Obama deserves to win as much as anyone deserves to win anything?

Coming from a self proclaimed realist, who refuses to look at anything but percentages…it’s a rather odd statement.
Not at all. “May the best man win” is an accepted attitude in contests from sports to politics.

Sigh. I never said all Latinos are Cuban. But in Florida, nominating a Cuban/hispanic vice president will help the GOP in Florida. To not understand that is to not understand politics. And among other Latinos - nominate Rubio and you might see a marginal increase in overall hispanic support. In a close election, that might be significant.
Can’t see it working, theyre not that stupid to be placated so easily after what was said about them this primary.
I am sure that many of them will vote for them, but I think Obama will need more than the 60’s liberal ageing catholic vote. What I’m saying is that the others will be more motivated to vote than before. This could well add up to less catholic support overall for Obama. I find it hard to believe that the liberal catholics will be more motivated to get out and vote for Obama this time around (the history thing) but non-liberal or even a-political catholics will likely be more motivated to vote against Obama.
Obama visiting the Dubliner bar today; I see only one grey head there. I am probably safe in assuming most of the crowd is Catholic.

Yes, he will get the Catholic vote again.
No, I just wondering why the defeatist attitude. I am a realist too, but its still a close race and Obama is quite vulnerable for the reasons I’ve laid out in my posts. So far, the only folks I’ve seen come out and say “Obama is going to win hands down, its over” are 1) Obama supporters or 2) bitter Ron Paul supporters (or even some disgruntled Gingrich supporters). If enought people had the defeatist attitude that you display, then Obama could very well get re-elected.
I am neither of the above for the record.

Stating a fact isn’t defeatist, I would argue fighting against the inevitable is the equivalent of sticking your head in the sand.

The simple fact is the people that will vote for Obama outnumber those who will vote against.

The only real vote the GOP can count on is the white vote…which is split along gender and ideological lines to make it much smaller than if whites voted as a bloc like everyone else.

Thems the breaks I’m afraid. 🤷

So what happened in 2010?

How did the GOP win all those seats?

This ought to be good.

I am probably safe in assuming most of the crowd is Catholic.
I wouldn’t assume that at all. I’m sure some are Catholic, but St Patricks Day has basically become a drinking holiday. Even as an Atheist, I wore green and went to bars on St Patricks Day. 🤷

You seem to like to make a lot of assumptions. 😛

Isn’t that what a realist does?

Not all of them - but I’m sure that some of them will realize the historic nature of the first hispanic vice president. It would only take a swing of a few percentage points to change the outcome of a close state.

Yes, everyone who wears green and goes to an Irish pub on St. Paddy’s day must be catholic. Right up there with- " most Americans live in urban areas and don’t drive much" . Your analysis is laughable.
Yes, he will get the Catholic vote again.
He will get the vote of some catholics - I predict he will get fewer catholic votes than before.

Obama’s re-election is inevitable? What part of your analysis proves that? All you offer is half-truths and false assumptions based on “what you gather”.
The simple fact is the people that will vote for Obama outnumber those who will vote against.
You are presenting your opinion as fact and you haven’t even backed up your opinion with much sound reasoning.

Wishful thinking?

And everyone at Mardi Gras is catholic, and everyone who celebrates Cinco de Mayo is Mexican - and Catholic. Don’t you love the logic some people use?

Josephene, I find your posts generally cryptic and hard to follow, but you made some decent points (among your usual seeming obligatory implicit slam against Romney/Mormonism - we get that you don’t like Romney/Mormonism - give it a rest). But the message to the poor from giving food stamps and other services to them is different from the message sent from giving them free abortions - which really is saying, “your life and your unborn child’s life is not worth living.” So good point. I think food stamps are too prevalent such that people who don’t need them are also receiving them at taxpayer’s expense.

Thank you Ishii , at your caring efforts at fraternal correction .

Do recognise your valiant efforts to protect the nation from looming and prevailing evils ; such is the efforts of all who are here , one would assume .

Love protects , does not rejoice in evil , rejoices with the truth …just that , we tend to see the nature and source of these evils , through difft lenses , may be !

We have the occasion to vote for someone who we know stand with The Church , in the most major areas and that too , at this critical time when She is so threatened !

Our efforts to support such a candidate would be part of our responsibility , to persevere for good and hope for the best ; those efforts may be like that of the boy with the five loaves and fish , which were possibly a bit stale , from having been 2 days old ; thus , the efforts of some may seem not that appetising ; yet , The Lord who sees our good intentioned efforts , to share truth ,correct the erring - may He decide what it is all about and make best use of our efforts , to bring only much good out of it all !

Peace !

In the second case… People who were uninsurable under the historical system, have gone into poverty trying to fight severe illness.

No, even if it seems that a second stanza in the Obamian rhapsody is inevitable, it is still his opponents’ duty to put up as good a fight as they have in them. That’s the nature of a loyal opposition in a Quasi-democracy.

To bow one’s head to the “inevitable” (which it isn’t) and wait to be kicked in the teeth is not the American way.

Nothing cryptic or hard to follow about your post. Just great comments all around. Hopefully the Lord make some use out of our efforts as you say. Rick Santorum is a good man, I just doubt his ability to win. He will fight the good fight, yes - and keep the faith as well, but can he run the race to the finish line? I don’t think so. But I respect those who support him - there are good reasons for doing so in light of what it happening now.

Thanks again for your nice post.

Exactly. I have to wonder about someone who neither claims to be for Obama, nor claims to care if he wins. What can we make of someone who doesn’t really care if Obama wins? Do they really know what is at stake in this election? Hard to identify with someone who is that apathetic.

How did the “tax cuts for the wealthiest” (a misnomer, sine they were cuts across the board and a larger percentage cut for the lowest rates) cause the economy to fail?

How did not changing the health care system (iow…maintaining the status quo) cause the economy to fail?

[EDITED: got my discussions confused. 😛 ]
It’s not a misnomer since Obama wanted to end just those tax cuts for the wealthiest until he compromised with those who did not and agreed to extend them temporarily in a Dec 2010 deal when unemployment benefits were extended as well. Supposedly he wants to end the tax cuts for the wealthiest again and his GOP opponents do not. Tax cuts for the wealthy we constantly have shoved down our throats supposedly create jobs. But what they helped create this time was more greed perhaps, but obviously not jobs. That’s how they did not help the economy.

I said the health care status quo we had was unjust and the Republicans never did anything about the injustice when in power. And that was another example of failed policy or more accurately a result of no policy when the Republicans were in power. It took Obama to get them to even talk much at all about healthcare. And then all they did was mostly protest at townhalls.

Now you know you’re not going to get a real answer to this… I’m sure you know by now. Blood from a turnip, and all that. Were you just in the mood to read a few empty slogans for some odd reason? 😉

What?! Bush’s across the board tax cuts were a “tax cut for th wealthiest” because Obama only wanted to reverse the cuts on the wealthiest? That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever! 😛

I won’t get into the specious greed argument, but certainly you aren’t arguing that the cuts hurt the economy, are you? If so, how?

I will be back in November with an “I told you so”.

As far as assumptions, stating one poll as a “majority” takes the cake.

And I am apathetic because it is out of my hands. Caring about which you have no control over is the height of wasted emotional investment. Why I don’t watch sports or complain about the weather. 😃

This will be my first year voting as an American citizen and I would like to ask a few things. Why do so many posts online bash Santorum? Even many Catholics seem to be against him. A lot of people have stated this for Sanorum losing the Catholic vote “Overall, Romney may be winning Catholic voters in these industrial states for the same reason he has won in other states: economic issues”. But I would like to ask, can it be that the fundamental issue that FIRST needs to be fixed is the lack of God and morals which can eventually lead to a better economy? I am confused as to why people want religion not involved with politics, because to me it seems like many of these economic issues might have come from a complete disregard of God in the U.S. including politics.

“I am confused as to why people want religion not involved with politics”. You’re not that confused. You’re pretty much on the right track. Of course God should be placed first, so the only thing that you are missing is that the overwhelming majority of Americans are putting God much less than that. Read today’s lectionary(click) readings. People choose to live in darkness. They have chosen sin. Don’t let the fact that this forum is called “Catholic” fool you. Everyone is allowed to post here, with just some limitations, and everyone includes the many who “self-identify” as Catholic, but are unfaithful, hence, the negative posts against Santorum.

Remember the parables about the Church, such as the Tare and the Wheat (click).

Great question. I wonder the same thing. You should have heard Michael Savage bash him. The problem is, people don’t know their faith. You have many well intentioned conservative catholics who listen more to Michael Savage, Ann Coulter and Ayn Rand than they do the pope and his writings. What’s worse is that some think that the economic policies of the rank and file GOP are perfectly compatible with the church’s social teachings.

The fact that the more “catholic” Santorum is on issues the more he is attacked is proof positive to me that the media and the principalities and powers are inherently anti-catholic/traditional christian be them GOP or democrat. While I agree it is perfectly reasonable to support Romney over Obama, it isn’t reasonable for a catholic to not recognize that Santorum is by far the better candidate on the moral issues.

Yes for sure, but sadly I have read many forums and everyone is crying for separation of church and state (even Catholics) so I am very curious as to what will happen. I honestly thought that there were a lot more religious folk in the U.S. but after hearing everyone cry against religion and theocracy it seems as though there are a lot more atheists in this country and will definitely give Santorum a run for his money.
