Given the large degree to which many churches, especially mainline Protestant ones, are indistinguishable from a secular social club, is it any wonder?
Martin Luther King Jr. warned that if churches came to be perceived as having lost their authentic spiritual mission, then the churches would be dismissed as irrelevant.
Reminds me of an old joke:
A Catholic church, a synogogue, and an Unitarian church all on the same street caught fire at the same time. The priest showed up, and he rushed into the burning building and rescued the consecrated Host from the Tabernacle. The rabbi showed up and he rushed into the burning building, and rescued the scroll of the Torah. The Unitarian minister showed up, and she rushed into the burning building, and rescued the photocopier and the coffee maker.
