CCHD Appeal This Weekend

I received this e-mail from a small pro-life group here in Maryland, and I am wondering if any of you have heard about this. Is this true?

This coming weekend, November 20/21, at all Masses, Catholics are being asked to donate to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development {CCHD}. This organization has been problematic in the past and continues to be a PROBLEM!

Please prayerfully consider NOT DONATING as CCHD has released a document that has highly praised and endorsed an organization known as the COALITION of IMOKALEE WORKERS{CIW}. CIW was a participant in this past summer’s Marxist PRO-ABORTION, PRO-HOMOSEXUAL Conference called the US Social Forum 2010----- in spite of the promises made in this very same recently released document that CCHD would not give to groups supporting acts and ideologies not in concert with Catholic teaching.

Additionally, the Reform CCHD Now coalition has discovered that CIW is also partnered with at least 3 pro-abortion, pro-homosexual coalitions and networks. Catholics need to support only organizations that promote The Good and actively boycott every single one that promotes Evil.
 
I am afraid that the USCCB has been woefully remiss in their duties to vet those groups and organizations which they support and to which they donate through the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. This has lead to all sorts of abuses, such as the promotion of abortion and same-sex “marriage”. Steps have been taken, but there is still work remaining.

The good news is that Archbishop Timothy Dolan was just elected president of the USSSB. He will no doubt ruffle some feathers in the group, which has been known for left-wing associations since the 1960s, when my father first made me aware of it - and he was not even Catholic. Just consider: “Human development”. What does this actually mean? In the 1960s, a few short years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed, its focus was much clearer than it is now. Now, it seems to be associated more with everything that the Church has always taught against.

Until trust can be restored, and assurances are made that our donations will not directly or indirectly support causes that are intrinisically evil, I will withhold my money. There are many other groups that provide actual relief services, saving lives, rather than just “developing” (whatever that means) those who are foruntate enoughto not have been aborted. Thank you for confirming what the e-mail stated. If I had not received this e-mail, I would have never known about this situation. There is too much uncertainty here in this campaign for my money. Thank you again.

First, there is no attribution in this “response”. Who compliled it?

On point 1, the CCHD response is blowing smoke. They claim that “the development of a substantially revised CCHD Grant Agreement” which will apply to “all pending and future” grants, will address the concerns levelled at their organization. Well, until it actually is developed and implemented at some undetermined and unannounced future date, it cannot be applied. This is meaningless. What have they been doing to formulate a “substantially revised CCHD Grant Agreement” over the past two years, since their actions were exposed?

On point 2, the CCHD response twice uses the phrase “recently violated” regarding certain actions of the grantee “Rebecca Project”. Hogwash! Do they expect us to believe that the “Rebecca Project” would suddenly violate grant rules after CCHD came under scrutiny? This is simply not credible.

This CCHD controversy has been brewing for many years, and came under intense scrutiny after the 2008 election. Look at the date of the “response”: Last week? This is a pathetic demonstration of their new “accountability”.

On point 3, the CCHD propagandist (a person who disseminates information designed to create a particular point of view) has dragged out every canard and red herring extant. They went to the subject of the complaint for a defense? Oh, that’s just rich! “Now, Mr Bundy, you didn’t actually kill all of those women, did you? No, I didn’t think so either…” (in best John Stossel voice) “Give me a break!”

On principle: Why is the nebulous concept of “human development” a higher priority than keeping devastated Haitians from dying of cholera?

Archbishop Timothy Dolan was asked what his chief priorities would be as President of the USCCB and he gave the following quote:
“I think what I can safely say is that probably my major priority would be to continue, with all the vigor that I can muster, what’s already been put in place. It’s not like — thanks be to God — we’re in crisis. Things are going well.”

By his own words, he wants to continue with what’s already been put in place. I wouldn’t hold your breath for him to reform the CCHD.

SHUT DOWN THE CCHD!

The Archbishop of Cincinnati (Schnurr) made it very clear at the end of his letter that the policy is to take the general collection from the parishes and donate to CCHD!

Ok… I am all for charity, but this is down right wrong! I have notified my parish priest and have spread the word to many others about this hypocrisy!

Our bishop asked us to give. With all due respect to him as my/our father in Christ, I believe I will not do so, until the bishops as a whole can get complete transparency from CCHD.

Why not apply the same standard as we do in voting? Vote pro-life by giving where the least, or zero, damage will be done.

The CCHD was instituted in 1969, when there was greater spiritual well-being and worse physical well-being. A lot has changed since then. The entire concept strikes me as something that needs retiring. What we need is a CCSD (Catholic Campaign for Spiritual Development).
