Seems like it would be called Paulism and Paul came after the Twelve Apostles. Does that mean is it different from what the Twelve taught?
There are four gospel accounts consisting of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The gospel of John is the most doctrinal of the four accounts. In addition, the gospel of John is the most Calvinistic book in all the Bible. 😉 I think you should study the words of Jesus on these issues.

dont worry stephen. paul did teach what the other apostles taught. and it was not calvinism. 1rst corinthians 15:1-2 Now i make known unto you, brethren, the gospel which i
preachedto you, which also you have recieved, and wherein you stand; 2 By whichalso you are saved, IF you hold fast After What Manner i preached unto you, unless you have believed in vain. just like Jesus and the 12 conditions are attached to our redemption and ultimate salvation. doesnt sound like calvinism to me.🙂

You do know that Peter was quite the Calvinist too. Do I have to post his Calvinism, or can you please do it. Actually, Peter preached double predestination according to his Epistles. 😉

ok, like in 2nd peter 2 vs 20 thru 22?
For if, flying from the pollutions of the world, through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they be again entangled in them and overcome; their latter state is become unto them worse than the former.21 for it had been better for them not to have known the way of justice, than after they have known it, to turn back from the holy commandment which was delivered to them.22 for, that of the true proverb has happened to them: the dog is returned to his own vomit:and, the sow THAT WAS WASHED, to her wallowing in the mire. ive yet to have you respond with scripture to prove calvinism. just a quick question. are you reading scripture in light of the teachings of calvin. or calvin in the light of scripture? may be awhile before i can respond to your next post. gotta go to work. you have a blessed day my friend:)

1 Peter 1

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who are elect exiles of the dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood:

May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

Born Again to a Living Hope

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, **he has caused us to be born again **to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

1 Peter 2

A Living Stone and a Holy People

2:1 So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture:

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
a cornerstone chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,

“The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone,” [1]

and

“A stone of stumbling,
and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

But you are a chosen race
, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.

Actually, James rejected the free will of man; therefore, he is more of a Calvinist than you think. 🙂

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin. - James 4

Code:
have personally found that the Catholics that I have had the privilege to discuss Christianity with in general... handle Scripture very weak and anemic.
Well, that is certainly an inspiring and encouraging invitation to dialogue. 😉
Code:
Scripture interprets Scripture,
Really? where do you find this hermeutical principle in Scripture?
or we need to consider all of Scripture before we come to a conclusion on a particular doctrine. You can’t debate something and just say the Catholic Chruch believes this or that; therefore it is true.
I agree with both of these points, however, there is another point that is equally important. That is the Word of God committed to the Church by the Apostles. You see, it is difficult to have these discussions because Catholics have received something that our Sola Scriptura brethren deny exists. 🤷
Here is your chance to sharpen your iron with a sola scritpura Christian Brother. However, we need to discuss a doctrine within all that is written in the Scriptures about a particular topic. We cannot be cafeteria Christians, ignoring parts of what is written to fit a preconceived idea, and expect to find the truth. We also cannot debate **biblical doctrine **by stating our personal views and opinions apart from Scripture proof.
Here is another reason that such discussions are difficult. You see our modern evangelical brethren have developed their docrines by extrapolating them from the NT. Catholics received the doctrines of teh faith from the Apostles, prior t a word of the NT ever being written. Therefore, this modern innovation of “biblical doctrine” (in separation from the Apostolic Succession) is a fabrication of the Reformation.

The other problem is that Scripture was never intended to be a “proof text”. Christianity is not a “religion of the book”. On the contrary, it is founded upon the Person of Christ, not upon Writings, however Holy. It is a fallacious premise that all valid doctrine requres “scripture proof”. Especially since that doctrine existed before the Scripture.
Code:
If you believe something, support it with Scripture in its proper context within clear biblical doctrine.
In addition to the fallacy of “biblical doctrine” mentioned here as required, we also have a difference of understanding about the “proper context” of Scripture. You see, Catholics understand that the context of the NT is the Catholic Church. It was completely created, protected, canonized and promulgated within that context. There is nothing in it that is not Catholic and it cannot be properly understood outside of the context of the Catholic Church.
Code:
I agree with this article from Catholic Answers in the sense of the lack of biblical knowledge of most Catholics that you meet. Do you want to sharpen your skills in the Scirptures? Of course, we need to debate the more essential issues like the gospel. But we can also discuss issues of Calvinisim if you'd like... if you stay within the Scriptures.
There are two more problems mentioned here. One is that there is such a thing as agreement on “essential issues”. The other is that it is a requirement to “stay within the Scriptures”. This is an artificial and from a Catholic point of view, inappropriate restriction. The Apostles taught that their teaching should never be separated from the Scriptures, nor the Scriptures from the teachings. It is this inappropriate separation that has caused the plethora of division we see in Christendom today.

Actually, James rejected the free will of man; therefore, he is more of a Calvinist than you think. 🙂

This verse hardly proves that James rejected free will.
If you fail to do what is right it is sin - this implies one knows what is right but choses of their free will not to do it.

2 Peter 1:10 Wherefore, brethren, labour the more, that by good works you may make sure your calling and election. For doing these things, you shall not sin at any time.

If you appeal to extra-biblical revelation to a Protestant, it means nothing to that Christian. It goes in one ear and out the other.
I disagree. There are many Protestants that don’t know the history of their own scriptures. They don’t realize that the canon itself is extrabiblical. History bears undeniable witness to this extrabiblical truth. Then there is the undeniable fact that the Word of God was alive and well in the Church prior to a word of the NT being written. This Word of God, which Jesus promised to protect and preserve, did not just suddenly vanish because some of it was written down.

And, if you are right that they are not willing to accept the reality that there are infallible Truths outside the Bible, the conversation will probably not be very fruitful.
Code:
Therefore, we usually don't take your positon seriously apart from a bibilcal challenge. However, the biblical challenge needs to be presented in the proper context of major biblical doctrines.
It seems that your ground rules are that you require us to operate from the same errors upon which your doctrines are based. 🤷

Doctrine is not meant to be extrapolated by the individual from the pages of the Book, however Holy. It is to be received from those to whom it was committed.
Code:
You cannot pull verses out of context and be taken seriously by grounded Protestants.
I can see your point, but since Catholic doctrine is not derived this way, this is not a problem for us. When we read Scripture, we see in it the Teachings of the Apostles reflected.
But many Catholics to this day have not learned the Catholic and biblical doctrine.
I certainly hope that all Catholics will be spared the pain of going astray into what our Reformed brethren call “biblical doctrine”. A Catholic who takes up the practice of extrapolating doctrine from the pages in separation from the teachings of the Apostles preserved in the Church will soon fall away from their faith. I can bear personal witness to this fact.
Code:
They think we are saved by good intentions or being nice or sincere or trying a little harder or doing a sufficient number of good deeds. Over the past twenty-five years I have asked hundreds of Catholic college students the question: If you should die tonight and God asks you why he should let you into heaven, what would you answer? The vast majority of them simply do not know the right answer to this, the most important of all questions, the very essence of Christianity. They usually do not even mention Jesus!
I will certainly concede that most Catholics are poorly catechized and not familiar with their scriptures. However, that is not a good reason to fall into more errors! It should be corrected, but not by adopting practices that will eventually cause problems of their own.

More Calvinisn from Peter… 😉

Make Your Calling and Election Sure

3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to [3] his own glory and excellence, [4] 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. 5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, [5] and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 8 For if these qualities [6] are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. 10 Therefore, brothers, [7] be all the more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. 11 For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

12 Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. 13 I think it right, as long as I am in this body, [8] to stir you up by way of reminder, 14 since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. 15 And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.

The Apostle John tells us that we were not saved by our own free will. 🙂

John 1

1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, [1] and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, [2] and his own people [3] did not receive him.** But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.**

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) 16 And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, [4] who is at the Father’s side, [5] he has made him known.

We all know that Catholics cannot debate Protestants with Scripture alone and win the debate. But did you read the link to the OP? Catholics need to read their Bibles.🙂

“If a Catholic truly does know Scripture, he also needs to demonstrate that in conversation: “Walk the walk,” don’t just “talk the talk.” The more we show that Bible and Catholicism are not contradictory terms, the more we appeal to Protestants with the truth of our overall message. A Catholic who is properly prepared can easily go head-to-head with a Protestant exegete…”

So, the door is open to practice your Catholic apologetics and compare the Catholic Faith with Sacred Scripture. 🍿:coffeeread::juggle:

Please correct me if I am wrong, You feel that a non-catholic,raised as a non-catholic,not given catholic instruction in doctrine not would be able to interpret scripture as well as a catholic who is(was).
I know this was not directed to me, but I would like to note that non-Catholics are quite able to interpret scripture in isolation from the Apostolic Succession. In fact, the plethora and creativity of these private interpretations seem to exponentiate every generation. I have witnessed a vast array of fanciful and creative interpretations that completely overshadow anything done by Catholics. 😉

That’s a distortion my brother. Historic Protestants share common interpertations with the Catholic Faith in most of the major doctrines of the orthodox Christian Faith. We even share the same early church creeds too. The major division really is about our understanding of justification. It sure seems that the Catholic Faith has moved toward a classical Protesant theology of justification by faith. Do you reject penal substutuion, or a forensic justification?

Alive in Christ

Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. - Paul

However, I believe the Catholic Church agrees with Protestants that Sacred Scripture is superior than any other Catholic sacred tradition.
FALSE.

The Catholic Church holds to the Apostolic teaching that the Word of God was committed to the Church both by word of mouth, and in writing. We value both forms of the Word of God equally.
I believe you also posted that revelation is closed with the cannon of Scripture, correct?
FALSE.

The canon of scripture was closed in 382 AD. the Church believes that the public revelation by God of Himself reached it’s fullness in Christ, and was closed at the death of the last Apostle.

You don’t want to take the Catholic challenge as stated by the Catholic article in debating with Protestants in the Scriptures, correct? 😉 The door is open to debate our differences in regards to justification by faith within a forensic justification, or penal substitution. Or, we can debate Calvinism through the Scriptures too. The strength of confessional Protestantism is the Scriptures. The strength of the Catholic Faith is Sacred Tradition, but not Sacred Scripture alone.

Make Your Calling and Election Sure

St Peter says make every effort - we have the free will not to make every effort

**The Apostle John tells us that we were not saved by our own free will. **

Obviously it is God who save us, but if we don’t walk in his ways we can’t expect to get into heaven.

Please educate me on the Catholic Faith. If the last apostle died with the apostles recorded in Scripture, how can there be apostolic succession?
I don’t understand this question, but I think it is off topic in this thread anyway. Apostolic succession is the passing on of the gifts and authority God gave to the Apostles to those who succeeded them, beginning with Matthias replacing Judas. Apostolic succession was well underway before any Scripture was written. Paul ordained Timothy and Titus as bishops before he wrote letters to them.
If I go to the Catholic Catechism, isn’t Sacred Scripture known as the Holy Bible considered to be the greatest form of revelation given to us?
No. Jesus Christ is the pinnacle of God’s revelation to mankind. Scripture reflects this revelation, as does the Church.
