Catholic ten commandments?

These are the actual Ten Commandments given by the Lord our God explained in Exodus 20 see for youself in King James version and many other versions of the bible.

3 (1st com) Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

7 (3rd com) Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

8 (4th com) Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off…

Now these are the words of God almighty witten in his scriptures that he has given to us. So why is it that you catholics have Omitted the 2nd Commandment, replaced it with the 3rd Commandment, and split up the 10th commandment into two parts and making it into 9 and 10 commandments. Your Church is changing the word of our GOD to suit all of your statues and Graven Images of Christ!!! Is God’s word not sufficient for your chruch? Those who bow before these idols may God have mercy on your souls. Has anyone seen a true picture of Jesus? Then why make for yourself this Graven Images of Him. You are all truly being deceived!

The catholic bible says the same thing ours does. Is is just that the catholic church puts the first two commandments together and we put the last two together. I guess you could say there are 11 and the two churches group it differently to make it ten, as God’s word says.

Also it might do you some good to know that Lutherans use the same numbering that Catholics use. Also Jews number the commandment all together different then Christians.

The 1st column is how Jews number the commandments.
The 2nd column is how Most Non-Catholics number the commandments
The 3rd column is how Catholics and Lutherans number the commandments

The last column shows what passages of Exodus are used. Note we all use the same passages!!

I know and this web-page Judaism 101 will also show that Judaism numbers the 10 commandments different then Catholics/Lutherans and Non-Catholics/Most Protestant.

From everything I’ve read…it’s just a matter of “tradition”.

Judaism teaches that the first tablet, containing the first five declarations, identifies duties regarding our relationship with G-d, while the second tablet, containing the last five declarations, identifies duties regarding our relationship with other people.

So I believe that what explains the why they (Jews) number the commandments the way they do.

Catholics/Lutherans–follow the numbering that St. AUGUSTINE used

Non-Catholic/Protestant—follow the numbering that ORIGEN used

Look, the numbering of the commandments is a purely man-made thing. There were no numbers in the Torah. Also, the bible was not even divided into chapters and verses until modern times.

What makes you think that your particular group’s arbitrary numbering system is better than my group’s arbitrary numbering system? The numbers are NOT part of the scripture!

In fact, for the first 1500 years of Christianity, the commandments were universally numbered as we Catholics number them. The Protestants, in the meanness of their hearts, wanted to make it easy to accuse Catholics of idolatry. So they re-numbered the commandments to suit their agenda and made it look as if God commanded us not to make images of anything for any reason.

If you have a photograph of your wife on your desk, then by your definition, you are an idolater. But a plain reading of either the Exodus or Deuteronomy versions of the commandments will show that God only prohibited graven images for the purpose of worshipping them.

If not, then why did God command Moses to make a graven image of two angels to sit atop the ark of the covenant, the holiest thing in the Old Testament?

You should learn what you’re talking about before you go flaming people.

I like to bring up the game Monopoly in certain circumstances.

When you pick up a chance card, it reads “Go to jail, Go directly to jail, Do not pass Go, Do not collect $200”

So is it a single instruction, or is it multiple instructions? Perhaps the FULL first commandment is:
Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Which would then make the 2nd commandment:

Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Remember, the verse numbers in the bible weren’t introduced until somewhere around 1200 AD, so using verse numbers to denote individual commandments is not how the Jewish people determined the 10. In fact if you remember, Christianity is an offshoot from Judaism. So who are you going to have faith in that they have it right? The people who came from Judaism, or the person who had a beef with the Church 1500 years later?

BTW, as noted in numerous posts above, the first Protestants, the Lutherans, number them the same way that the Catholic Church numbers them.

Your last piece of advice cited above is worth remembering.

I think you have your facts a little mixed up. The first edition of the King James bible resembled the Catholic bible EXACTLY. You don’t have to take my word for it. You can do a Google search and you’ll find actual images of the first edition of it on the web.

However, because the complete big contradicted the Protestant faith and supported the Catholic faith, verses were changed and books even removed in direct disobedience against adding or removing anything from it’s pages.

And as far as “needing” images and statues to worship … please explain why God commanded in the bible that images of angels be created in His temple?

Secondly, Catholics include, not exclude the prohibition against making idols into the 1st commandment. All Protestants have done is number the commandments differently. So, no one has “changed God’s word,” but merely numbered the commandments differently.

We do not worship idols when we use statues to represent holy persons from Jesus to Mary to any of the saints. They are merely tools for prayer and devotion and not required to adorn any church or home.

For Catholics worship is not worship without a sacrifice, as it is in the Bible. You will notice that whenever there is worship in the OT or NT a sacrifice is being offered. We do not offer sacrifices to statues or paintings or mosaics or other forms of artwork. We only offer the one sacrifice of Christ re-presented on our altars as a part of the worship of God in the Mass.

And please, do read up on what Catholics actually believe before roaring onto a Catholic forum and accusing us of sin. It’s not very conducive to good understanding nor is it fair to us or to you. Thank you. 🙂

By the way, Lutherans have the same numbering of the Ten Commandments as Catholics. I know this because my family members who are not Catholic are Lutheran. Catholics and Lutherans both forbid worship of idols, we include it in the first commandment.

This is true. The King James Version, which I actually really like and use for my Bible studies (Catholic), in addition to the Douay-Rheims and RSV, is based on a New Testament Greek translation by Erasmus, who was a Catholic. :dancing:
