Yes, agree Father made it very clear. When those who are stronger, kill those who are weak and defenseless it is evil. And by voting for a candidate that is for abortion while forgetting a child’s right to life, we are an accomplice in destroying life. Abortion is a painful topic, it is necessary to always remind women that God can forgive and bring healing to those who have taken their child’s life by the term abortion. But it is necessary to protect the innocent and that is following the ten commandments. Thou shall not kill

I love Fr Mark. I went on a retreat he led last year. He is a holy man, holy priest.

But the way he’s talking, I probably can’t vote for anyone ever again because of things like war, the death penalty, abortion, euthanasia… killing & murder take many forms and happen at many stages of life. 😞

I will cut Fr Mark some slack on this, though, because maybe he didn’t get enough sleep last night or something.

Archbishop Sample discussion on how to form one’s conscience was excellent.

Ignoring truth or good advice from someone in another country is not the best route to take. We are all North Americans .

…or if we abort the people who could’ve helped find a solution to allow humanity to thrive and prosper, while dealing with a changing climate, whether it’s a natural cycle or man made.😉

The ones who are responsible for those deaths are the mothers who sought the abortions and the doctors who performed them. The government leaders he spoke of did not order any abortions.
As with prostitution, depending on the case there is a lot of shared responsibility.

The functions of government go well beyond preventing murders, even though one could argue that a government who fails to do that has already failed a primary function of government. I think we need some new political parties, but considering the way consciences are being formed in this country I don’t know if that would help as much as is needed. It doesn’t help to have a perfect candidate if the votes to elect him or her aren’t there.

I love Archbishop Sample (and I’m from the Czech Republic :czech_republic:). When I imagine a proper Catholic, I imagine him.

As I understand it virtually all politicians in the US support laws that allow for abortions in some circumstances. This includes abortions that the Catholic Church considers to be the killing of innocent human beings e.g. in the case of rape, fatal abnormality, inevitably death of the foetus, risk to the life of the mother etc.

I guess the means Catholics can’t vote for any candidate.

Or maybe they can start writing letters to express their beliefs about the sacredness of life, liberty and the pursuit oh happiness. If enough people called, wrote and lobbied things would change.

I think money rules the world, including politics. It wouldn’t be about “enough people” it would be “unbelievably, ridiculously, disgustingly rich people” who get to change things, or not.

The good news is that we can choose not to vote, or, we can vote for people in spite of their stands. The Bishops say it all so much better than I can, read the link above.

Then the talk is, as I said before, for Americans. And my comment stands, that American politicians do not order abortions. (I don’t think Canadian politicians do either.)

While it is true that those who kill the weak and defenseless are engaging in an utterly evil act, it is not true that those who vote for a candidate that is against criminalizing that behavior are accomplices in the evil act so permitted.

Isn’t it the Church’s position that if you vote for a candidate BECAUSE they favor abortion, it is a mortal sin on the part of the voter, but if you vote for a candidate DESPITE their favoring abortion, it is not a mortal sin?

Correct. For example: in the US, in both parties, members of Congress support some positions that go against the mainstream of both party & country. Why? Because of money

Yes, of course. The only trouble with the USCCB guide is that its 41 pages are so carefully nuamced as to be nearly useless in practice. One can find reasons to vote for whatever preference one has.

“Stupid Catholics”.

Meh. I feel that he could’ve made the point that a Catholic cannot be stupid, and that if you are stupid (such as, for example, to promote abortion), you are not Catholic.
