In fact, I’ve decided I have a celebrity crush on Duke University student-turned porn star, Belle Knox.
Srsly? She’s not even that good looking.

😛

I have to admit to two crushes. JLaw I mentioned earlier. 😊

My other crush is Audrey Hepburn. :o

I had a crush on some celebrities back in middle school. I did read somewhere recently that a psychologist did research on why young teens seem to always develop celebrity crushes no matter what culture they are from. The current theory being supported is that feelings of attraction are very new for young teens and honestly kind of scary, so a crush on an unattainable actor or singer is a “safe” way to figure out these “weird” feelings. In other words, the opposite sex is cute but kind of terrifying and awkward, so young teens seem to pick someone they can like without actually having to interact with them.

That’s a very interesting theory. It seems very plausible to me.

Ha ha!

I’ve written six figure skating novels, three of which are published. (Look for Jazzicals on Amazon).

One of the main characters in the novels is Officer Chuck Zander, who helps the skating team solve various mysteries. (These novels are written for older children and teenagers, although skating parents love reading them, too.)

MANY of my fans tell me that they have a crush on Officer Zander! My own adult daughters have a crush on him! Heck, I have a crush on him! I created him to be “crushable” on purpose because I want people to keep reading my novels and ask for more!

And that does bring up the question of whether we really crush on our favorite actors, or whether we are actually crushing on the fictional character(s) that they play. I will admit that I loved John Doggett on X Files–I never did like the show until Mulder was abducted by aliens and Doggett (played by Robert Patrick) was assigned to replace him.

And back in my youth, I definitely loved Barnabas Collins, the vampire.

I mentioned in other posts that all of us who crush on celebrities actually crush on the “image” that the celebrity has. This is true of musicians, certainly. Even though they aren’t actors, they are still “playing a part” on the concert stage, and the question is, how close is that “part” to who they are in real life?

As I told Gordon Sims, though, I have done a lot of reading about my favorite celebs, and they are decent people in real life. (Jonathan Frid R.I.P.) I don’t tend to be interested in “bad boys.”
I’ve encountered more than a few women on line who wish Mr. Darcy wasn’t a fictional character.

The “fictional character” angle does seem to fit with all of this. Celebrities are most often much more about image than about who they really are. I recall my high school English teacher talking about how she hated Sean Connery when he was best known for being James Bond. She couldn’t understand the attraction to him at all. But as soon as she saw him in the role of the intellectual father of Indiana Jones in the Last Crusade, she was fairly smitten by him. It was much more about the character than the man himself.

Of course, with that there is the danger of chasing after an ideal that is impossible to live up to. It’s easy for a fictional character to be charming and perfect and always seem to say and do the right thing. It’s much more difficult in real life!

I think most people are playing when they have a crush. For example:

https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/...H34ubhFPXOFvIu3Ok4-r-RkehUoWhemG2arOxchQKSK11

I see this in the Geek section of Pinterest frequently (less frequently since there aren’t any new films with Loki or Tom Hiddleston playing). But it’s so obvious to me that the people who pin this are having a bit of fun on a few levels.

He’s one that fans call “life ruiner” ( a term of endearment) because he’s “perfect” and has ruined it for any other man. To the point that at some con Tom’s name plaque reads:

Tom Hiddleson
Actor
Life Ruiner

I think all of these things point to the fact that the crushers and even the crushees being self-aware and having some silly fun with it.

What makes Tom perfect? He can be a complete loon. This is what did it for me (just a couple minutes of your time.) 🙂

P.S. If you insist on referring to (or mocking, disparaging, exaggerating, etc.) my crush on Tom Hiddleston, please do so in the past tense, as I have “moved on.” Thank you. 😉

There’s a whole lot of women in that audience! 😛 😃 I had no idea he was so popular with the ladies. I only know him as the creepy looking Loki. 🙂

Ah, when us ladies saw this face:

and we swooped in to warm and protect his broken, frost giant heart. :knight2:

Too funny, Bruised Reed. You have opened my eyes! 😃 It shows how out of touch I am with these things, I guess. 😛 I would have assumed the women would swoon over Thor, not Loki. :o

I haven’t seen the movies, but I’ve seen the pictures. I’m a Thor-type.

The ladies in my house are Thor-watchers. 🤷

:rotfl: You’re too funny. When I see that picture, all I can think of is “Run, children, run, before Loki gets you!” 😛
It’s fun. Tom Hiddleston is such an easy target because he’s got the bad boy thing going on because of Loki but IRL he’s known to be incredibly thoughtful and generous and can be silly and impish, too. Oh, and he has a voice that reminds one of rich chocolate and he reads sonnets from Shakespeare…ah, such a lovely trip down memory lane.

I’d never seen a picture of her and didn’t know her name until I Googled her for that post. I just find it curious that so much of what people say they do about their celebrity crushes are things that would be condemned in a different context, or if the celebrity someone is crushing on isn’t the type of celebrity or caliber of person they find acceptable. Yet the crushes they have on these people they perceive as decent and/or wholesome (who they also, by some strange coincidence, find to be attractive) are just fine.

It just strikes me that the message coming across is that low levels of allegedly pretend lust are perfectly fine when the object of that lust meets an individual’s specific moral criteria (even if those touted morals are just the product of a press release), but bad when the object of lust is unwholesome, a real person or someone an individual knows personally. Oh, and my personal stance that feelings like this are only appropriate when directed at your spouse is completely wrong.

Several of us have said this several times in this thread: it’s not lust.

It’s nowhere near lust. It’s more like a little child loving a puppy. There’s no sexual stuff at all in most crushes.

I would say that if there is sexual stuff, it’s gone beyond a crush, and probably has become lust or perhaps “longing” or “desire,” which leads to lust according the Bible.

As for the final sentence in your post above, I’ve said earlier in this thread that feelings like this should NOT be directed at your spouse, because they ARE “puppy love,” and a spouse deserves true, deep, “married” love, not a silly, funny little crushy gushy “love” that really isn’t love at all, but just “playing,” as another poster described it.

Gordon Sims, I think you should just let it go and not be bothered by “celebrity crushes.” You apparently don’t have the type of personality that is likely to have a “crush” on anyone. That’s OK. When it come to “playing,” not everyone likes to play the same way. I always loved building forts and pretending to be secret agents, but not all of my friends enjoyed playing that with me–they preferred hiking around the backyard and pretending to be explorers. That’s OK. We were still friends.

The one caution I would have for you is to tread lightly around your children. Perhaps they are just like you and will never be interested in teen idols like One Direction. But many young teenagers do experience a very strong crush on an actor or musicians. I hope that you will not condemn your children when it happens to them, or accuse them of “lusting after someone.” You don’t get it–that’s fine. But don’t condemn your children if they do “get it.”

I specifically haven’t mentioned childhood/teenage crushes simply because I don’t see how adolescent behavior excuses the behavior of adults. I had plenty of crushes when I was younger, real and celebrity style, but after I got married my wife and I had a talk about it one time and I saw how inappropriate it was to put some woman other than my wife on a pedestal. Like I said, though, I think you and some of the other people defending crushes in this thread can see at a basic level how these behaviors are wrong, at least in some circumstances. You just don’t want to see them as wrong when it pertains to your own circumstances. Just looking at one extreme, I know a woman who has a huge crush on one of the guys from Game of Thrones (Sean Bean?). She’s married, has three kids (7-14), and works from home. Her home office is adorned with pictures and posters of him and a friend of hers made her a body pillow cover with a nearly life-size picture of him printed on it (she sleeps with it every night). She often “jokes” with her daughters that if their dad dies or leaves her, then he’ll be their next daddy. She describes her crush on him in much the same way you describe your crushes. Would you agree that she’s setting a good example for her daughters?
