Catholics. Is Salvation Easy Or Complicated?

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Reading the above, one understands clearly that sins are forgiven and the gift of the Holy Ghost given upon** Repentance + Baptism in the name of Jesus.**

Meaning, ANYONE (eg. living alone, in desert, in mountain tops, jungles etc) ONLY needs to Repent and be Baptized in the name of Jesus, and he/she will be saved upon receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost. Period.

Question: So, Where and how does the church, pope, mary etc etc come into the picture???

PS. By following Acts 2:38, it seems I don’t even need to know where is the Vatican. Or does someone/some people out there want to tell us that Peter did not complete his sentence or perhaps had said the wrong thing?

Well, since for Catholics, Peter was the first pope, I suppose this would be one of the first official pronouncements of the Catholic Church.

Peter and the Apostles were also given the power to bind and loose sins, and so they are, in part, the agents of repentance, through Confession. That’s where Apostolic Succession in the Church comes in. This faculty is passed down through the line of succession from the Apostles. If you investigate beyond this statement, you will also learn that it is possible to LOSE our salvation if we later turn from Christ. (Mind you, this is NOT the same as earning our way into heaven through good works, which is, of course, not possible.)

Sorry, I must have missed where it said anything about “salvation” in that verse.

So I suppose after being Baptized you stay in the desert living with the wolves. NO community of the faithfuls to live with, do not grow in faith, do not learn about the truth of the Gospel and has no idea how to worship God correctly because nobody there to teach you. You will eventually go in your old way but never mind you had been Baptized.

Well, I suppose it is easy to be saved.

Of course, its not the same thing…Actual Salvation occurs only after the 2nd coming, Receiving the Holy Spirit is a promise for Salvation.

Its like giving you a ticket for a concert. Having the ticket is not the same as attending the concert. BUT…I’m not asking you if they are the same!

I’m asking you if it is easy/complicated to get into the concert.

I did ask and I got to admit sometimes finding answers to these questions is like asking a politician to comment on something he doesn’t want to talk about.

That emboldened bit…?..You should have told the to stop pussyfooting around and explain it to you in simple language…or admit ‘they’ do not know!

I hate the ‘car salesmen’ approach of some in RCIA. On the other hand, they do try to speak in terms acknowledging the varied backgrounds of those who have come Home!

It seems you’re saying, “once saved always saved”, based on one verse of scripture. Can one receive the Holy Spirit and not receive salvation? Only Christ can judge that. If we look further in scripture, we see Paul trembled over his own salvation, after he had received the Holy Spirit. Does that make him a “rejector” of what the “guy” had already said? Since Paul tells us to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling, THINK. Doesn’t that make you a “rejector” of what the “guy” said?

My point is, you cannot piece meal God’s word to fit a theology. One has to fit their theology to ALL of God’s word.

The people gave you a slightly incorrect answer. Having no mortal sins may be enough to go right to heaven in some cases. The full answer, however, is that most people will require some stay in Purgatory. Purgatory removes the remaining attachment to sin that we all have. So, even if I am in a state of grace (no mortal sins to confess), I still have an attachment to sin that must be removed, either on earth or in Purgatory. Further, even without mortal sin, most people have venial sins that need to be cleansed as well.

The full answer, however, is that most people will require some stay in Purgatory. Purgatory removes the remaining attachment to sin that we all have. Now I am confused. Were you told that even after Purgatory, some will not go to heaven? Did someone tell you that you could go to hell even if you were in a state of grace?

To be “saved”, you must follow Christ. It seems like an easy thing, but is it, really? The simplicity (which is the word I think you were looking for) is clear. It’s complicated by our own God-given free will. If we would just do what God requests…

How many times have you known what God requests and have done something else? Every time you’ve acted against His will - in the things you’ve done and the things you haven’t done - you’ve made it complicated.

God’s request is beautiful in its simplicity.

Human life is complicated and messy. Thank God for His mercy.
