I have left the Catholic Church, and since I have been gone and studying the issue I have been struck by how little most laity and priests really know about church history or doctrine.

It started a few years ago when I looked at the comments at the bottom of an internet article very critical of Pope Francis. These “conservative” Catholics were going on about how evil Martin Luther was. I pointed out that all the things in his 95 points have been eliminated by the Catholic Church (it was all about selling indulgences, after all). They viciously jumped on me and attacked me saying that is not true, when it is a simple fact if history.

I have had so many conversations like that with Catholics I came to see that they really have no idea about the facts of their faith. Like my last parish priest in Salem, Oregon who openly stated in a church group that papal encyclicals are “too hard to read.” I know it’s not all Catholics, but it’s 90 per cent. It is a monument to ignorance. I am not going back, but I suggest those of you who still care work to change that.

Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, indulgences are still doctrinres in the Catholic Church.

There is people who are interested in Church History, and some who have little knowledge of that. But in the general population, who are thoses with enough knowledge of History? Only a small percentage.

I am sure that Catholics know more of Church History than non catholics (except historians of course).

I just have to say…internet commentary is in no way representative of Catholics, or anyone else for that matter. I’m sure you know that already. But I’m just hoping that you haven’t overstated the prevalence or even the importance of your concerns.

Having said that, what brought you back here? Why not stay and start a thread or two about Church history.

Sorry, but I’m probably part of the 90% of ignorant and unhelpful Catholics.

Was there a point to this thread?

I have left the Catholic Church,
We pray every Sunday at mass for fallen away Catholics to heed the prompting of the Holy Spirit to return. I hope you will be one of them.

Doubt you’ll find many of those here.
They viciously jumped on me and attacked me saying that is not true, when it is a simple fact if history.
Well you know, it’s the Internet. So, not sure what you’re expecting in a place that really anyone can literally post anything. You don’t know who these people are, you don’t know what they know or don’t know, you don’t even know that they’re actually Catholics.
I have had so many conversations like that with Catholics I came to see that they really have no idea about the facts of their faith.
That is a gross generalization.
Like my last parish priest in Salem, Oregon who openly stated in a church group that papal encyclicals are “too hard to read.
To be fair, some of them are quite difficult to read. Others, not so much.
(it was all about selling indulgences, after all)
It was about a lot of things, and not really about this thing. Seems that even the person who is saying that other people don’t understand history, is grossly oversimplifying said history.

Actually no, the Catholic Church did not enact any Luther-inspired reforms. And we never stopped having indulgences. It appears that you are the one who is misinformed.
CCC 1478: An indulgence is obtained through the Church who, by virtue of the power of binding and loosing granted her by Christ Jesus, intervenes in favor of individual Christians and opens for them the treasury of the merits of Christ and the saints to obtain from the Father of mercies the remission of the temporal punishment due for their sins.

Well I will pray for you to come back, after all who has the true Sacraments to help us become Saints?
And since you have discovered this truth…Dig more you will be rewarded.
We need to KNOW our faith and our history is of fundamental importance so we KNOW where we came from (Spiritually that is).

Peace!

Actually, they DID stop SELLING indulgences.

To whom it may concern,
Among the most loving, simple, and faithful Catholic persons I have known, some could hardly read and write.
Hard lives lived with generosity and a smile against all odds.
May they be forever held tightly beneath Mary’s mantle . In my heart and prayers.:pray:t2:❤️
