Catholic ten commandments?

These are the actual Ten Commandments given by the Lord our God explained in Exodus 20 see for youself in King James version and many other versions of the bible.

3 (1st com) Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

4 ***(2nd com) Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
7 (3rd com) Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

8 (4th com) Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
12 (5th com) Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

13 (6th com) Thou shalt not kill.
14 (7th com) Thou shalt not commit adultery.
15 (8th com) Thou shalt not steal.
16 (9th com) Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

17 ***(10th com) Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ***, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off…

Now these are the words of God almighty witten in his scriptures that he has given to us. So why is it that you catholics have Omitted the 2nd Commandment, replaced it with the 3rd Commandment, and split up the 10th commandment into two parts and making it into 9 and 10 commandments. Your Church is changing the word of our GOD to suit all of your statues and Graven Images of Christ!!! Is God’s word not sufficient for your chruch? Those who bow before these idols may God have mercy on your souls. Has anyone seen a true picture of Jesus? Then why make for yourself this Graven Images of Him. You are all truly being deceived!

Respectively: Do you own any pictures? Are they considered images or likeness on Earth? If you have a pictue of your children; do you worship them? Your mother or father? We have pictures, not to worship but recall to memory, to allow meditation, and to constantly reminds of of Jesus and the saints. We worship God the Father, The Son and Holy Spirit only. Did God not command Moses to put images on the tabernacle? Exodus Chapter 26.

Hey Apostle, welcome to the forum, I believe God Himself led you here!

Here’s the best I can do…

The simple answer is “yes”, they are different if you list them on a sheet of paper (or a computer screen). The correct answer is that the Ten Commandments are the same commandments under different sub-categorized headings.

Catholics have always understood the 9th commandment to mean not to covet in the sense of wanting someone else’s spouse, it is basically not to covet in the lust of the flesh. Whereas the 10th commandment has always been not to covet your neighbor’s goods or possessions. The protestants decided to combine the 9th and 10th commandments and to break apart the 1st commandment into commandments 1 and 2. They did this to justify their condemnation of the Catholic tradition of using statues and other objects for veneration of the saints - which they just don’t understand. Here’s The Ten Commandments:

One last note: when Jesus was asked which commandment was the greatest he said “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” - Mark 12:30-31

I’m not a preacher and I’m not a teacher and all I can really tell you is what’s happened to me. I found Jesus in the Roman Catholic church and everything in my world changed when I started to pray and live for Christ. Time after time, day after day, I’m growing closer to God in the fullness of the faith that can only be found in the Catholic Church!

Of course this sums up the whole of the Ten Commandments. The first 3 or 4 (depending on how you break them up) pertains to loving God. The rest of the Ten Commandments pertains to loving your neighbor. I’ve always liked that, nice, short, sweet and to the point. 👍

Excuse me but your profile says you are Orthodox. If that is so, then you should know that the Orthodox believers often kiss the icons and bow before them when they enter the church before liturgy. Talk about graven images, it is you guys who make graven images.

Regarding the ten commandments. The Catholic list is just as biblical as that of any other group. We have not removed the second, it is simply part of the first. There is no where in the scriptures that say you must break them down in a certain way. Exodus does not say that ‘the second commandment is thou shall not worship graven images’. It simply says ‘thou shall not worship graven images’. I could easily say you have removed the tenth commandment.

It’s also a praphrase of the central portion of Jewish prayer, quoting Deu. 6:5-9.

Not quite. If you had bothered to read the Catholic catechism, you will note that we agree with the Jews that the 1st Commandment starts off with the Reminder that God brought Israel from out of the land of Egypt, out from Bondage. The graven image thing (also part of the 1st commandment) refers to those Egyptian Gods

Please keep your threads on topic. But you are so wrong, the Church is the one that gave us the canon of the New Testament and preserved it from error, and which had vernacular language translations of the Bible before Martin Luther or the printing press which was invented by a Catholic. Oh, and the original Protestants (Lutherans) use our numbering system for the Ten Commandments.

Oh, and Eastern Catholics developed your numbering system and are in communion with Rome and under the Pope, and use that numbering system. You need to research before spewing your biased hatred.
