All well and good. Thanks for judging me. If you think it will get you closer to God, fine. I don’t think it would help me in anyway. I have enough sins on my plate and not currently ready to experiment. That’s your way, fine. It’s different strokes for different folks you got 7up pepsi n even coke. Just asking, am I on ur celibrity list? (Just joking. Really I am. God bless you).
Well, you’re welcome.

I’m going to expound on another aspect of my crushes. In my reply to on_the_hill I mentioned feeling old but that isn’t going to be my point. Crushes are a momentary diversion from real life. My job is stressful and I have to deal with people who are often hostile and many have a history of violence. Do you blame me for wanting to escape that? Also, it’s good to know that the part of my brain that can be attracted to a guy still works. I’m single, never married (this is sort of where being “old” comes in) and there are no prospects where I live. Crushes let me know I’m still a healthy woman and that my mind has enough free space for something fun or something new. When my depression is bad there is no free space for that. When I was taking care of my dying mother there was no free space for that.

Even if I were married I hope that my marriage would be healthy and happy enough for a crush. One of my friends and I talk about our crushes and she said that she and her husband both have crushes on celebrities. I think one of the funniest things I’ve seen is a video at a comic-con with Tom Hiddleston where he comes out on stage in character and wearing his Loki costume. At one point you can hear some guy shout out, “My wife loves you!” I didn’t detect bitterness or jealousy; instead I heard man who understands and loves his wife and is willing to join her in some innocent fun.

Nice making it look clean. If I go for morning mass, say my rosary, offer my work up to God. Earn more money to support the church, I don’t thing celebrity crush would appeal to me. I’d be too engrossed in the work of the Lord my God than spend time discussing some fantassy of some imoral atheist whose been divorced x times with kids out of wedluck etc. Celebrity crush won’t aid your spiritual life and might even distroy your wedding. On one post a lady said her husband knows she would leave him for some celebrity. I want to own my wife and God own us as one. I’d faint if she kisses me but has a picture of Bekham under her pillow. My friends wife told me once that she enjoys sex with her husband cos she assumes its me. I was quick to tell her it would never happen, she should thank God for what she has and face her marriage. Still on celibrity crush it leads to lust, its not holy and definitly won’t get u to God
I suggest that you stop judging people without knowing them.

Many celebrities are not “immoral atheist whose been divorced x times with kids out of wedlock etc.”

I have been happily married for 35 years, so obviously, having celebrity crushes does not “destroy your wedding.”

You aren’t from the U.S. It would be wise of you to learn more about us before you judge us so harshly or condemn parts of our culture that you obviously have no understanding of.

Do you understand what a “celebrity” is?

You ask, “am I on ur celebrity list?”

Are you really a celebrity?

Just in case you are a serious poster (I’m beginning to have my doubts about this), a celebrity is someone who is famous. In the U.S., we have many actors, musicians, and dancers who are celebrities, along with many professional and amateur athletes. But politicians, business people, philanthropists, writers, pastors, teachers, children, cooks, etc. are celebrities in this country.

Donald Trump, a businessman who has made a lot of money in many investments, is a celebrity here in the U.S.

Jared, the man who lost 100 pounds eating Subway Sandwiches, is a celebrity.

The Toaster Strudel boy on the television commercial is a celebrity.

Meryl Davis, the ice dancer, is a celebrity. She and her ice dancing partner spent 17 years in relative obscurity, practicing their skating in the state of Michigan, and winning the Olympic Gold Medal has made both Meryl and her partner Charlie “A List” celebrities.

That’s another aspect of being a celebrity in the U.S. There are various levels of celebrities, and “A List” celebs are the “top celebrities.” But there are plenty of local celebrities. The Director of Sports at a local television station is a celebrity here, as is our mayor, and the head of the teachers’ union, several high school athletes, and several local singers and musical groups. But outside of our city, these people are definitely not celebrities–no has ever heard of them or has any interest in them.

I suspect that you are not a celebrity at all, and that you are misunderstanding what we are talking about when we say “celebrity crushes.” You seem to think that anyone is a celebrity, and that is not at all true. Only famous people are “celebrities.” The rest of us are regular people, and most of us don’t develop crushes on regular people. If we do, it’s not the same kind of crush as a celebrity crush. There are no “conventions” or “festivals” for regular people, and no one starts a fan club for “Cat” or any other regular people. That would be very weird.

Again, I suggest that you seek to understand these aspects of American culture before passing harsh judgment. You will have a hard time making friends if you continue to pass judgment on things that you do not understand.

I hope this post will be helpful to you as you work to understand U.S. culture and traditions.

For your information, I know who a celebrity is. We speak english (real English) where I come from not adulterated English as ou’d find in the US where tenses are jumbled up. I put that comment (do you have a crush on me) cos the place was getting too heated up.

Now being upfront, as Catholics we are meant to imitate Christ. Our aim is to be like God. Will Jesus have a crush on some celebrity? Would he have Alecia Keys as his screen saver? Beyonce in his laptop picture folder? If not, STOP IT.

About your statement “I should know the US. I do know the US.” Revelations calls her the false prophet. In God we trust. Yet you go about legalizing homosexuality, furnication, divorce, masturbation, euthenasia. Don’t be fooled. Revelations 10 talks about the woman with 7 spikes on her head. Book in one hand and pointing other hand to the heavens. That’s statue of liberty. Your new king james version omites 60000 words from the real bible. That’s evil. Even removes Acts 18:37 taking out (and philip said…I blive that Jesus Christ is the Son of God). To remove that from bible is heavy. Romans 1:16 amended to remove the word Christ. Etc. Bigger omition in rev 1:11 completely removed (I am the alpha n omega the first and the last. Speaking of your Obama have you read the scriptures which might be refering to him? Are you aware of ebola? You need to be sincere with youselves. We are close to the end. Focus your attention only on the life of Christ and not bother your lives about some celebrity. He/she has his own cross. Perhaps why you’re not married is because you want ur man to be carbon copy of some worshipped celebrity. I’m sorry I appear harsh but that’s the reality on ground.

Okay… this is kinda silly… those who have a “crush” on celebrities really don’t. Come’on. It’s easy. The odds are so slim there’s really relatively no risk in having a “crush” on a celebrity because they and we all know the odds of it actually happening are so ridiculously low that no one in their right mind would ever expect it to happen and actually have a plan or strategy if it did. So… in that sense… no these are not grave sins… if they are sins at all. What a group of guys (or gals) say sitting around together in a social situation hypothesizing about celebrities is completely different than real life. Are we so obsessed with celebrity, wealth and fame that we can’t tell the difference. Really… this borders on just plain stupid…

This is such a mess.

You are misinterpreting the book of Revelation. I suggest that you find a good Catholic exegesis of this book and study it. Your “interpretations” are incorrect.

I AM MARRIED, and have been for 35 happy years.

And I don’t “worship” any celebrity or any human being. You are not reading what I and others on this thread are saying. A celebrity crush is NOT worship.

Do you have friends in the United States? Are they helping you to learn about this country and our language and lives? I hope you will find American friends and learn more about us and seek to understand us.

I think you might be projecting a bit here. I didn’t feel that this particular thread has been heated at any point. Perhaps you are not used to people disagreeing with you or being able to defend their position.

Actually, Jesus has each of us on his screensaver. In his case, it’s not a crush but true love. So yeah, I think he does have Alicia Keys on his screensaver. Maybe not the picture you had on yours.

Cat already cover the Revelation part but you mixed up who you were addressing regarding being married. And no, I’m not single because I want my man to be a carbon copy of a celebrity. You don’t know me, but if you did you would know how ridiculous that comment is. I mean, know you are trying to fill in my background to make what you are suggesting fit “reality” but you are so far off it’s funny. And that comment was particularly condescending. You don’t appear harsh, no, but do appear to have a habit of painting certain people as silly and small.

Out of curiosity, how much time per day (on average) do you think I spend on a crush? I know you don’t actually know but how do you imagine it? Don’t dodge answering by suggesting any amount of time is too much; that would be a real cop out at this point. You’ve been rather bold in your assertions so far, so why stop now? So…how much time do I spend crushing? :hmmm:

Bruised Reed, I’m going to answer your question if it’s OK. 🙂 I spend about 3-5 minutes a day on my crush on Robert Patrick. I check his twitterfeed (on google–I don’t have a Twitter account) and read his tweets–usually they are quite uplifting and frequently he has pictures of himself with his priest or the priest at a parish that he visited while out of town filming.

And on Monday evenings, I spend one hour watching Scorpion, a very good TV show new this season, and I enjoy seeing Robert Patrick for about ten total minutes of this show.

And I have his picture up in my locker, along with pictures of my family, and of Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins, and my skating novels.

So 3-5 minutes a day plus 4 seconds (when I open my locker), and one hour/week.

I wouldn’t call that obsession or lust. It’s barely a real crush.

That sounds about right, Cat.

And for what it’s worth, Jovinovi and others, the lock screen and home screen on my phone is TARDIS 3-D live wallpaper and on my desktop my log-in picture is the Infant of Prague, the wallpaper in the secure log-in for Torchwood and my screen saver is the time and date. And for the month of All Souls I change my desktop wallpaper to All Souls by Bouguereau and for December to Our Lady of Guadalupe as I have done for years but if you want to paint me as a silly woman with a immoral celebrity crush, do so at my amusement. What? I can’t have layers?

Cat, you’ve convinced me. There’s nothing at all wrong with celebrity crushes. In fact, I’ve decided I have a celebrity crush on Duke University student-turned porn star, Belle Knox. I’ve plastered her picture all over my desktop, follow her on Twitter and spend a few minutes a day looking at pictures of her and watching her videos. Nothing lustful and not a real crush, just an innocent celebrity crush.

You don’t wear sarcasm well.

And Cat doesn’t deserve your contempt.

Do you really like her? Do you like her enough to pray for her? To me, that’s the measure of a good crush.

Just for the record, I have never had a crush on any “trashy” celeb. All of my crushes have been on respectable actors or musicians who are involved in projects that are family-friendly, God-welcoming, and of enduring worth.

When I say “respectable,” I mean either single and not co-habiting (at least to public knowledge), or married to one person of the opposite sex for many years, and raising children who do not get into trouble. My crushes also express pride and love for their country (Jonathan Frid, the actor who portrayed Barnabas Collins, was Canadian and loved his country). Most of them either served in the military (Mr. Frid did), or work with the USO to entertain the military (Robert Patrick has been to Iraq and Afghanistan several times in the last ten years–military personnel really love meeting “The Terminator!”).

Why would I have a crush on someone with sinful traits or who are involved in projects that I as a Christian am utterly opposed to?! Ick. Most of my crushes are on people who resemble my father or my husband, or the son that I never had (Yay, One Direction!) in some aspect.

I have no contempt for Cat but I am trying to make my point. When people say that celebrity crushes are okay but me crushing on a neighbor or coworker is wrong, I don’t find that consistent. When someone says that having a crush on a mainstream, “respectable” celebrity is fine but having a crush on a “trashy” celebrity is wrong, I feel that’s also inconsistent. If making googly-eyes at the pictures of Robert Patrick, or James Caviezel, etc. covering your fridge is fine and admirable, why is it wrong to do the same with Belle Knox, or your coworker, or the neighborhood babysitter?

There are plenty of celebrities and public figures I find admirable and a few I’d consider myself a fan of. However, I think it’s a big leap from wanting to watch someone’s movies or buy their albums, to hanging up pictures of them and swooning at the mention of their name, especially if you’re married. I get the feeling that you, Cat and several others are able to acknowledge that on some level, especially since most would take issue with me crushing on a porn star or someone I see every day. In other words, you know it’s wrong in some situations but you don’t want to see a problem with your own actions.

I will consider responding to your post but it’s difficult because you are making comments and asking questions about things I didn’t say or do. I personally avoid crushing on men that are taken. I can’t actually say if my friends’ husbands are attractive because I can’t do it; I’m just not wired that way. And I’ve gotten into trouble when they thought I was suggesting their husband was not attractive. So if want, try posing different questions and I’ll reply.

I will add that I think you are exaggerating in your mind what Cat, I and others think of as a crush. Like Cat asked, do you actually have a crush? Do you think she’s interesting and has admirable qualities? Can you let it go with out feeling bereft?

Maybe I should troll Pinterest for memes. Perhaps you’re a more visual learner and those would help.

I think Celebrity crushes are good fun. The “list” about 10 celebrities came from an episode of Friends TV show, that was a funny one because Ross met Isabella Rosalinni and he told her she was on his “list.” Needless to say, she wasn’t impressed.

No, actually he didn’t put her on his list because it was too much of a longshot. She was put out because Ross deleted her from the list.

In another post, I stated that celebrity crushes are “safe” because the object of the crush is unattainable. There is certainly a chance that I will someday meet Robert Patrick. (It helps that my daughter is “in the business.” She arranged for my husband (her daddy, of course!) to have dinner with one of the stars of the old Star Trek series.)

But in all likelihood, even if I meet him, it will be a quick “Wow, I’m so thrilled to meet you!” And he will answer, “Thanks so much for all your support.” And that will be it. Not even a hint of a sexual encounter. (His wife will probably be with him anyway, and she’s quite a bit prettier than I am!)

The problem with nursing a crush on a neighbor or co-worker is that they ARE attainable, and many marriages have crashed and burned over adultery.

I see nothing wrong with admiring a pretty or handsome co-worker from afar–WAAAAAY afar!

No pictures, either real pictures from a camera or online pictures. No spending time on Facebook or other social media. No prolonged conversations, and definitely no private meetings, business or otherwise.

It’s just too dangerous. We are weak human beings, and we should never underestimate the power of our sex drive, or our desire to love and be loved. A woman who has just had a fight with her husband and who is lonely and frustrated at home is ripe to be picked by a kind and considerate man who means well. A husband who hasn’t been able to make love to his wife in months and who is lonely and frustrated at home is just as ripe for sexual sin with a kind and considerate woman who is just trying to make him feel better. The sex drive can sweep any of us up so quickly that we can’t stop ourselves until it’s too late.

Also, I do think that the spouse should always be considered when getting involved with a celebrity crush. My husband and I are both “crushing” on celebs, and we have a lot of fun with it. My poor husband! He always gets some kind of Little Mermaid doo-dad from me for his birthday or Christmas, and lots of other people know about his crush and THEY buy him mermaid stuff, too! His office looks “under the sea!” And as I mentioned in another post, my husband bought me the complete Dark Shadows last year–so wonderful!

My husband and I have been married for a long time, and we both know where to draw the lines at “fun” and “not fun.” Not every couple is on the same page as we are, and I think that if a spouse if upset or offended or hurt by their spouse’s celebrity crush, the spouse needs to drop the crush like a hot potato. OTOH, sometimes when something is forbidden, it becomes even more attractive, so it’s my opinion that a wise spouse will ignore the celebrity crush, knowing that it’s highly unlikely that the celebrity and their spouse will run off together.

What about characters, including those is books? Is it wrong to have a crush on a fictional character?

Ha ha!

I’ve written six figure skating novels, three of which are published. (Look for Jazzicals on Amazon).

One of the main characters in the novels is Officer Chuck Zander, who helps the skating team solve various mysteries. (These novels are written for older children and teenagers, although skating parents love reading them, too.)

MANY of my fans tell me that they have a crush on Officer Zander! My own adult daughters have a crush on him! Heck, I have a crush on him! I created him to be “crushable” on purpose because I want people to keep reading my novels and ask for more!

And that does bring up the question of whether we really crush on our favorite actors, or whether we are actually crushing on the fictional character(s) that they play. I will admit that I loved John Doggett on X Files–I never did like the show until Mulder was abducted by aliens and Doggett (played by Robert Patrick) was assigned to replace him.

And back in my youth, I definitely loved Barnabas Collins, the vampire.

I mentioned in other posts that all of us who crush on celebrities actually crush on the “image” that the celebrity has. This is true of musicians, certainly. Even though they aren’t actors, they are still “playing a part” on the concert stage, and the question is, how close is that “part” to who they are in real life?

As I told Gordon Sims, though, I have done a lot of reading about my favorite celebs, and they are decent people in real life. (Jonathan Frid R.I.P.) I don’t tend to be interested in “bad boys.”
