaving over this if they added: Though must touch little children sexually, into Church teaching but that’s not Church teaching. Never was, never will be.

Right… there isn’t just 1 Judas in the Church today. There could be as much as 8% of bishops and 8% of priests who are bad.

All the Judases work together to cover up, promote each other, and to confuse well meaning priests & bishops.

I understand that there will always be a Judas figure and that none of us have avoided experiencing at least one moment of being Thomas or Peter. But those incidents were not hidden or denied. They were not practicing a culture of secrecy or shuffling the offender to a new, unknowing community.

Absolutely. It’s a concentrated attack by the enemy working through these priests that said yes to evil.

Which Saint/Pope was it that made reference to the snake having sneaked into the Church? Because I think it’s obvious that’s happened. It does not mean the Church must fall, only that we have some house cleaning to do.

Part of that could have been due to the Church listening to psychiatry at the time. There was a LONG time where it was believed sexual offenders could be ‘rehabilitated’. Couple this with a deep desire to forgive and you have the perfect recipe for disaster.

Again, what was done was wrong but that doesn’t change Church teaching or that the Church contains the deposit of our faith and our truth.

It could be. That doesn’t explain the shaming of victims. If you dared to say what happened to them, they were berated and tod how evil gossip and lies are. They were told that no “man of God” would ever do something like that. That nuns were innocent just as the Virgin Mary herself. We still see that the bishops and others have recently called a child victim “rubbish” in Australia and the pope said he wouldn’t listen to gossip or rumors in Latin America. It is time that the faithful stop seeking excuses for this or explaining it away. We need to call for this to end and push for that to happen. Fasting, prayer and action need to be combined in order for any real changes to ever happen.

Yeah, I’ve seen that mentality even here in this forum. When people speak out about priests behaving badly in their respective parishes they’re told they’re sinning for bad mouthing the priests and to shut up and be silent.

Not right when that happens. Either because of serious abuses or lesser abuses because it creates this very culture we’re now reeling from.

What happened here is beyond revolting.

I hope excommunications and jail time are in order for anyone who was part of this crime against our faith.

I am catholic. I understand that our priests are the ones that call the shots at their parish. What I don’t understand is how anyone can think that would include abuse and shaming those that have been abused. I really need to step away from here for awhile as I fast and pray. It’s probably good that school starts tomorrow and I will have a classroom full of 5 year olds to focus on. I will never leave my faith. I hold tight to Jesus. I would not be upset if the Church as a whole became much smaller and far more transparent. St. Francis once rebuilt our Church. Praying he inspires Pope Francis (or someone else in our time) to do the same.

let’s say

IF those priests confessed their sin in reconciliation, that confession then is to be kept sealed in the sacrament. Just as any sin would be sealed in the confessional.

That said

Can the confessor, make as a condition of forgiveness and absolution to the confessee, that they give themselves over to the police?

Canon law explains http://canonlawmadeeasy.com/2008/12/04/can-a-priest-ever-reveal-what-is-said-in-confession/

There are, to my understanding, rules against who is allowed to confess to whom for precisely this reason. It can prevent superiors from doing their jobs.

It is difficult for me to imagine how they could get an accurate forensic evidence of guilt when… " Less than 13% of allegations
were made in the year in which the abuse allegedly began, and more than 25% of the allegations
were made more than 30 years after the alleged abuse began."

You don’t hear about it because it is hidden too. Public school teachers who are complicit are gone and no public school teacher is going to openly admit to such behavior. It is a question of moving on and keeping it as quiet as possible.
I respectfully disagree. A pubic school teacher belongs to a public system and they are prosecuted and not hidden. Besides that, we are comparing apples to oranges here. A priest is held to a much higher standard, especially if they are considered ordained as disciples of Christ.
One, I agree priests are held to a higher standard.
Two, yes, public school teachers are prosecuted and removed and penalized if found guilty
Three, yes they are da*^ will hidden. Public school teachers make page 8 of the newspapers. Accuse a Catholic priest and it is page one on every liberal new media outlet and talk show on the left wing

It’s better in this case to be able to quote the reference.
