There’s nothing to that effect in canon law. It’s not something I was ever taught as a Catholic convert. I thought the obligation was to attend Mass and to give talent and treasure… I’ve done the above but failed to submit sufficient envelopes.

I doubt Canon Law would address how churches keep track of attendance. Ask your priest about the envelopes. There are some at my parish who like to give cash with no way to identify the giver (they don’t want tax credits etc.), The priest said this is okay, but please drop in an empty envelope just the same. You need to check with your parish.

Unfortunately he’s been away for the past month. I’m really hoping to connect with him this weekend.

Weirdly, I toured a Catholic school recently. They don’t care about envelopes. They check the parish roster to make sure that you’re registered, and they verify your involvement in one or more parish ministries.

That seems a reasonable approach. As I said, I’ve dropped few envelopes in (as I tend to give large amounts less frequency)… but I am a special needs catechist in the parish… every Monday…

I can see that being perhaps difficult for parents who are so busy parenting and working to support the family, they do not have time to be involved in ministries.

General update… I did talk to Father and he said he would speak to the principal to see what he can do. But sadly there are no guarantees. There are only so many spots available. We will have to wait and see. Catholic school is a privilege here, not a right…

I’m so sorry it is so hard for you to send your child to the Catholic school. It’s ridiculous to me, when you are in a weekly ministry there, that they have no room for your child. This just doesn’t seem right.

Are there any other parishes with a school where you could possibly change parishes and send your child?

Yep. C’est moi. My life is consumed by things like homeschooling, Scouts, and Little League, (the latter of which has a season fast approaching ) My involvement at the parish is minimal and includes little bitty things like bringing snacks to RE classes and herding cats - er, kids - at the Christmas pageant. For Catholic school enrollment, (in my diocese, at least), it counts. Parishes just need to know that they aren’t just being abused, (i.e. parents claiming to be members but not attending regularly, or at all), for a tuition discount. I can respect that. For dual-income families and any other extreme circumstances, I’d hope that a reasonable parish would accommodate some sort of alternative.

The envelope requirement seems a bit stringent, IMHO.

This isn’t even about a tuition discount. I’ll happily pay full price despite my weekly ministry at the parish… I just want to get in. My question is why are there so few open spots? If there are so many of us waiting in the wings, willing to pay, as the case seems to be, why aren’t the schools bigger?

I could try some of the other parish schools in the region potentially. Would be less convenient… but better than nothing. We’ll see… still praying this will work out.

Hopefully they expand and add more to your area. A lot of people are moving to mid-sized to larger cities and creating growth and, (sigh), the inevitable sprawl. (Urbanization - it’s just where the jobs are). If this describes where you live, you might have success in rounding up some parents to put gentle pressure on your diocese. My own diocese just opened a new one, and we’re on THAT waiting list. Sigh. Demand is huge, even among non-Catholics who respect and appreciate Catholic education.

Especially in some families where only one parent is eligible to volunteer in a ministry.

The principle at stake here is about the nexus between your participation in the parish and your eligibility for the school. Yes, spots are limited, but it would be quite outrageous if the substance and reality of your considerable participation in and contribution to the parish were overlooked in favour of counting envelopes.

In Missouri, school districts get about 9 grand a kid per year. So that comes to $117,000 for K-12.
