Thank you everyone for your posts.

It’s clear that this is a topic that won’t be fixed overnight. After reading all the responses, I’ve realized that my issue isn’t so much that they didn’t have the means to help her, but that the school was left with no choice, but to turn her away. It pains me that there are any circumstances that the Catholic Church must turn anyone away for any reason. Someone commented on this, but I have to disagree, Catholic Schools ARE part of the Catholic Church. If they don’t want to be aligned with the missions of the Holy Church, then they shouldn’t call themselves a Catholic School.

I’m glad to hear there are some parishes out there acknowledging this and making an effort to change. God bless them!

Again, in a perfect world, resources and funding wouldn’t be an issue and all children would be accepted and nurtured. One can only pray…

Every organization can’t serve every possible need of every possible person.

There needs to be more specialization in order to be effective. I don’t know what you do professionally, but normally there are things that one does and does not have the skill set and equipment and facilities for or that are outside one’s scope of practice. An OB/GYN is not a pediatrician, a pediatrician is not a child psychologist, a child psychologist is not a neurologist, etc. They’re not being mean or neglectful when they recognize that they don’t have what a patient needs.

I don’t know what the girl’s family is doing for her, but the pediatrician is a good first stop. It’s important to figure out: what does this child need, and who can provide it to her?

One of my favorite bloggers was widowed some years ago, and I’ve noticed that she and the kids she has at home have done quite a number of big trips together since then. It might be that when the smoke clears, some road trips with daddy in places where she doesn’t have strong associations with her mother might be a very good thing.
