Luke 24:45

Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,
I have participated on Protestant boards, and done so respectfully. You have been what many have already told you to be borderline disrespectful. I don’t think it’s completely intentional, but there have been times throughout the discussion where it would have been nice if you would have “checked ya self before you wrecked ya self” If a Protestant wants to debate with me, the only thing I request is that they stay on one topic and be as intellectually honest as they can be. That includes citing sources and understanding quotes in their entirity, not just chopping them up or piecing together words to suit an agenda. Now on to your post.

Which Scriptures is this verse speaking about?

I have to agree which is why I find it impossible to take him seriously. I think he must be aware of the lie he is trying to spread or his knowledge of Christian history is at an amazingly low level.
He has correctly observed that, as more Catholics read their bibles, more Protestants need to be deep in history. When he does this, he will learn the fallacy of his claim that the Catholic Church is “coming around” to agree with Luther. 😉

This is what I basically believe:

Yet, I know that there are other Christians who do not believe like me who are still my brothers and sisters in Christ.

That’s a tough one. If Protestants start studying Church History, and Catholics start studying Scripture in greater depth… we will meet in the middle and apex of Christianity which is Christ and Him crucified for sinners like me and you!

Completely didn’t answer my question. Were you in that movie with Vince Vaughn? I bet you were the guy who wore the rec specs and got mad when he saw his mail order bride hitting on another dude. Did it hurt to take a dodge ball to the face that many times? 😉

Please tell me which scripture Jesus opened their minds up to. If you can’t, I’ll be more than happy to hook you up with that information.

Catholics neeed to read their Bibles!

The Bible-reading habits of Catholics lag far behind those of Evangelical Protestants. For their part, Evangelicals are usually ignorant of Church history, at least those nearly fifteen centuries before Martin Luther came along. It’s a sad fact of human nature that people tend to pit things against each other that don’t need to be opposed logically (or biblically). It should be both/and, not either/or. Catholics ought to do more Bible reading, and Evangelicals ought to read more Church history. We can learn from each other…

Protestants often find it difficult to reconcile Catholics’ lack of Bible reading with our claims to possess the fullness of Christian truth. Any viewpoint that is self-confident and healthy needs to engage criticism openly and honestly, no matter what the forum is. Protestants do that all the time. They write whole books about problems in their ranks. It is a sign of health and vigor…

For non-Catholics to respect us, they have to see us criticizing ourselves and not closing ranks and pretending that we are above all the errors with which everyone else struggles. This truth is obvious, and outsiders see it already, so we have to deal with it frankly. I’m not advocating a neglect of anything else in the Catholic spiritual or liturgical life. I’m maintaining only that too many Catholics neglect or try to minimize or de-emphasize the Bible…

If a Catholic truly does know Scripture, he also needs to demonstrate that in conversation: “Walk the walk,” don’t just “talk the talk.” The more we show that Bible and Catholicism are not contradictory terms, the more we appeal to Protestants with the truth of our overall message. A Catholic who is properly prepared can easily go head-to-head with a Protestant exegete…

Dave Armstrong, webmaster of Biblical Evidence for Catholicism (www.biblicalcatholic.com), is the author of A Biblical Defense of Catholicism (Sophia Institute Press, 2003). He writes from Detroit, Michigan, where he lives with his wife, Judy, and their four children.

I have personally found that the Catholics that I have had the privilege to discuss Christianity with in general… handle Scripture very weak and anemic. Scripture interprets Scripture, or we need to consider all of Scripture before we come to a conclusion on a particular doctrine. You can’t debate something and just say the Catholic Chruch believes this or that; therefore it is true.

Here is your chance to sharpen your iron with a sola scritpura Christian Brother. However, we need to discuss a doctrine within all that is written in the Scriptures about a particular topic. We cannot be cafeteria Christians, ignoring parts of what is written to fit a preconceived idea, and expect to find the truth. We also cannot debate biblical doctrine by stating our personal views and opinions apart from Scripture proof. If you believe something, support it with Scripture in its proper context within clear biblical doctrine. I agree with this article from Catholic Answers in the sense of the lack of biblical knowledge of most Catholics that you meet. Do you want to sharpen your skills in the Scirptures? Of course, we need to debate the more essential issues like the gospel. But we can also discuss issues of Calvinisim if you’d like… if you stay within the Scriptures.
Nearly the first 300 years there were not an agreed canon for new testement, for the first 400 yezars there wasn’t a book where all scripture was compiled together in one language in one book, for the first 1500 or so years scripture was only availbable in Greek or Latin. With all these years where the commoner didn’t have the Bible availble to him you woul think people would be without any guide the way Proetstants talk. Now since the Bible has been availble to the masses we have 100s of denominations. Sounds like the wrong problem is being worried about to me.

You again are painting with too broad a brush. You really want your position to be that the Catholics, on this site at least, don’t know their Bible? Or is your position that they need to study the Bible more from your Calvinist point of view?

Also, you really think that there are no Protestants who don’t study Church history? Are there any Protestants reading this that want to make a comment on 2nd Adam’s position? Edwin? JonNC? GKC? Anyone? Because you know Protestants don’t study Church history just like Catholics don’t study their Bible :nope:

Here is a thought; why don’t you start a thread titled: Protestants need to read Church history and see how that thread goes.

Generalizations are always enlightening. Especially about the person doing the generalizing. 😉

God bless you 2nd Adam

I’ve already hit up my Pastor on church history for several reasons. Within my own local body, there is an unorthodox view of the Trinity that crept in. Creeds and confessions are so helpful to refute old herseies that enter our churches. Therefore, I have challenged him to consider all of redepmtive history in teaching the flock. Redemptive history goes way beyond the Catholic Church, being revealed in Genesis 3. Personally, I do not see enough continuity between the Old Testament and New Testament in Catholic Theology. Of course that’s my personal opinion. In addition, I encouraged my Pastor to preach on Reformation Day on Sunday, which he plans on doing. I think you wll find that the Reformed Churches are more solid in church history than modern Evangelicals. However, Church History and Sacred Scriptures need to bring us back to Jesus Christ and Him crucified as being the center of our Christian Faith. 🙂 Please remember that the OP link was written by a Catholic, and his work is linked to Catholic Answers. So, it is actually Catholic Answers indirectly telling you to read your Bible more. :juggle:

I don’t care if it was written by a Catholic, a Hindu, an Atheist or a Mormon. We all (Catholic, Protestant) need to read our Bibles more. You really want to take the position that you no longer need to read your Bible? Or am I correct in saying that even you need to read your Bible?

For the Protestant, our greatest means of Grace is the Scriptures. Therefore, we try to mediate on His Word day and night!

Here are my quesitons:
I feel like this is fairly significant to the discussion and would like 2nd to expand upon it. Do you believe there were more than the 27 books of the NT around at this time? Doesn’t it stand to reason that sooner or later a group of people would have to get together to try to figure out which of these documents should be kept and taught out of and which ones should be tossed? You say it is by the grace of God that Christians know that the Bible is the Word of God, but believing the way you do, wouldn’t that information also have to be in the Bible?
And here is your supposed answer:
It is only by God the Holy Spirit that we receive special revelation from above in an effectual way.

1 Thessalonians 2:13

And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.

Luke 24:45

Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,
I then asked you to tell us to which Scripture Jesus opened their (the apostles) minds. Are you saying that Jesus opened their minds to Scripture that hasn’t been written yet? Are you also saying that you are a part of that “their?”

Does it bake your noodle to know that there are this many Catholics who know their Bible?

Old Testament Scriptures.

Not greatest, my friend. Only. What else do you have? Anything else you say would be considered tradition, and therefore not Biblical. You see how confusing it gets?

And yet you are shocked that Catholics are told to read their Bibles more? 🤷

Again, every Christian, Catholic or Protestant can stand to read their Bibles more. I am lost as to why that is so earth shattering to you.

Your best Catholic apolgetists are ex-Protestant pastors!
