Yes I agree it is very difficult to judge motives on an internet forum. That is why I said I wouldn’t speak on your intentions. I only told you how it comes across.

God bless
I hope I can come across better with gentleness and respect. I like your location of “in Christ”. I personally believe that our vital union with Christ is the key to the Christian life. You seem to say something very similar since your location is “in Christ”.

I have not read the entire thread, but wanted to share my views on the OP. The majority of Catholics do not know their Bible. I recently taught an 8th grade catechism class and they could not find John 6:56! Many were looking in the Old Testment! I have recently begun Scott Hahn’s Bible study book, you can get it here. Its a very, very good overview of the scriptures to get a person started on the Bible. I hope this helps someone somehow!

Pax Christi!

Thanks for sharing your perspective. Scott Hahn used to believe just like me - A Reformed Calvinist from the PCA Church. 🙂

Adam God Bless you in your posts. I agree with you 100%. I know many Catholics including my dear husband who never read his Bible until we got married. Now he is always searching for scripture. You are a real blessing to me and my dear brother in Christ. Keep up the good work and Bless you in your journey with our Lord.👍

Thanks for sharing that you are from the Church of Christ. I guess you are neither Catholic nor Protestant, reject justificaton by faith alone, believe that water baptism is needed for conversion, and proclaim a restoration theology. I know that some Church of Christ churches require that the name of Church of Christ is needed to be a true church. I know some Church of Christ churches consider other Church of Christ churches to be apostate if they play instruments during worship. Please let me know if my understanding is correct.
No, the “Church of Christ” which you described is the one I denied: followers of Alexander Campbell. We believe what Ephesians 2:8-10 plainly states: “For by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not of works, lest any man should boast. We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus, unto good works; which God has before ordained that we should walk in them.” Baptism is a good work-- it does not save. This got us in real trouble from other “Christians”, when we refused to baptize our infants. Many “christians” think that somehow we are saved by our church membership and good works.

Our music is probably quite unorthodox: bongos, snares, keyboards, electric guitars and voices singing “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me…”
We have no paid clergy, liturgy, catechism, nor creeds. Our only authority is the Word of God.

One could join and get baptized in every church listed in the yellow pages of New York City and still come up short of heaven.

By reading those books through the work of the Spirit in our lives. How do you know that the Book of Mormon is not from God? When you read the Book of Mormon, is it because the Spirit is in you, or because the Catholic Church tells you the Book of Mormon is not from God?
Catholics and Protestants speak of the work of the Spirit - yet they have 2 different canons. What’s going on there? They can’t both be right. So who’s got the right canon? Who gets to decide?

Just because a book sounds right doesn’t make it Scripture. Many claiming the Spirit have had differing ideas on the canon. Some in the early Church rejected Revelation, some Hebrews etc etc

I know the book of Moromon is not from God as the Church does not recognise it. And she is guided and guarded by the Spirit.

Some say baptism in not essential. Some say it is. Some say no water? Some say full emersion. Some say partial. Some say sprinking. All would claim the Spirit. Surley the Spirit is not leading people in differing directions.

Perhaps He resposes in the Catholic Church and leads her into all truth and guards her from error and the gates of hell prevailing.

Authorative teaching by the Apostles (oral and written) were received by the Elect by the work of the Spirit. The first century Christians knew truth way before the Church declared an official cannon of Scripture. I think you forget that the Bible is God-breathed. Christians in the 21st century believe that the Bible is the Word of God by the work of the Spirit of God, and not because of some church council.
No, we are in agreement that the Scriptures are God-Breathed. So is the Church!

The problem with your formulation is that either the HS has changed, or the nature of “believers” have changed. I say this because modern Christians, claiming to be inspired by the same HS, all understand Scripture differently. Some Christians deny that books accepted by Jesus and the apostles are actually Scripture. What the Apostles and the Early Church received as Scripture, they call “apocrypha”.
Why do you personally believe that the Bible is the Word of God, because of the work of the Spirit or because the Catholic Church told you so?
Both things are true! Catholics believe the HS does not tell modern Christians something different than He told the first Christians.
There are plenty of Catholics and Protestants who do actually believe that the Bible is the Word of God. The flesh cannot receive the truth of Scripture.
This last statement contradicts the first. If we are all in agreement that the flesh can confuse people, then we are in agreement that there are many persons who believe they are Christians who do not recognize the work of the HS, including which books of the Bible are inspired.
1 Thessalonians 2:13

And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.
This is a reference to the Preached Gospel (Sacred Tradition). Catholics have followed the Apostolic commandment to preserve this. 👍
By reading those books through the work of the Spirit in our lives. How do you know that the Book of Mormon is not from God? When you read the Book of Mormon, is it because the Spirit is in you, or because the Catholic Church tells you the Book of Mormon is not from God?
Both things are true. The Spirit bears witness to our hearts, and the Church has received and preserved the revelation of the HS.

You see, what you are suggesting is that the discernment of what is scripture should belong to each individual Christian. If a person reads it, and the Spirit in Him testifies, then it is Scripture. In fact, this is the same method the Mormons use to get people to accept their book. When a person reads it, they are to have a “burning in the bosom” and thereby they will know it is Scripture.

It is the same problem we see in Christendom over the meaning of the Scriptures. Everyone reads them,a nd understands what is written in the light of what they believe the HS has revealed.
I have to respectfully disagree with you agreeably. When you study John 17, our unity is based on truth and not error. Check out John 17:17.
No, we are in agreement on this point.
Code:
Truth is determined by written revelation
No, 2nd. Jesus is the Truth. He revealed Himself to His Apostles. The Truth existed prior to the NT, and the Truth He revealed to the Church should not be separated from the writings that were produced by it. The Church has always read the Scriptures from the point of view of Jesus revelation of Truth (Sacred Tradition). Truth is found in the written revelation, but it will not contradict the part of the revelation that is not written.
Code:
from above which is illuminated by the Spirit of God to those who have the Spirit of God in them.
When do you think the HS abandoned the Church? Was that before the councils? Since you reject the decisions of the councils, may be it is because you don’t believe they were guided by the HS? Do you think the Council of Jerusalem described in Acts happened without the HS?
Code:
I think you really miss the point that all born from above Christians know in part, and believe something that is false.
Indeed, we do miss this point. We are to embrace all that God has revealed to the Church. Granted, He has only given part of the revelation, but we are not permitted to reject parts of what He has given. The deposit of faith is an inseparable whole.
Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. **For we know in part **and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. - 1 Cor 13
The “perfect” is the second coming of Christ. Until that time, we are obligated to hold fast to the traditions, just as they have been delivered to us.

I think your bold is considered shouting, which makes me want to avoid you. That’s the main reason most Protestant avoid you. It how you say things. Communication is only as effectual as someone wanting to listen to you. Actually, I’m surprised that you don’t get disciplined or banned from the moderators.
Bold isn’t considered shouting - CAPS is.
I type in bold so that nobody can claim they didn’t see my reply to them as they run.

LOTS of hit-and-run posters on this forum . . .

Do you find me to be rude and intentionally offensive? If so, I do apologize because it is unintentional. It’s very difficult to share my views and keep harmony and unity of our shared Christian Faith. Have you tried to discuss things on a Protestant Forum site. If you have, maybe you can understand where I am coming from.
All this coming from a guy who misrepresents the words of Benedict VXI in regards to Luther and runs when I call him on it. You have yet to address this.
Frankly - I can’t understand why you haven’t been kicked off this forum.

How can you call yourself "charitable"?
Why do you persist in this offensive display of misleading, out of context quotes?

Hmmmm???

I think the Catholic Catechism would disagree with you. Sacred Scripture is from God alone. God is the author of Sacred Scripture, and God the Holy Spirit interperts the Scripture for the adopted children of God, and applies it to their lives to transfom them into the image of Christ.
No, 2nd. The Catechism is the explanation of the Word of God for the present day. It cannot contradict anything that God has previously revealed. Scripture is clear that men, inspired by God, spoke. This is the HS working through people. The people that wrote the NT were Catholic men.
Code:
The Spirit of God is not contained within the walls of the Catholic Church.
No one has claimed that He is. What we have claimed is that He does not reveals something to modern denominations that is opposite of what He has previously revealed to the Church.
II. **INSPIRATION AND TRUTH OF SACRED SCRIPTURE **

105 God is the author of Sacred Scripture. "The divinely revealed realities, which are contained and presented in the text of Sacred Scripture, have been written down under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit."69
There you go, 2nd. Who did the “writing down”? Hint, their names are on the books, and they were Catholics. 😃

God did not use them like “automatic writing” as if they were puppets. They wrote what they believed. They wrote what had been taught to them.
Do you not receive me as your brother in Christ in whom Christ died for?
Yes. We are trying to do for you what Prisca and Aquila did for Apollos.

It is not loving to confirm people in error.
I am here to rejoice with my fellow brothers and sisters in what God has done for us in the person and work of Jesus Christ our elder brother. By the grace of God alone, may God cause our time together to grow us in our love and affection for our Triune God, and grow our love for our brothers and sisters in Christ.
2nd, Love rejoices in the Truth, not error. Departure from what the Apostles believed and taught is an error. It is not an opportunity for affection, but for pain.
Again - you’re not listening
Scripture is FROM God and given to us THROUGH the Church.
This is why I said, “The Bible was brought to you, courtesy of the Catholic Church . . .”
There is no anger in this post, 2nd. Frustration maybe, exasperation, because YOU ARE NOT LISTENING. No anger tho. It is not charitable, Christlike, or loving to confirm people in error. The Bible is brought to you through the Catholic Church. It was written, collected, preserved, canonized and promulgated by Catholics. Even the Reformers accept this. If you cannot, I don’t know how we can get any further in your goal of reading Scripture together. You really have no basis for believing what you have in front of you is Scripture. Basically all you have given us is your own testimony to the burning in your own bosom - the same criteria Mormons use to claim their book is Scripture.
The Catholic Catechism seperates Sacred Scripture from Sacred Tradition. I think you have blended Sacred Scriipture with Sacred Tradition, but they are actually different.

No, on the contrary, the Church teaches that they are never to be separated. They come from one common Source.

They are distinct, but interwoven, like two strands of a single cord.

II. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TRADITION AND SACRED SCRIPTURE

One common source. . .

80 "Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture, then, are bound closely together, and communicate one with the other. For both of them, flowing out from the same divine well-spring, come together in some fashion to form one thing, and move towards the same goal."40 Each of them makes present and fruitful in the Church the mystery of Christ, who promised to remain with his own “always, to the close of the age”.41

. . . two distinct modes of transmission

81 "Sacred Scripture is the speech of God as it is put down in writing under the breath of the Holy Spirit."42

"And [Holy] Tradition transmits in its entirety the Word of God which has been entrusted to the apostles by Christ the Lord and the Holy Spirit. It transmits it to the successors of the apostles so that, enlightened by the Spirit of truth, they may faithfully preserve, expound and spread it abroad by their preaching."43

82 As a result the Church, to whom the transmission and interpretation of Revelation is entrusted, "does not derive her certainty about all revealed truths from the holy Scriptures alone. Both Scripture and Tradition must be accepted and honored with equal sentiments of devotion and reverence."44
I am glad you are reading the Catechism, 2nd. 👍

I really think the cause of the Protestant Reformation had to do with the gospel itself centering around justification by faith.
This would be a very narrow, uneducated, and myopic view of the Reformation. It really had nothing to do with doctrine at all. It had to do with corruption of persons claiming to represent the doctrine. The doctrine of the church has never changed. However, the wolves that were claiming to represent the Church, giving a corrupted image of that doctrine, combined with a plethora of political, economic, and other forces to form division and separation.
Code:
It seems by my two Catholic sources below, we are in agreement, eventhough I hold to a forensic justification.
The Catholic doctrine has never changed.

Catholic doctrine does not deny a forensic justification. This view is deficient by itself, though.
Isn’t that amazing! If more Catholics knew the official Catholic teaching of justification by faith, there would be greater unity between Catholics and Protestants. I think Protestants over-react with Catholic friends and neighbors, because most Catholics don’t know we are justified by faith!
This is a true statement.

It also proves that your previous statement is wrong. The Reformation was not over the doctrine of justification by faith.
I believe all churches are subject to error.
I guess you believe this because you also believe that Jesus is too weak or disintersted to keep His promise to the Church to lead them into all Truth.
Salvation come through the person and work of Jesus Christ and not a particular branch of Christianity.
The Person and work of Christ are in the world through the Church, which is the fulness of Him who is her Head. That is why there is no salvation outside the Church.
Code:
If you become a new creation in the Catholic Church... praise God alone.
I guess what you are saying is that we should not be grateful to the church for revealing the Truth of Christ for us. Or maybe you are saying we should be grateful to God, in spite of the Church?
The problem is really that we all know in part…individual and churches. The Bible can appear to contradict itself… if you are honest… yet we know that it is impossible for God to contradict Himself. These apparent contradtictions are really our apparent finite limitations trying to imperfectly understand an all wise and infinte God.
I agree that the apparent contradictions are our finite limitations to understand. I also agree that God does not contradict. There is no contradiction inside the written word, and no contradiciton between the Word of God in the Church (sacred tradition) and the written word.
Code:
We all try to reconcile the apparent contradictions imperfectly, however, our hermenutics are compeletey different. The best way to understand Scripture is through Scirpture... or all of Scripture.
I think this is the best way you know, because you are separated from the Apostolic Tradition. I agree that it is better than nothing.
Code:
The best way Catholics understand Scripture is through what the Catholic Church tells them what Scripture mean. Do you agree with this post?
I think your statement is misleading. You have stated that you do not believe the Catholic Church contains the Teaching of the Apostles, so when you say “catholic church tells them” you are really referring to what you believe are man made opinions. Given that, no, I cannot agree with your statement.

Catholics read scripture the way the Church was taugth to read it, in the light of what Jesus taught, through the Apostles. The Church has always read scripture this way. This is, as the Apostle stated, not the opinons of man, but the Word of God.

I am trying to have a starting point in which we can agree. We are justifed by faith, but we do see things quite differently in our understanding of the doctrine of justification. I believe in penal substitution, and a forensic justification through the imputation of the righteousness of Christ through faith. I believe that we are justified by the righteousness of Christ alone, being an alien righteousness apart from us. How do you see the doctrine of justification as a Catholic Christian?
I think you need to start a new thread on this, 2nd, or go to one that has already been started. I suggest Apologetics. It is a frequent topic here at CAF. Don’t be scared. 😉

It all depends on your definition of justification by faith alone. You are quite emotional, because you should embrace Pope Benedict’s version of justification by faith alone as being a good Catholic.
Try to stay on the topic thread, 2nd or it is going to get shut down. I also think it is a bad idea for you to come to a Catholic Forum and tell Catholics what they “should” do with regard to their faith practice. You may need to review the forum rules.
But what makes your interpretation of the Bible from which you get your belief about who will be saved anymore valid than that of the Catholic Church’s?
Did you miss that post? He has the burning in the bosom! 😉
Please explain the Catholic version of who will be saved.
This is another really good thread starter that you could put in Apologetics. It is off topic in this thread. 🤷

Suffice to say that the Bible is not required, any more than it was for those who got saved before the bible was formed.
That’s simply a lie sister.
No. A lie is a deliberate attempt to deceive someone. On the contrary, bookgirl has made an observation about how you come across, with your condescending tone, and your instructions on how Catholics “should” believe. You may say you know in part, but your actions speak louder than your words.
Well, it all depends on what doctrine we are discussing. Remember, we share many of the historic creeds and essential doctrines of the Christian Faith. I have no doubt that the Scriptures is the Word of God, and that Jesus is God incarnate, and the the doctrine of the Trinity is true.
On what basis do you believe or accept any of these things? They all come from the Catholic church!

You have no basis for accepting them, while rejecting the authority of the Catholic Church.

Let’s go slow, do we agree on our understanding of 2 Peter 1 as brother and sister in Christ.?
I’m not, at this particular moment anyway, interested in scriptural study of 2 Peter 1 specifically. I’m interested in the fact that you agree with the concept I’ve put forth that two different people can come to two completely different interpretations of that scripture passage and why you think that is.

I’m also still interested in what particular website from which you obtained your quote of Luther.

Catholics get far more exposure to the Bible than Protestants do. The Catholic Mass is filled with scripture from beginning to end. The average Protestant service barely has any scripture at all.

Our only authority is the Word of God.
Which is to say that you are your own authority. What is authoritative for you is how you understand what scripture says. This is a good example of why Jesus gave authority to persons, rather than books.
Code:
I believe the Catholic Faith blends the Protestant view of justification and sanctifiction as one process of justification.
No, 2nd. The Catholic faith was whole and entire before any “protestant view” existed. There is no protestantism “blended” into Catholicism. The only “blending” here is in your head.

The Catholic view comes from the Apostles, who taught that justification, sanctivicaiton, and glorification are all aspects of one salvation.
I think your bold is considered shouting,
No. just emphatic.
which makes me want to avoid you.
People here get emphatic with you because you don’t seem to be listening.
Internet communications and Forum site discussions are very limited tools. There is much shortcomings in this form of communications; therefore, it’s hard to judge a person’s motive.
Yes. All we can do is go on what you have posted.
Thanks for sharing your perspective. Scott Hahn used to believe just like me - A Reformed Calvinist from the PCA Church. 🙂
Just goes to show there is hope! 👍
Do you find me to be rude and intentionally offensive?
Sometimes.
Code:
If so, I do apologize because it is unintentional.
I honestly believe that most of the time, you have no clue how disrespectful and condescending you come across.
Code:
It's very difficult to share my views and keep harmony and unity of our shared Christian Faith.
That is because the harnony and unity you imagine does not exist. To the extent you have been separated from the Apostolic Teachings, your views are not in harmony and unity.

Code:
Communication is only as effectual as someone wanting to listen to you.
Not entirely here 2nd. Many read and appreciate posts that you cannot, because we are open, and willing to hear what is said. There are also about 10 times more people reading the thread than there are posting. Many will read these emphatic posts and learn from them.
Actually, I’m surprised that you don’t get disciplined or banned from the moderators.
If you have a complaint, 2nd, use the little triangle at the upper right of the post. Tell the moderator what has offended you. If the other member is in violation of the forum rules they will be warned or disciplined.

Why do you think that we understand Peter’s exhortation to us in a different way?
It’s the glasses. 😉
Code:
We share so much in common. I don't have to discuss the dual nature of Christ, His incarnation, His sinlessness, His perfect life and sacrifical death.
All these elements are products of the Catholic faith. If we dont’ need to discuss them, it is because you have accepted the Apostolic Teaching through the Catholic Church. 👍
By ‘discuss’ do you mean you want to tell us what we believe?

God bless
I honestly don’t think he knows he comes across this way.
Sure, since this is the non-Catholic religion section on Catholic Answers. 🙂 If you want to learn about Protestantism, I guess this is a good place to be.
No, 2nd. this would be a misunderstanding. All of the areas are part of CAF. While I agree that this is a good section to learn about Protestantism, in no case is it approproate for you to tell us what we believe. For one thing, you have made it clear you do not undersatand our faith, secondly, you telling us what we believe is not any more conducive to good communication as are the bolded typefaces to you.
As long as we understand that our views of predestination should never divide us. As you probably know, Reformed Christians value the views of Augustine.
There you go again with one of your “shoulds”. By what authority do you come here to instruct us in what we should do?

The fact is that Calvin’s departures from the Apostolic faith have already divided us. Pretending that these departures do not divide us will not contribute to unity, because it avoids the Truth, and we all agree that unity is based in the Truth.

Reformed Christians only value the parts of Augustine that seem to reinforce their innovative theology. Augustine was Catholic, so they avoid all the Catholic passages.
Well, I believe we are all born spirituality dead and in enmity with God according to Scrirpture, and that God makes us spirituality alive. Therefore, I believe our new birth is completely dependent on the grace and mercy of God.
This reflects the errant notion of total depravity according to Calvin. Also off topic in this thread. Apologetics would be an appropriate venue.
Code:
I agree that Protestants understand the doctrine of justification by faith differently. But, should that divide us?
Yes. Truth should always be distinguished from error. This is the duty of the Church.
It is by the authority of God, that I share this with you.
No, 2nd. You are not the authority of God. All valid authority comes from God, and is passed on by those whom God has appointed. It is not separated from the authority that He has ordained, as you are. Authorized persons are also sent forth. You sent yourself.
Code:
It is His Holy Word, not mine. My assurance in Christ is as good as the promises of God, for it is impossible for God to lie.
His word, yes, but it is filtered through your own perceptions. Your perceptions have been colored by your experineces and education (or lack of it).
Code:
10 Therefore, brothers, [7] be all the more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. 11 For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
I am glad you chose this scripture, because it is a good example of how one’s perceptions (filters) change the way they understand what they read.

You see, when Catholics read this, we do so through the lens of what the Apostles believed and taught. In so doing, we notice the word “if” in the sentence above. This is what is known as a conditional article. It means that the result is predicated upon the premise. It means that if you don’t practice those things, you could fall. If you don’t follow this “way”, the richly provided entrance into eterniity may not be available.
Well, the OP link about “Catholics need to read their Bibles” is from a Catholic which was posted on Catholic Answers.
Yes, so let’s try to stay on topic, ok?
You have no idea of my understanding of 2 Peter 1. I think you just want to argue for arguing sake. Please explain to me how we understand 2 Peter 1 differently.
I think I have done this. It has to do with the glasses. You wear Calvinistic glasses, we wear Apostolic.
The Christian Faith does not rise or fall with Luther or Calvin. Please get the source like all of us… the Internet.
No, but your permission to post here does rise and fall with following the forum rules. You are required to cite your sources here.
Actually, that’s a very good biblical view.
By which I think you mean that it conforms to what your view of the bible is. 😉
Code:
I think where Catholics get confused is about how does a saved person look like in the Christian life.
This line is a good example of you putting forth your opinion as authoritative. You say you know in part, yet you make comments like this that indicate when Catholics see things differently, they are “confused”. Do you see the condescending attitude we are talking about?

No, the “Church of Christ” which you described is the one I denied: followers of Alexander Campbell. We believe what Ephesians 2:8-10 plainly states: “For by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not of works, lest any man should boast.
