Catholics: When did you last read the Bible?

I study the bible daily on my own, and on Sunday after mass with my adult son (who also posts on these forums).

I have a NAB, a Douay-Rheims, a KJV (my old LDS missionary edition), a NKJV, an Archaeological Study Bible and a New Living Translation - Catholic Reference Edition, which I really enjoy for the OT.

I am a revert. My son is a convert.

It’s a bit of a red herring: we don’t profess belief in the Bible, do we?

But I understand that Protestants love to lord it over us (Biblical phrase alert).

I read Greek and Latin so I have a Greek NT and the Biblia Vulgata (including the latter in just a NT edition).

I own a Hebrew Bible in Hebrew: one day I hope to learn the language.

I have the RSE Catholic Version (OUP), which is what I turn to day in and day out.

I have KJV.

I have various one-volume books where the commentaries seem helpful.

And the end of all my learning is this: to find nothing beats a good priest and his homily for interpretation and clarification.

Last year, I did a through the Bible in a year reading plan; and this year, I’m reading the daily Mass readings.

I have numerous Bibles: NIV, NRSV, NAB, KJV, NKJV, ESV, The Message (:eek:), NEB, Century version. I think that’s all. I don’t have a Douay Rheims, however. Probably should look into that.

As long as you don’t buy a “New Weird Translation” of the JWs.

Similarly, I own 4 English translations, listed in order of personal preference:

Revised Standard Version - Catholic Edition
The American Bible, 1st edition
King James Version
New Living translation

I own a New Revised Standard Version, but I wouldn’t line a bird cage with it. No wonder bible stores sell them for $5.00 :rolleyes:

I simply don’t have time for focused reading and study on a daily basis. So, I take 3 - 4 days a week for it. Plus, being here I get little snipets of a refresher every day. Plus, if my dreams come true and I get authorization to start working from home, I can begin taking in daily Mass, as I won’t have to deal with 2.5 hours of commuting every day.
 
In addition to reading the bible, does that also include commentaries and concordances to the bible?

I use an on-line concordance, but it is Protestant. Am still looking for a good Catholic concordance on-line. Anyone???

Is it realy necessary to have a Catholic one? I have a Strong’s Concordance and if you can’t find something with that, well, I don’t know.

hmmm… Now that i think about it, i think i did try to find something once and had a hard time… and then (again - now that I think about it…) the Strong’s doesn’t acknowledge the 7 books that were taken out of the Bible…

As Emily Latella (Sat Night Live) used to say…" Never mind…" :rolleyes:

Yeah, but in most cases, I’ve seen that Strong’s will also work with your Douay-Rheims Bible.

Still looking, though it appears that I may have to wait. But, in “discussions” with Protestants, I find it most helpful to use a Protestant NT, usually a NIV.

I read it this morning before work.

I have a 20 minute Daily Catholic Bible and I LOVE it!! It makes it very easy to find time to read.

I learned to read and study the Bible from Protestants, I am sorry to say. As a result, I still have mostly Protestant versions. I have 15 of these, of which the RSV is my favorite. I have recently ordered a Catholic version of this, but it has not been delivered yet.

I am looking forward to the Navarre Bible coming out on CD, at which time I will eagerly purchase it. Currently I am using Biblesoft, which is the best electronic collection I have found. Besides that I read the St. Paul Daily Missal the most.

I am a cradle Catholic

I read the Bible at least 15 minutes per day.

My daily reading Bible typically changes, while I use the RSV-CE for study, both personal and in class.

Hmm, read through the whole thread and no mention of the Cotton Patch Version. Strange. :confused:
