What I want to know is how many of these 300 priests are still in active ministry. I’d also like to know which of these bishops are still active. I’d also like to know how they are handling any modern day issues.

We all know that 20, 30, 40 years ago there was a lot of this going on. What about the last 10 years? What has changed? Is it working?

Of these 300 priests it seems only 2 actually face charges today.

But what of the victims coming forward OUTSIDE of the confessional? Why were many of those shamed, silenced, repressed, paid off?

A good chunk of them are dead, I think.

I heard the same. No particulars though. Nor how far in the past this number goes.

Well, I kind of thought some of that also. I didn’t read the report but I heard that most of the priests are deceased, unable to defend themselves.

I make no excuses for anyone. If one are guilty of this crime, they are accountable to the law just like anyone else is.

Not sure but I heard it spans over 7 decades and many priests are deceased.

Precisely.

I likewise heard the same. But the way reporters report the crime, they make it sound like everything is current, and dismiss or confuse the specifics. IOW, they could do a much better job in reporting

It’s just frustrating. While it is good to get this stuff out in the open so that there can be some level of healing, we also need to know what the nature of the problem is today in 2018.

If reforms have been effective in stemming this kind of behavior, then our outrage needs to reflect that important bit of information!

As true as this is, blaming the media seems like a cop-out desu. Ordinary people see that as killing the messenger.

Recently, 300 catholic priests in PA have been found hiding child abuse for decades and everywhere I turn people are saying to end the church because of these nonstop scandals. I know I’m going to be questioned about my faith- and I sometimes waiver why this would happen to God’s church. I know man is full of fault, but why so much in his church? What can I possibly say in reply?

Please, anyone who replies- be kind 🙂
I was just in Pennsylvania 😮

But anyway, people are saying to end the Church because of these scandals? Why does that not surprise me? Many who sees any form of corruption in an institution immediately say that the institution should be torn down, but is this productive? It really isn’t. What we need is reform (not protestant reform, that was a mistake and should not be considered because Christ wishes all of us to be one) and we need it very soon.

The way our Church has been trying to handle this crisis needs to be reformed, how this reform will come about and what it entails is up in the air. What is important to say, when addressing those who say to end the Church, is that while there are people (such as low and high-ranking clergy) who represent the Church (in a bad way) and have done horrific things, we cannot excuse those such as the saints, priests, brothers, sisters, bishops who have clearly represented the Church in a good way and have spread the message of Christ effectively.

Christ has told us to be warry of ravenous wolves:
Matthew 10:16
Behold I send you as sheep in the midst of wolves. Be ye therefore wise as serpents and simple as doves.
We have to find a solution to this problem, and we have to be smart about it. We have to be smart (about dealing with this) and charitable (to the victims of course) and find a solution.

Final notes:

What I am basically saying is that we have to tackle these scandals effectively, and that while the Church right now is swamped in scandal, it nevertheless still has an obligation to preach Christ’s message.

Yes, you are right, @(name removed by moderator). If this was deliberately hidden, for any reason at all, it makes it all the worse. I had thought the Church was doing a much better job of preventing this, but I guess I am wrong. It makes it hard to trust anyone in the Church, especially when the Vatican says, “No comment.” I realize those who aren’t “in the know” need to investigate this, but the Vatican could have expressed it’s sorrow.

They need to talk about Pennsylvania and how they are going to do better. Anything else is going to sound hypocritical right now. The entire Church should be focused on making sure not one child is ever molested again.

Didnt I say to tackle these scandals in the start of that paragraph? I’m basically saying yes, tackle these scandals find a solution. What the OP is hearing from others is that the Church should close and i don’t think it’s right for that to happen.

Only two have been charged, not because they are the only two alive, but because the statute of limitations has run. Personally, I don’t think there should be any statute of limitations on child molestation or abuse, not just for priests, but for everyone. The victims will suffer all their lives.

What is the state of things right now in 2018? Have reforms been implemented? Are they working?

Of the 300 only 2 face charges today. Is this evidence of effect change in PA?

I really do not have a sense of what the current state of things is.

They already said they instituted reform. They have been saying that for years, at least where I live in LA. We haven’t had any scandals, so maybe they are doing a good job here. One thing they could do is no never allow a child to be alone with the clergy. Seems extreme, but I think extreme is needed.
