This may be true, but I found when I was in the military - my childhood service as an altar boy did not go unrewarded. Through osmosis, I guess, I could remember so many of the readings from daily and Sunday mass - when Protestants would start to “witness” to me, I could quote scripture - I couldn’t give then Chapter and verse, but I could quote the scriptures and explain to them how they were taking things out of context. They were surprised to find non practising Catholic (at the time) who could actually quote scripture.

I make it a daily practise to start my morning with the readings of the day.

Hi,

I’m having a discussion with some “born again” believers and they say that the Catholic Church deprived the faithful of the scriptures—Now I know this is not true but I’m having a hard time finding the correct information–ie when was the first Bible written in English etc–

Cant you help in any way please?

God bless

Jan
Here’s something from my blog…

The translators of the Protestant King James Version, in their ‘Preface,’ refer to previous translations:
"Much about that time [1360], even our King Richard the Second’s days, John Trevisa translated [Scripture] into English, and many English Bibles in written hand are yet to be seen that divers translated, as it is very probable, in that age. . . So that, to have the Scriptures in the mother tongue is not a quaint conceit lately taken up . . . but hath been . . . put in practice of old, even from the first times of the conversion of any nation."More here…

I’ve read the entire Bible, and browse through it when I need reference.
One thing about reading the Bible is, you still have to follow the Church and not your own interpretation, and probably why there was so-many splits in the first place.
One quoting this, another quoting that, this isn’t true, that isn’t true,
So as long as you and your Bible run along two parallel tracks, one the Church and the other your Bible, then there should be no-problem.
But I’m afraid some people that read the Bible went against the Church and decided to get off at the next junction.

Hi Ivornotion,

Yes I know what you mean—the people I’m talking to go by the ‘Bible alone’ theory-it’s heartbreaking to see those scripture passages being distorted to suit their beliefs.

God bless

Hello from drizzly Ireland 🙂 nice to meet you here in cyber space.
Yes that’s part of the problem with self interpretation.

Hi Ivor,

We have to keep praying for them—Lets hope they read that book–from Graham— I’ve mailed them.
