Catholics- Would you kill Joseph Smith?

It is always fascinating to me how I can bear my testimony of Christ, and it receives no acknowledgement from those who wish to contend rather than discuss.

The passages you quoted are indeed there and regulate something I do not have experience with, so I can’t comment directly without some research - research you would probably discount in any case. There is an underlying message of obedience to God’s law in these verses, regardless of how you feel about them at present.

It is also a very curious position to oppose the concept of polygamy in the Christian and Jewish world. From what I know, the twelve tribes of Israel were not born from the same wife, both living at the same time, to the same man… yet they play such a significant role in our rich Christian legacy… perhaps the law of plural wives is in fact approved by God, even if you or I do or don’t believe in it.

How about you start with the milk before the meat… just a loving recommendation from the cow (me 😊 )…

P.S. Book of Mormon was last year, I am teaching the D&C this year… Good stuff - more than 700 principles of truth.👍 still learning after 32 years at it.

No. I grew up in Bear Lake County and Cache Valley, which is about 50 north of Utah Valley.

Which is close enough–and your evasion is noted.

In a way, you are quite correct…and taking it the way you are using it, then no Mormon would ever participate in anything like the MMM, and no Christian would participate in something like the Massacre at Haun’s Mill, and no Catholic would do what was done to the Albegenses…Except, of course—they did.

While you are right; you really can’t blame the RELIGION for the actions of the people who break its rules, I have noticed that people are far quicker to point this out when the rules referred to are those belonging to their own belief system.

When the folks breaking the rules belong to a different belief system, especially one that folks are critical of, that very important truth seems to get lost.

I would ask that you perhaps look at your “testimony of Christ” again. Perhaps your testimony was more about Joseph Smith? I know that in just about every single Fast and Testimony meeting I’ve ever been to the words “I know this church is true, I know Joseph Smith was a prophet of God” were used.

Can you perhaps see how one would gather that the testimony was more about Joseph Smith and the church he formed rather than Jesus?

There was no “evasion”. I heard a lot about how horrible Catholics are and VERY little about MMM back in my seminary days. (yes, 4 years of early morning and I served in the class presidency for each year… graduated and everything.)

The only time I ever remember learning about MMM was when a non-Mormon, who was looking into it asked me about it and I hadn’t heard about it at ALL and so took him to my seminary teacher to ask.

How old are you BTW?

Not really, it isn’t. Of course, you might want to define the boundaries of 'Happy Valley." Logan is about 75 miles from Salt Lake City proper, give or take a couple of miles. Logan is about dead center of Cache Valley, and Utah Valley is a little bigger than Salt Lake City. I split the difference. Bear Lake County is about 30 miles north of Logan, depending on whether you go through Logan Canyon or Immigration Canyon–both gorgeous drives.

Thank you, by the way, for telling us that you’ve not met any Mormons who blamed the Fanchers for their own murders…the way some folks here are blaming Joseph Smith for his.
 
I’m just curious how you’ve come to the conclusion that the consensus of this thread it what you said, Diana. It seemed to me from what I read, that ‘almost’ all have responded by saying no way would they murder, or condone the murder of Joseph Smith.

this is true, as I mentioned in item #1…that nobody would condone it now.

However, it has almost always been followed by some condemnation, not of the members of the mob, but of Joseph Smith. It’s a little hard not to come to the conclusion I did.

Sorry I just don’t see it. Not from the majority of Catholic posters here. And, knowing the number of Catholics that I do know personally, none of them would condone it. For then, or now. Understand, if a person views someone as a false prophet, they are not going to have a lot of positive thoughts or things to say about the person. That does not mean they think his murder was justified. Not at all. I think thats what we’ve read here. For the most part, certainly.

Let’s see… did I actually tell you that or not? Nope. Didn’t say that. I don’t like being misquoted. Please refrain from doing so again, please.

Well as far as Geography goes… Since Orem/Provo is about 34 miles south of Salt Lake City proper and from what you’re telling me that Logan is 75 miles from Salt Lake and Bear Lake County is another 30 miles… hmmmm.

I’m counting about 139 miles between the two. Of course I’m no Math genius. 😊
