What makes Catholics know their interpretation of the BIble is correct and not Protestants.

What I wonder is why people trust the authority of the Church when it comes to Her codification of the Bible, but not Her translation. Now that’s a question.

Because the Church canonized the Bible. If you trust the Bible you must trust the Church that put it together. Who else would be better qualified or have the authority to interpret? Jesus founded the Church to ensure that we would have access to the truth. That’s the short answer.

It is not an interpretation of the Bible which is correct as the Bible has many parts to it.

There can be multiple interpretations but only one faith with which to understand and interpret it correctly. If that faith tradition came after the Bible was put together then it cannot be the faith tradition of the Bible as the Bible would have to come out of it not the other way around.
What assembles the Bible must be the faith tradition in which to understand the Bible from. So any faith tradition such as Calvary Chapel which was founded in 1965 cannot be the faith tradition that the Bible describes or put together the Bible. This would be like me grabbing the Quran and then starting a faith tradition off of it and then saying I was the original Muslim faith tradition.

Now since only a few faith traditions claim to be founded directly by Jesus those must be examined as any one that is founded by a man and based on the Bible would be man made.

The faith tradition of the Bible must be founded by and based on Jesus and the Bible would be understood by that.

This is why a Catholic cannot say that a Protestant group is the faith by which to understand the Bible. Now if the non-catholic claims to be the original Church which can trace it’s way back to Jesus then I would possibly be worthy of investigation, as our faith must come from God.

For me personally, it is because we interpret the bible the way the earliest Christian writers, the Early Church Fathers (ECFs) did. These were the bishops and others who learned the gospel from the apostles or from disciples of the apostles. They wrote a LOT about what the early church was going through in first few centuries of its existence. They also wrote many very detailed expositions of doctrine, mostly as a reaction to all the heresies that kept popping up. They quoted scripture and explained scripture and defended scripture. I came back to the Catholic Church because I discovered that only the Catholic Church teaches what the ECFs taught.

Mostly, it was that the ECFs clearly and consistently taught and defended the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist.

Here’s the collection of ECF writings that I have:
The Faith of the Early Fathers

Hope this helps,
Paul

Lets go back and look at the life of Jesus Christ in the bible.

Jesus was born from a virgin (Mary) so that he could restore man’s position which was lost after the orginal sin.

To do this God had to lower himself to our new level of sin, so that those who believe and accept Him will be raised at death just like Christ was raised after His death for our sins therefore destroying sin that was not His.

Jesus Christ was raised as Jew, studied as a Jew and then started the new form of religion, Christianity.

Jesus had many disciples, both men and women. Disciples were witness’s of Jesus life and miracles.

But Jesus also selected 12 Apostles, and He gave them the keys to heaven, He gave them the power and authority to forgive sin just as His Father had given Him.

Jesus taught both in the public and behind closed doors only to the apostles.

In John Chapter 6 Jesus was talking figuratively until verse 44 at this point he is not talking figuratively but literally, John 6:66 is the ultimate test of who believes.

many of the disciples fall back to their old ways bc of the hard teaching, behind closed doors Jesus asks again this time to His 12 if they too are going to leave.

Jesus did not just come down 2000 years ago die and go back to heaven, he came and set up a church so that each and everyone of us can have a chance to accept Him, durring the time of Christ not all accepted and for all the disciples that did accept eventually went back to their old traditions bc the teaching was too hard, just like to day Catholics and non Catholics alike splinter away from His Church.

The Bible tells us that the shepherd will lead the flock, and the Pope is the head bishop of shepherd of His Church and our local bishops are our local shepherd. It also says that there will be sheep and goats inside the Church, and God on the last day will seperate the sheep from the goats.

Without Jesus, without His Church I am a goat, the importance of the Church is that through it if we trust in Him that we will be seen as sheep and not goats.

Jesus promised that the gates of hell will not prevail against His Church and as seen from the bible, Jesus gives His authority to his apostles that became the shepherds of the early church that we call Catholic, to answer your question on why Catholicism, because no other Church can make that claim.

Every author and writer of the New Testament were Catholics. The Catholic Church sifted through her many documents and chose which were inspired and belonged in the Bible, thus giving us the Canon of Scripture at the Councils of Hippo and Carthage in the late fourth century. It is her book and Jesus has promised His eternal protection to her and her alone in sending His Spirit to guide her “into all truth”.

In addition to the wonderful prior answers, which of the 33000+ Protestant interpretations would you be referring to ???

We have one which the Magisterium of the RCC approves of. We have hundreds if not thousands of theologians working with the original manuscripts, spending their lifetime studying and verifying each verse and phrase. It is a no brainer and no contest. Our theologians have literally spend hundreds of years getting it right. No other denomination or group of denominations can match that.

Plus it makes perfect sense that the faith that wrote the Gospels and other books of the NT, can properly interpret them as well.

However, most, if not all Christians feel this way.
The key is, IF the Holy Spirit were inspiring these folks for a proper interpretation. They SHOULD all come up with the exact SAME interpretation up to and including every last single verse.

They come up with thousands of differing and sometimes conflicting interpretations, so it can not possibly be the Holy Spirit that is inspiring them.

The Holy Spirit would not tell one group one thing and another something else.

Catholics are individuals. They dont decide things individually on faith.
That is the job of the Church. I dont use that term generically either.

I do not know of any christian who’s bible contradicts another’s.

A great debate starter!

Some points to consider: HAS the Church REALLY interpreted the Scriptures CONSISTENTLY down through the Ages?

A big NOPE! Contemporary Saints disagreed with each other over the centuries and many interpretive debates stil rage.

For eighteen centuries the Church openly assented to the teaching of Creationism and when such a teaching was questioned by individuals such as St Augustine, they were roundly challenged! (READ THE HISTORY BOOKS! These are CATHOLIC historians. ) The current position? A pro-choice, nod-to-the-Evolutionist cop-out!

What curious comments!
References?

You are somewhat correct. Yet your Bible is missing 7 books.🙂
Yes, I know that, but for the ones that are there it is the same. I as well as a deacon at my church wish they had never taken them out. We as well as some other protestants really like those 7 books. I have read 4 of them already and intend to read the other 3.

Concerning human evolution, the Church has a more definite teaching. It allows for the possibility that man’s body developed from previous biological forms, under God’s guidance, but it insists on the special creation of his soul. Pope Pius XII declared that “the teaching authority of the Church does not forbid that, in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred theology, research and discussions . . . take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living matter—[but] the Catholic faith obliges us to hold that souls are immediately created by God” (Pius XII, Humani Generis 36). So whether the human body was specially created or developed, we are required to hold as a matter of Catholic faith that the human soul is specially created; it did not evolve, and it is not inherited from our parents, as our bodies are.

While the Church permits belief in either special creation or developmental creation on certain questions, it in no circumstances permits belief in atheistic evolution.

In other words there is no official teaching on HOW man came to be. Catholic teaching leaves that up to the scientists to figure out how God may have created man. Your statement is therefore incorrect.

Dear awantz,

I am glad you will read the other 3.

You wont be sorry.
