Awantz,
I am glad that you are here seeking the Truth and history of the Catholic Church. I really think that the Catholics on this forum really ARE here to help/teach/impart knowledge. Some are REALLY knowledgable and give much scholarship. I am amazed how I am learning how it all fits together. There is more to know than you can learn in a lifetime, but you are off to a great start. In response to some of the “not so nice” posts, they swing both ways. As you read through the different threads (which I suggest you do) you will see much patience on the behalf of the Catholics. As you have seen on this thread, answers have been given, Scripture has been shown, history has been proven, and despite that, non-C’s continue to refute our information/beliefs with circular discussion, unreasonable beliefs, closed minded answers, and just some really rediculous statements. It gets very difficult for Catholics to try to “prove” our beliefs, why, etc… in the face of such accusations, untruths and downright disrespect of our faith. The Catholic Church is the ONLY Church that was around at the time of the Apostles. It is in writings as soon as 107AD, and by the use of it then, had obviously been in use for quite some time. We most definitely can trace our roots back to Peter and the apostles. History proves it. Any denial of that is based on each person’s denomination’s teachings and the fact that those who hold that belief, obviously hasn’t researched it. The facts are the facts, and they are there! Protestant Churches, (Luther especially did this) have had to spin untruths. There are so many out there now, the Luther wouldn’t even recognize Protestantism anymore. What happened to all of the beliefs that all three major reformers founded Protestantism on? There were many have been lost or done away with over the last 500 years. Times/people may change, but Jesus’ Deposit of Faith hasn’t and will never change. Protestantism then was much more close to Catholocism than any non-C Church will teach you now. Anyway, the historical proof of the Catholic Church being Christ’s Church is there. The problem is if non-C individuals to research it or not. The Church has preserved it for all to see. Non-C Churches don’t teach any of that. Once you start digging, you will be amazed at what you find is “wrong” with what non-C Churches teach, the errors in doctrine, etc… Since the Catholic Church has always been the original Church-the Early Church-the Church founded by Christ and given the Deposit of Faith and Sacred Tradition by Christ, it really is up to any other denomination to prove it’s beliefs against ours. The Catholic Church is the Church that carried Jesus’ Teachings and Tradition forward and protected it from heresy, (throuth the divine protection of the Holy Spirit) so all Christians for ever generation could know the Truth. We still teach that same Truth today. Nothing has changed. The Protestant Churches were founded in the 1500’s, more Churches were founded in the 1800’s. These Churches were founded by man not Christ.

You can really learn a lot from this forum. There are SO MANY great, fantastic, did I say great:) threads where you can learn so much from. The following threads are REALLY full of information and I think you will be inspired. These are only a few really great threads. I hope you enjoy them.

I don’t think any Catholic here has claimed that Luther was all wrong.

However, as a Catholic Monk, he chose to rebel, he choose to break his vows (as did his wife/nun), he chose to introduce new ideas that conformed to his personal desires… he chose to leave and rebel from outside the Church instead of remaining and working from the inside.

The Catholic Church has more “problems” to deal with from inside the Church than from without.

That is a reason why we have no fear from Protestants, Muslims, JWs, etc. They are outside the Church and have made themselves weak. They can claim guidance from the Holy Spirit all they want.

And in many cases the Holy Spirit is working in them… but it is not to keep them outside the Church… it is to lead them to the Truth, the fullness of which is only found in The Catholic Church.

.
Those claims of the Holy Spirit are very real and I have seen them with my own eyes. They may be outside of the RCC but the real question is; are they outside of God? Not from what I have personally witnessed. Martin Luther himself claimed that he would die a thousand martyr deaths for his faith in Christ. Tell me that his faith was that of a rebel and an outsider.

His personal interpeations of scripture led 10s of millions away fomr the one True Church and imperiled the immortal souls of all who followed him.

Thank God he was able to lead so many away from the schemes of man back to the faith of Christ.

And you have so many different versions of the truth to choose from and none of them suit you you get to make up your own.

and you are so certain of that aren’t you?
Don’t you find it strange, SIA, that the fruits of Luther’s actions include so much division, so much new “theology”,and so much struggle in discussions like this?

A bad pope at that time, a bad treatment of indulgences, slow communications, and much more added to the problem. But it was a Catholic Church problem(s) that needed to be resolved by the Catholic Church.

Luther was a part of that Church. He chose to leave. That was bad enough.

But he fostered and festered that “divorce” to the peril of so many others.

Now he is often looked at as some sort of hero:shrug: . For what, rejecting the very Church that his Lord founded? He is a big footnote in Salvation History… but a footnote just the same.

.

Wow, you folks are being alarmingly stereotypical. Friggin get along. Both Catholic and Protestant serve the one true God who sent his only Son into the world to die on a cross so that we might know the father and live. You are both brothers and sisters in Christ! Bickering over which side is more right will solve nothing. Actively seeking division amoung brothers is a goal of the evil one - our common enemy who opposses Christ Jesus. These differences must be reconciled and forgiven if you want to see any real progress in this matter. Do you really think that God in his infinite wisdom and love would limit himself to the worship practices of just one group of people? Nothing in this world exists without some manner of purpose - Prodestant and Catholic alike. The world is not so black and white, God cannot be put in a box.

Do you really think God would have different versions of what is necessary for salvation? Do you really think God is the author of confusion?

I like that analogy about putting God in a box. Some folks think outside the box (like me), but God is still there for us. After all, he made us this way. If everyone was the same Baskin Robbins would only sell vanilla. We are all different, with different likes, prefernces, needs. God knows that and comes to us in the way that works for us on an individual level. It’s not about mass consumption, bringing it down to the lowest common demoniator. God is not so narrow, so limited. No one has God in a box.

Couldn’t God be the author of diversity? I mean, He did create humans in diverse types. Did He do that to present confusion?

It appears that for our seperated bretheren god is put into an infinite number of boxes-especially when one takes it upon themselve to create their own personal god in their own image and likeness

Please lets not play the diversity card. There simply can not be multiple versions of what is necessary for slavation.

I would at a minimum agree that God is infinite. Don’t you think so?

Couldn’t God be the author of diversity? I mean, He did create humans in diverse types. Did He do that to present confusion?
Humans are diverse - God isn’t. God is ONE. One God, one eternal truth, one eternal and definitive revelation and mode of revelation of Himself. One Christ, one body of Christ, one Church.

When we differ fundamentally (as we do) in our understanding of God and His revelation and the mode of that revelation, of the nature of Christ and the nature of his body, then we can’t possibly all be right.

So you limit God? God can’t be diverse? God can’t change His mind? God can’t treat different people differently?

So you limit God? God can’t be diverse? God can’t change His mind? God can’t treat different people differently?
God changes His mind? You mean He at times doesn’t think correctly and needs to adjust His thinking? Perfect understanding, perfect thought, is that which needs no change or alteration, because no eventuality is unknown to it, or a surprise to it. To suggest that God changes His mind is to say that God is flawed and that God isn’t omniscient.

He treats different people differently? If you mean He excuses any of them from making their utmost effort to come to a true (as in the one truth) understanding of Him then no.

He has revealed Himself perfectly, in the person and teachings of Jesus Christ, which teachings have been faithfully passed down by His apostles and His Church (the Catholic Church).

He WANTS us to know the whole truth, remember - ‘you shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free’. We can’t be set free by half-truths or incomplete truths. So if we don’t find the truth it’s not because HE hides it from any of us. So no, He doesn’t treat anyone differently in the sense of excusing anyone from making every effort to seek the truth which, when they find it, will lead them to the Catholic church.
