I’m sure this is nothing new, and I’ve tolerated this for some time, it is just now occurring to me how rude cell-phone usage is sometimes.

So I was chatting w/ one of my coworkers yesterday when she gets a call on her phone. Naturally I (and our conversation) am immediately dismissed in order for her to take her phone call. HOW RUDE!!!

This is personal peave of mine that these things are even allowed in the workplace. We used to have somewhat of a policy about keeping phones on vibrate and then only taking calls on breaks, but that is completely out the window. Now, whenever our supervisor is away from her desk, we get to hear her phone ringing, and ringing and ringing. And then the interim missed call ‘beep’ every few minutes.

Why do people treat EVERY phone call as an emergency? Don’t people realize there’s a feature that tells you that you’ve missed a call and logs the number for you to call back?

I had a cell phone when I was a teenager and I was one of those who just always had to be on it. I have since parted ways with this bit of technology and life is much simpler - you would be amazed how rushed these things can make you feel. Getting ahold of someone for even the most trifle thing becomes a life or death issue and people get so flustered!

DH wants to get a texting feature/service on his next phone and I’m thinking, great, you really need one more techie distraction from the real live people in your house (us, his family). I can see our kids one day calling him from their cell phone to his from their backseats in the car just to talk to him!!!

What is up w/ this??? Don’t even get me started about parents letting their kids have cell phones at school where they’re texting w/ their hands and phones in their pockets!!! I am totally w/ Dr.Ray on this - BIG NO-NO!

I see your point, and a cell call should be treated like any other interruption. Some merit to be responded to while others don’t.

OTOH, I find that texting really helps me to get things done and cut down on computer time and phone calls.

Like with every technology, you have to use good manners. Having a blasting ringer and loud conversations in quiet workplaces is rude.

On the other hand, cell phones have made it so much easier to communicate. For kids, you can block any feature you want - and most schools confiscate them if found. They can be VERY useful in an emergency!
I don’t have a problem with cell phones… they just have to be used CORRECTLY!

You can also track the cell phone, and determine where your kids are. You can even turn on alerts so that if they leave school when they should not have, it alerts you to the fact.

I’ve got one for you. Not 20 minutes ago I stepped downstairs to use the washroom, and there was a guy standing there doing his business while he talked away. TMI, I know, but, well, there you go. :^P

I can’t stand the expectations that come with my phone, as well. Everyone thinks they should have 24/7 access to me. Why people expect me to answer their calls at 12.15am on a weeknight anyways is beyond me. :^P

I agree that common manners apply to cell phone use. I think it’s become a way of looking “cool” by talking on the phone and that seems to have overridden manners. As for calls after midnight…heck…after 10pm, they had better be life or death because anytime the phone rings at that hour, I get a huge knot in my stomach 🙂

I still think the rudest thing I’ve ever seen with the phone was in Church (only about a month ago)…first we hear the ringtone, then the panicked ruffling through the purse (which I can understand the occasional accident), but then to my and my GF’s surprise…“Hello?..No, not right now…I’m in church. I’ll call you when I get out.” Bad enough to take place inside of the church, but this was during the Psalms. Thankfully it wasn’t during the Consecration!!

Hah! The thing that kills me is that while we were at my husband’s family’s Thanksgiving, he got a text from a friend of a friend wishing him a happy T-Day. My husband’s reply when he read his text was ‘I wish I could text him back.’ I told him, can’t you just call him? What’s the point of the phone anyway? Texting is so impersonal!

I have to put my affairs in check sometimes when I’m caring for the kids alone in the evenings. There are times I will just plain turn the ringer off the phone. The way I see it, I have about 2 hrs with the kids in the evening by the time we get home and the time they go to bed. I find myself feeling like I HAVE to answer EVERY call and then I’m not really paying attn to the kids and they’re flustered and I’m flustered and we get off schedule - eating late or taking a call WHILE we’re eating. . .Other times I just let the answering machine get it and only respond to the most necessary calls. If we have company, I definitely DO NOT answer the phone. Some guests think this is weird, I’m just trying to stay attentive to our conversation and give them my full attn. There have been times when DH and I have ordered take out and then we get some unexpected company. We wait until they’re gone to eat so we’re not eating in front of them (and in the living room).

Oi vey!!!

LOL–I agree! My husband does this. (I love you, honey) And it’s like…why must you answer every call that comes in, right when it comes in?

I’m the opposite. I NEVER answer my cell. I am on the phone a lot during my workday, I’m in sales/marketing, and I can’t have two phones in my ear! I’d go crazy. lol I figure, if someone really wants to get a hold of me, he/she will leave a vm msg. I check those periodically.

I think with blackberries too…it’s like people never shut off work. Definitely a new age. I wish I didn’t have a cell phone, frankly. But, we have them for emergencies…I wouldn’t want to break down or something on the highway, and not have access to a phone…or if I’m in a traffic jam, I can call in to work and let someone know I’m alive.

I think cells are good, but like all things, they can be abused.:o

One of my co-workers does this all the time. It’s gross. I swear she has had her cell phone surgically grafted to her ear.

My husband and I went out to dinner with a couple last weekend and they both read and sent text messages on their cell phones several time during dinner. We both thought it was rude.

:rotfl: Oh my gosh, that’s hilarious.

::facepalms:: I just fell for what I just condemned. I have a headset that I have to wear when I’m away from my desk, and wouldn’t you know I get a call in the same position?

Pot? Kettle. Pleased to meet you. :^P

My husband and I went to a really nice restaurant for a romantic dinner. At the table next to us was a family of what seemed to consist of a mother, teenage son, aunt and uncle, and grandparents. The mother had her cellphone on speaker and proceded to share recipes with the caller for the duration of the entire dinner. Everyone at their table sat in silence, because when they proceded to speak she told them “shhhh” so she could hear her speaker phone.

I went to a local coffee house and right after the owner asked if she could take my order, I got one word out, and she stopped me to take a cell phone call.

How can people be so clueless and selfish? I am only 32 years old and I feel so old-fashioned sometimes. I only have a cell phone for emergencies…shame on me LOL!

you didn’t have to answer it!
There was a lady in front of us in line in the restroom the one day at the mall, her phone rang and she answered and kept right on talking the whole time she was in there, even told them where she was, incase they couldn’t understand the flushing sound I guess:p …my kids just looked at me, I didn’t know what to say… I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of a call like that.

I belong to a stamp club, we get together every month and the consultant shows us new projects and the newest products. The one lady talked on her phone through half of the meeting and we all sitting around one table, not like she was off and out of the way. It was so rude and the consultant, who is a friend of mine, was so upset, but didn’t know what to do.

LOL!
If a person doesn’t have a headset, I have to hand it to them…they are quite ambidextrous!😃

A while ago I had a friend call me asking for help and advise-in the middle of my answer she starts odering coffee from starbucks.
I politly told her to call me at a better time and hung up the phone- she said “I told you to hang on!” I thought that was rude.

:rotfl: Oh my gosh, you guys are making me laugh today. I know this is serious…lol But, it’s kinda funny.

At Subway–they post a sign that states…‘please shut your cell phone off.’ hahahaha I just can’t believe that people are so obsessed with their cells, that they are talking everywhere and anywhere. There is a couple who jog together in my neighborhood, and one day, they were BOTH chatting away, as they jogged down the street on their separate cells. I was like…wow…does the person on the other hand wonder why they are breathing so heavy?

It’s too funny!!😃

But I did! What if it was my boss (who didn’t come in today)? He’d have wondered why I wasn’t at my desk. :^P

It’s all in the shoulders. . .

Actually, the tricky part was to stand stock still. The flushers are automatic and a bit too sensitive. If you move even the slightest, there’s this great torrent of water that splooshes. And of course, I don’t want the person on the other end to know whaere I’m taking their call. :^P
