Jesus is God - Agree
Jesus is not God the Father - Agree
Mary is NOT the mother of God - Agree
This is the same thing as saying that Mary is not the mother of Jesus. Which flatly contradicts the Bible.
No Jharek, the problem is this. And I cannot think of any other possible analogy to show you the great difference between humans and the glorious and holy God.

There was a group of monkeys in the jungle that was targetted by a renowned physician for laboratory work on human pregnancy in monkeys. One of them, a uniquely obedient and quiet one was chosen and she was impregnated through test-tubes to carry a human foetus. When the baby was born, all the surrounding monkeys worshipped that female monkey as the mother of humans.

Which really is not totally wrong, because she did carry that human foetus. cos if any monkey appears to question the council of monkeys they will surely scream back “BUT SHE DID GIVE BIRTH TO A HUMAN!” Now…if only monkey could speak human language and tell the doctor. 'SO…EH…WE ARE THE PARENTS OF HUMANITY!..and since you left your book behind during your lab work we decided to teach our people what we want them to know and tell them that the book of humans came from us monkeys.

As for you, we will talk to you through our female monkey and have designated our monkey chief to represent you as vicar.

…and THAT’S REALLY WHAT IS HAPPENING!!!
.
I wish you would give up on the tired monkey analogy. It’s just not accurate. Mary is really, truly Jesus’ mother. The monkey in your story is just a surrogate mother.

And it’s impossible to suggest that Mary was only the mother of Jesus’ human part and not his divine part. There are no parts. As others have said repeatedly, Jesus is 100% human AND 100% divine. If Mary is his mother, she is really his mother, and if Jesus is God, Mary is the Mother of God. Period.

Anything else is either:
a) completely invalid reasoning such as A=B, B=C, but A≠C (for example, saying a boy is a male, John is a boy, but John is not male)
or
c) You have rejected A or B by saying that Mary isn’t Jesus’ mother or that Jesus isn’t God, either of which is heretical belief (in the example, saying that a boy is not a male OR that John is not a boy)

Mosacked, in the introduction to “Mere Christianity,” C.S. Lewis (a Protestant) wrote,
The Roman Catholic beliefs on that subject [Mary] are held not only with the ordinary fervour that attaches to all sincere religious belief, but (very naturally) with the peculiar and, as it were, chivalrous sensibility that a man feels when the honour of his mother or his beloved is at stake.
So you see, it is incredibly insulting and offensive when you call Mary a monkey. It’s as offensive as it would be to me if you called my mother a monkey.

Also, please keep in mind the CAF rules of conduct, specifically (emphasis mine):
  1. Messages posted to this board must be polite and free of personal attacks, threats, and crude or sexually-explicit language, rude comments and innuendo.
  1. Non-Catholics are welcome to participate but must be respectful of the faith of the Catholics participating on the board.
Finally, Catholics do not deify Mary. If you have proof to the contrary (i.e., if you can cite Catholic teaching that clearly states, “Mary is a Goddess” or “Mary should be worshiped as a God”) please provide it. Otherwise, stop making that false claim about our beliefs.

Mosacked: You still have not responded to this post:
Mosacked,

I don’t think you really “hear” what anyone is saying to you.

Name one Catholic who insists on deifying Mary? I know of none.

Indeed, Jesus was conceived through the Holy Spirit. He was fully God. He was also fully man. Mary was the Mother of Jesus. Jesus, though God, came in the flesh. Are you denying that Jesus came in the flesh?

Jesus, the Word, became flesh.

**John 1 (ESV): **14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 ( John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) 16 And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

Jesus was descended from David “according to the flesh.”

Romans 1:
1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures,

3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, 6including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ,

The O.T. contains many prophecies regarding the coming of Christ–notice He would come as a descendant of David, “according to the flesh,” a son of David’s body.

2 Samuel 7: 12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

Psalm 132: 11 The LORD swore to David a sure oath from which he will not turn back: “One of the sons of your body I will set on your throne. . .”

Jesus was “born of a woman, born under the law.” That woman was Mary.

Galatians 4: 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,

To deny that Mary is the Mother of Jesus, is to deny that Jesus came in the flesh, as a descendant of David.

Your denial has serious ramifications, extending to the crucifixion of Christ and His atonement of our sins through the sacrifice of His body and blood.

Bbigam, yesterday I thought about this for quite a while before I slept. I asked myself why are we not able to communicate an understanding on this matter.

And I realise that the problem actually is that Catholics believe that Jesus came from Mary and is not ‘surrogate’.

Well, yes Jesus is 100% human…but then?..are you assuming that the 100% part of Jesus came FROM Mary? Okay, you might retort and say, “why do you then assume that the 100% did NOT come from Mary?”

What I do learn from Scripture is that no flesh shall inherit the kingdom, by that it must mean (since Jesus has ASCENDED into heaven), that the flesh of Jesus is not the flesh that we all know of (since Jesus Himself said “this is the manna that came down from heaven”). Now, the Bible says very clearly that Jesus came FROM Heaven, the conception was by the Holy Spirit, and Jesus Himself declared that He was manna FROM Heaven.

NOW…how does Mary come into play as being the ‘producer’ of that which came from heaven???

NOTHING!..In which case, she was indeed just a ‘surrogate’.
  • For those of you who think the analogy is offensive, kindly sit back and think through the arguments here. It is not to insult but to discuss and reach an understanding.

NOW…how does Mary come into play as being the ‘producer’ of that which came from heaven???
Easy, she said YES, and she became the Virgin Mother of God, Jesus the Son!!!

Why is Mary such a big stumbling block for non-Catholics? You call what we do worship, we do not. You can read Church dogma and teachings for yourself on this subject and you probably have.

It becomes insulting to us when you don’t adhere to the rule Anna sited. You dont respect Catholic beliefs and you ridicule because you are so mich more “enlightened than us”. You don’t have to agree, but you must respect. You disrespect so much so that you make your message inaudible because all we hear is hate. This is not the way to get people to understand your point of view. There is no Christ in your voice, and that is sad.😦

It only cements my views further.

I can’t believe we’re having this debate again. The discussion was settled 1700 years ago! Jesus is fully God and fully man. When Jesus walked the Earth, He was just as much human as the people He interacted with. Your idea of a “different flesh” is ridiculous and based in nothing else than your non-contextual “I just read what it says!”-understanding of one passage in the Bible.

Mary was Theotokos - because if she wasn’t, then Jesus is not Theos.

Mosacked,
Thank you for taking time to think this over. We have indeed been talking past each other. Unfortunately your conclusions are incorrect and highly problematic.
Matthew 1:22-23: All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: “Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son…” - quoting from Isaiah 7:14.

Of course, Mary did not originate God the Son. But she did in fact conceive God Incarnate, Jesus Christ, through the power of the Holy Spirit. It does not say “the Holy Spirit placed Jesus inside Mary.” It says she conceived him - is truly His Mother.

John 1:1-3, 14:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

The Word - Jesus - through whom all things were made - became flesh by being conceived by the Virgin Mary through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Christ is from Heaven, of course. But through a Divine Mystery he was also conceived of a woman and became flesh - true flesh while also being truly Divine.

=Mosacked;5983557]No offense I hope, just trying to make Catholics ‘see’ how some of us think.
1 – If the Sacraments themselves can save, doesn’t that mean that if a deviously evil man were to also partake of the Holy Communion, he would join you in your heaven? (please don’t reply and say he wouldn’t attend because even the evil Pharisees went for baptism at the Jordan river)
*My dear friend in Christ Jesus who IS OUR Savior!

You seems to have some understanding of the Sacraments, however you’re understanding of the effects does not take into consideration of HOW the Sacraments are POSSIBLY made the “source” of saving Grace*.

*The Sacraments that have the “potential to save” are Baptism, Reconcillation, Eucharist, Annointing of the Sick. The other Sacraments, while sources of Extrodinary Gracews, by themselves do not offter the potential of salvatiopn. These Sacraments are Confirmation, Holy Orders and Marriage ***

So allow me please to explain how thse four Sacraments that hold the POTENTIAL [if properly administered and if the one receiving the same is “properly disposed.”[/COLOR] HOLY Communion can and may ONLY be received by a Catholic without unconfessed Mortal sin on there soul!

*You should note that in each of these Sacraments it is THE DIRECT INTERVENTION OF ALMIGHTY GOD HIMSELF, NOT the priest who is but a conduit, [and an instrument used by God] that is making God present, by the Divine Will and Almighty and Unlimited Power of God that effects the results.

The Eucharist is the Real Pesence of Christ! All FIVE Authors of the NT state this belief.* So to not believe is to reject God and His Divenely Inspired words. Not merely not understand; BUT actual Rejection of God Himself.

Eucharist is The Divine Sacrament to which every other Sacrament.; indeed everything Catholic points is

Of GOD!

From God

And to and For God,

that we are the Blessed participants and beneficiaries.'Do This In Memory of Me." [Luke 22:19]
Because Catholics receive the GLORIFIED Body, Blood, Sould and Divinity of Jesus, there can be no greater source of Divine grace:thumbsup:

It is God acting through His Priest that makes this happen.**

*B] Baptism: *Through the Holy Spirit! Removes all of ones past sins one time! As well as the “effects of all sins” Should one die w/o sinning again one would go directly to heaven. [Acts 2:38]

**** The Annointing of the Sick**** hs the same effects as Baptism in it’s total removal of all past sins and there evil effects. Again it tje Action of the HS through His Priest that makes this possible.

***Reconcillation *[John 20:19-23] is another direct intervention of the HS. The words of the priest in Confession are “I ABSOLVE YOU”… NOT I “forgive you.” God does the heavy work👍
2 – If Mary was the mother of God, just because she gave birth to Jesus who is God, doesn’t that mean that if you put the foetus of humans into the body of a monkey, then that monkey would be the mother of humans? (no offense, but it’s the closest analogy I can think of).
***My dear friend are NOT a Bible believing Christian:shrug: READ Luke Chaptr 1 26:36

Jesus is God
Mary IS the Mother of Jesus
Therefore Mary MUST be an certainly is “The Mother of God.” It’s in you’re KJB!***
3 – If the Catholic church is above scripture like what some people here say to explain why they do not follow certain scriptural teachings, wouldn’t that be refuting what God taught? So, is God the master or the disciple?
*We are NOT ABOVE Scripture. we are what and the ONLY Church specifically addressed by the Bible which remains a CATHOLIC BOOK.

Further ONLY the CC Church has the God given authority and guidence of the HS to properly interpet the bible PROPERLY. PERIOD! 👍* [Mt. 16:15-19, Mt. 18:18]
Hope to see some clear and objective answers.

My responce is Clear
Biblical And Historically proveable
and therefore completely 100% objective.***

Lapey,

The respect issue is huge on this Thread. I am really surprised Mosacked has been able to say such offensive things in his OP and in subsequent responses.

I think he is in troubled waters, and needs our prayers. It seems nothing anyone says to him really gets through.

I hope the Catholic forum members will not judge us all by Mosacked’s behavior. He is far from mainstream Protestantism. I really can’t identify his religious affiliation, by the beliefs he has expressed.

I think there is a misconception in much of the Protestant Sector regarding the role of Mary in Catholicism. I really didn’t understand it myself, until I came to CAF. Now, I understand that you do not pray to Mary.

Sadly, there is much anti-Catholic sentiment coming from Protestant pulpits, and misconceptions are perpetuated. That is one reason I think these forums are so important. I need to hear Catholic beliefs from Catholics, not a Protestant Minister or Protestant Bible Class Teacher.

Anna:

Please don’t hold your breath for mosacked to respond. He has yet to respond to my questions.

As for Catholic opinions of Protestants, most of us consider all Protestants as either un-informed, or misinformed. We hold ( at least I do ) all Protestants ( like you ) to be interested in learning what is true and false about Catholicism. What is then explained to them they can accept or reject as they choose, for God gave us all free will. We are not out to make converts or proselytize, but we are joyful and praise the Lord for those that learn and seriously consider becoming Catholic. It is not so much as that most Protestants think we believe the Catholic Church is the true Church, but that we do believe it because Jesus said so. ( he will always be with us ).

In summary, we hold nothing against Protestants, but do object strenuously, almost to the point of anger, when someone like mosacked, and his ilk, come along and strenuously deny the basic tenets of Christianity which both Catholics and Protestant adhere to. I hope this helps.

If you didn’t want to start the debate, perhaps you shouldn’t have posted the question 🤷.

But I agree. Let’s not derail the thread.

…But… if you can give a challenge, I should be allowed to respond with an answer.
If you can give me scripture that gives individuals authority to interpret the bible, please do so. Send me a private message or something. Without a central authority on scripture, everyone simply goes off there own interpretations. Our current mess is the result. Thousands of denominations each claiming they carry the truth.

Answer my challenge first (without resorting to strawmen!) and then maybe we can talk…in PM, yes.
I posted the question because I’m sick and tired of this Goebbels-like “reasoning” * = “Just keep posting the same thing over and over and over and over and over. Eventually, someone will buy it”. It’s an insult to everyones’ intelligence.

His posts are as offensive to Protestants as to Catholics. The Virgin Mary is the Mother of Jesus–the Son of God, the Word Incarnate, who came in the flesh as fully God and fully man. I really can’t imagine how any Christian would claim that Mary is not the Mother of Jesus.

Dan,

I can’t believe you read all 18 pages. This Thread has been a rocky road–some very very good; and some very very bad.

Appreciate your prayers for all of us on our journeys. May God bless and guide you as well.
