Do you think most Catholics vote “with their faith”? As an example, do you think that most Catholics would choose not to vote for a candidate because of his/her stance on same sex marriage or abortion?

It strikes me that Catholics should be able to make a strong impact on any election and certainly that of our future president. Yet I’ve never seen any census that validates whether one’s religion or religious beliefs do, in fact, impact their voting decisions.

As for me, there is a deep sense of an even more pronounced importance in making a sound decision in this election. There are several people running that are just plain scary and it resounds with the notion that the “end is coming”.

Thank you! for your insight.

I suspect a lot of people, Catholic or otherwise, vote with their pocketbook in mind. They likely seek a candidate they feel will be financially advantageous for them, by promoting jobs in their area or field of work, or by lowering taxes, etc. Fear over financial insecurity might actually trump faith in many cases. I could be wrong about this.

Yes, I believe that most Catholics vote with “their”
faith. That is not, however, the same as voting with the Catholic faith.

I think you are correct to a certain extent, although I know a lot of Catholics who always vote pro-life.

I’ve heard Catholics traditionally vote Democrat. This has been drilled into us since we were children. However, when my Mom was 85 years old she voted for her first Republican because of the abortion issue. I typically vote with my faith.

God Bless You.

Yes that is true. It always floors me how many professed Catholics support abortion, same sex marriage, etc. in complete opposition to Church teaching. Neither party is 100% aligned with Church teaching, but one supports utter evil is the name of freedom and equality. I am sad to say I used to vote for them too. I fully expect I will have to answer for turning a blind eye to the horrors they held up as a virtue.

To the OP, yes Catholics could make a huge impact, but we don’t vote as a block. More telling then professed religion is how often one attends Church.

It was Catholics that got Obama in office so I am sure they don’t vote with their faith in mind. Catholics in the Supreme Court have voted against their faith many times so I don’t have any confidence anymore that Catholics vote with faith in mind.

Yes. This makes me very sad as a convert of almost 8 years to realize this. I was received into the Church 4 months before the presidential election of 2008. I was so disheartened to see all of the Obama parking stickers in the parking lot. I knew he supported abortion. 😦

I look at the five non negotiable issues. Democrats always fail. I never vote democrat.

I checked PEW and 70% of the religious uninfileated voted for Obama and 69% of the Jews did same.

In the last election, Catholics and Protestants were equally divided between Obama and Romney.

It was the Hispanic Catholics that voted heavily for Obama.

Yes, I am shocked to see Obama stickers in the Church parking lot. (Haven’t seen any since 2012). Very disturbed at the Jewish support considering his handling of Israel. Now with the Iranian deal, the Jews here are asking questions. Hope it isn’t too late for us and them.

When the parish priest recently read a letter from our bishop regarding same sex matter that the Church remains same, one attendee shouted out “NO WAY”. Very disturbing for many reasons.

A Supreme Court Justice must base their judgments on whether or not something is legal/Constitutional. If their faith interferes with their ability to serve the people - all of the people - they have no place being on the Supreme Court. It is not a platform to push any religious agenda unless it is supported by the law.

Those Jews you’re talking about are Americans. I’d be more disturbed if they chose Israel over the US.

Israel can take care of itself. It’s not our responsibility to sacrifice an opportunity at improving global stability because they’re uneasy about the deal. We don’t owe them anything.

We can always go to war with Iran, we won’t always have the option to be diplomatic.

It was not Catholics who helped to elect obama. It was “Catholics”. Mouth breathers who pick and choose whet they want to believe. NO staunch advocate of catholic doctrine could ever cast a vote for such a pitiful excuse for a candidate.

Mouth breathers?

By “Catholics” I guess you mean people who call themselves Catholic, but don’t agree with some of the teachings of the Church.

They are called Cafeteria Catholics and some are Obama Catholics for sure then they support his PP blessings. Even some bishops and clergy are Obama fans. Not sure why.

My friend and I were both talking to American Jews about Obama’s attitude toward Israel.
Both of the Jews said the same to us individually, “Israel can take care of itself.” We were shocked.

We got the point of WWII with the Jews. Polish Jews didn’t get the guns they needed from the Resistance. America didn’t help with the Jews on the St. Louis. Our govenment didn’t believe what was happening to them and others by the Nazis. I don’t want to sit back and see this happen again. Israel is about the size of New Jersey and is completely surrounded. ISIS is slaughtering Christians. It will be a blood bath of all. Jews and Christians in Israel.

And do we think they’ll save our shrines and Churches in Jerusalem?

Chamberlin thought same when he signed the treaty with the Nazis. You think this deal is causing global stability? China, Russia, North Korea are all watching. This is taken as a sign of weakness…or stupidity…and they will act. 220 retired generals and others of high rank have pertitioned Congress to stop this deal. And our military is as weak as it was before WWII. Israel wanted to stop Iran after the shah left and we wouldn’t allow it. They got it, we didn’t. And we will pay the price in our men’s blood.

No many Catholics do not vote their faith. That is why abortion, among other things, is still legal in this country

The military is trained to fight wars, not prevent them. The opinion of those retired generals and officers is not very persuasive.

This seems like the ranting of somebody who’s afraid, not a rational argument.

Not all Jews are Zionists and Israel can take care of itself.

This is not the holocaust. Stop equivocating ISIS with Nazi Germany - the analogy doesn’t fit. Nazi Germany was an industrial powerhouse and a technological innovator and ISIS is just barely above throwing stones.

There’s a reason ISIS hasn’t hit Israel - they can’t. They’d lose.

To say ISIS is barely above throwing stones is equivalent to Obama calling them JV. Granted they are not comparable to the Nazis, but we shouldn’t ignore them either.
