🙂 hi the original question of this thread “how can any religion that goes by the bible not beleive in the catholic church” the simplest answer to this question can be pride. ie i beleive God told me this so i beleive it to be true because i beleive it to be true so it must be true.and because i beleive what i believe to be true i do not need some one to tell me what to beleive.the fact is no single church but the catholic church can trace it’s leadership back to Christ Himself. fact Christ’s church began with Himself and those He Himself sent forth.if i choose to beleive one thing i can easily find some group to support that beleif even if it is against God’s word.
Yes and I would certainly echo that sentiment. The Catholic church is traced back to Christ. But not the Roman Catholic church. Roman Catholics claim apostolic succession along with Orthodox Catholics along with Methodists along with Lutherans along with who knows. I don’t know why pride would be an issue. Most Roman Catholics are Roman Catholics because they were brought up that way. Notice I said most not all. Our small church of just over 3000 people is 85% Roman Catholic. 8 out of every 10 new members is from the Roman Catholic church. When asked why they left you get a multitude of answers none of which is pride. Most say they simply feel their church was not feeding them spiritually. They didn’t feel close to Jesus. Now how can anyone fault someone for wanting to get close to Jesus?? Why would pride even come into the mix? To me prideful people would say “I don’t need Jesus”.

The bottom line is I don’t need the Roman Catholic church to tell me how to have a relationship with Jesus. If I accept and love him with all my heart, soul, and mind I believe he reveals himself to me. With that being said I would never brush off the extreme importance of having the church. The church is Jesus Bride. In other words we, us, are his Bride. I think Roman Catholics believe only they are Jesus’ Bride.

One, I often wonder how one who flat-out broke from the Church (Luther)and another who wasn’t formed for another couple hundred years(Wesley) could claim apostolic succession.

The EO, which is practically indiscernable as far as doctrine goes, is gradually returning to Rome as we speak.

Two, I always find it strange that those who leave the Church like to blame the Church instead of looking at themselves first. They think that for going to Mass that the Church owes them something.

Three, I bounced through my fair share of Protestant “churches” and heard their falsehoods and their wide range of ideas-which now number denominations into the tens-of-thousands, all of which were supposedly based on “scripture alone”. I doubt this kind of confusion is what Christ had in mind.

The Bible is neither self-interpreting, nor self-authenticating. Everywhere it draws together people who read the Bible differently and which in turn begin their own faith traditions that are no more or no less based on scripture than anything the Church teaches.

The difference between Protestants and Catholics is that the Catholic Church has 1500 years of interpretation from men who were much closer to Christ and the Apostles than Luther, Calvin, or Wesley, to measure itself against.

The Church, the Body of Christ, isn’t just some mystical symbol. If Paul wanted to portray it as such why didn’t he use “soul” of Christ. The reason is that the “body” of Christ was something that was meant to be seen in the world. It is the kingdom of God manifest on earth. You can’t have 30,000 bodies of Christ. There is only one flock(John 10:16), “one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of us all.”

That “Body” is the Catholic Church. Those who choose to follow their own interpretations and refuse to enter Jesus’ “one flock” are not being excluded but are excluding themselves.

inChrist-
Sadly you’re interpretation is wrong again.

Look how James’ “judgement”(Acts 15:20) is in direct agreement with the original rhetorical question by Peter of not placing a yoke on the Gentiles that they themselves could not bear. James was simply agreeing with what Peter said, not issueing any order.

Two, Paul, as with Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew, were not reproving Peter not for his doctrine but for his failure of will. They were faulting him for not living up to his own doctrine.
sighs!!! I never said James was issuing an order. People on these boards like to place words where they don’t belong so they can say you’re wrong.

I said James made the ruling. He ruled on what the content of the letter would be. He agreed with Peter but the decision on circumcision for the Gentiles wasn’t made by Peter. Peter was echoing what Jesus instructions were to them. Even I knew Gentiles didn’t need to get circumcised. Just as Paul and Barnabas knew when the men approached their church in Antioch. This was the problem they faced. FALSE Teachers.

As far as Peter living up to his own doctrine. Where do you get this stuff? This was not his doctrine. It was Jesus’ doctrine. That’s how Paul knew the 2 men were wrong as well. Not because of Peter but because of Jesus. And as far as Peter failing his will. Doesn’t this seem like strange behavior for the Pope. Peter is human and this just proves it.
At the council it was Peter that ***defined the doctrine *** which James confirmed and adapted.
You need bible study my brother. Peter did not define the doctrine. Jesus did. They all knew Gentiles did not have to get circumcised. Jesus made this quite clear.
Acts 11, when “the circumcision party” confronted him, Peter simply explained to them what God had shown him-and their hostility ended, immediately, without dissent, discussion, or further questioning. “When they heard this they were silenced” (Acts 11:18)
Peter’s authority was, in many ways, like the authority of the other Apostles. Yes, he shared power with them; he consulted with them; he received correction from them. Yet the buck always stopped with him. In Acts 1, Peter directed the apostolic college on how they with the crisis of Judas’ death.
So let’s stop grabbing one liners to support your claim. Re-read acts and then tie the whole story together. Peter visited the home of a Gentile and the Jews were mad at him for it. Peter goes on to explain the entire vision he had from GOD at which point the following reply was given.

18 When the others heard this, they stopped objecting and began praising God. They said, “We can see that God has also given the Gentiles the privilege of repenting of their sins and receiving eternal life.”

They didn’t stop objecting because of Peter. You’re trying to imply that they were bowing to Peter’s authority. They were simply amazed at what GOD had done. GOD not Peter!!
I would ask you inChrist if the office of the apostles wasn’t meant to continue in their predesessors why do they quote the OT (Acts 1:20) “His office let another take.”? Can we really persuade ourselves that this prerogative of succession was given to Judas but not to Peter?
I don’t think so.
You’re basically saying that since they had to replace Judas then why doesn’t it makes sense that the current Pope would be Peter’s replacement?? Show me in the Bible where they replaced James after he was killed by Herod. How about all the other Aposltes? Do we have replacements for them?? It’s not a 1 to 1 thing here. Do we have 12 apostles today that represent the original 12. No!! Who is Paul’s replacement?? How about John’s?? Your argument holds no water.
Clement(Phillipians 4:3) who was given Peter’s office after his death in Rome wrote to the church in Corinth, “You will give us joy and gladness if you render obedience unto the things written by us through the Holy Spirit.”
I thought Linus was given Peter’s chair after his death??
Ignatuis of Antioch(105 A.D.) addressed the Roman Church- which Peter had been in charge of and passed this office onto Clement before his death-“the Church worthy of God, worthy of honor, worthy of praise, worthy of success, worthy of sanctification, and presiding in love, maintaining the law of Christ.”
Yes thank GOD we have the church today. The entire Christian church.
Irenaeus (190 A.D.) in speaking of the Roman Church: “With this Church it is necessary that every Church, that is, the faithful who are everywhere, should be in agreement, because of her greater sovereignty; in which the apostolic tradition has always been safeguarded.”
From the earliest of her days, the universal Church-those who are everywhere-looked to Rome for leadership and sure doctrine. In the following centuries more great names of early Christianity-St. Athanasius, St. John Chrysostom, St. Basil of Caesarea, St. Augustine, St. Cyril of Alexandria-when they found themselves in trouble, they appealed to the See of Peter-to Rome-for vindication.
Christ intended Peter, and in following years those upon whom were called to Peter’s office, to be the personification of the unity that He intended for His Church.
You and other Protestants like you, reject Peter’s office.

Luke 10:16 “He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”
I don’t reject Peter or any Apostle and I don’t believe any other Protestant would either. I love how Roman Catholics dip into scripture with 1 liners to justify telling non Roman Catholics they are either going to hell or they are refusing Christ.

PEACE and GOD Bless Brother!!

FBL9 you’re missing my point badly and you need to stop putting words into my mouth, or in this case post:). I never said only I can tell the whole world. I said I don’t need the Roman Catholic church to tell me. I never even mentioned me telling anyone. Where did you get that??

Do you need the church to tell you how to have a relationship with Christ?? No. Our relationship with Christ is personal. That’s what I mean. As far as having pride. Are you kidding? I am so humbled by Christ. I am nothing without GOD or Jesus. Actually “nothing” is too good of a word to describe me without Jesus.

What I think we need from the church, which is the entire body of Christ, is guidance. And they are very happy to give that to you. Catholic and non-Catholic. I believe my church provides excellent guidance. but i’ve also had some great conversations with Catholic Priests whom I also love and respect greatly. I respect all our spiritual leaders. But they would never claim to tell you how to have a relationship with Jesus. I learned that in Catholic school 30 years ago. The Priests always told us that they couldn’t tell us how to have a relationship with Jesus. It was up to us. Go ask your Priest this question and see what he tells you. If you need a Priest to tell you how to have a relationship with Jesus then you obviously can’t think for yourself. Jesus doesn’t want a Priest to prescribe to you a way to have a relationship with HIM. Jesus just wants your heart and nobody can tell you how to give it. Only you know how. The church maybe able to help but that’s it. There’s no formula. Are seeing what I’m saying??

PEACE and GOD Bless

I believe GOD is everywhere. If I walk into a Catholic church or any church for that matter I believe in GOD’s spiritual presence. I don’t then walk out and say: OK I’m not in GOD’s spiritual presence anymore. GOD took up physical presence in the Temple in the form of smoke that was visible to everyone. GOD left the temple and as far as I know has not taken up physical residence in any building in that form. If you know of one please do tell. With that being said I believe GOD is everywhere spiritually at all times. To say that HE is not is to deny HIS Omnipresence. QUOTE]

You are on the verge of an ancient heresy here. Some people will say, particularly the Buddist, that God is in a cow, so he worships the cow and will not kill it to eat. He sees God in rats, and he elevates the rat to the point of being God, and he will not kill the rats even though they carry plagues. In fact, he would rather starve then kill an animal. It is a little bit reminiscent of the golden calf worshipped by the Eqyptians during Moses’ day.

God is in a rock, so I can eat a rock and I am eating God. This borders on modern day Pantheism.

Gene

incrist101 you misread i asked ARE you… that is not puttin words in your mouth in my opinion. if you don’t want me to be friendly then i guess that is you choice.“I am nothin without God or Jesus. Actually nothing is to good a word.to describe me without Jesus” We can’t walk away saying we didn’t agree on one thing at least.keep the painted side up eh.

sighs!!! I never said James was issuing an order. People on these boards like to place words where they don’t belong so they can say you’re wrong.
You were implying that James, not Peter, was directing the council and henceforth the Church. You have to keep up your aversion and rejection of Peter as Prince of the Apostles because to accept this truth would mean that your are in error.
Show me in Acts 15 where Jesus specifically spoke.
Show me here where Jesus specifically spoke to Peter and told him to tell them this.
You need bible study my brother. Peter did not define the doctrine. Jesus did. They all knew Gentiles did not have to get circumcised. Jesus made this quite clear.
Peter defined doctrine under the guidence of the Spirit, as did all of the Popes to this day.
So let’s stop grabbing one liners to support your claim. Re-read acts and then tie the whole story together. Peter visited the home of a Gentile and the Jews were mad at him for it. Peter goes on to explain the entire vision he had from GOD at which point the following reply was given.
The fact is that I am using proper proof-texting to explain and defend the Church and what it teaches. You don’y like it so you’re trying to accuse me of taking something out of context.
Not very convincing.
They didn’t stop objecting because of Peter. You’re trying to imply that they were bowing to Peter’s authority. They were simply amazed at what GOD had done. GOD not Peter!!
They stopped objecting because they knew what Peter, guided by the Spirit, was teaching to be true.
Peter, Paul, John and other Apostles left Bishops(overseers) all over to direct those local churches that they founded. These are their replacements. St. Polycarp was a direct disciple of St. John, Ignatius was a follower of Polycarp. Many others are recorded that I don’t have the time to name.

What is fact is that both Peter and Paul intended Rome, since it was the center of the ancient world, to be the center of the newly formed kingdom of God-the Church.
Yes thank GOD we have the church today. The entire Christian church.
What is the “entire Christian church?” What is your scriptural basis that Jesus intended this fractured and confused Christianity where so many people disagree with basic truths of faith and how to worship?
I don’t reject Peter or any Apostle and I don’t believe any other Protestant would either. I love how Roman Catholics dip into scripture with 1 liners to justify telling non Roman Catholics they are either going to hell or they are refusing Christ.

PEACE and GOD Bless Brother!!
I never made a judgement against you or said you were going to hell-talk about putting words in people’s mouth!

I am simply warning you out of love of the error of Protestantism and the truth of Catholicism. It is up to you to either accept or reject it.

Now you mention other churchs being “ruled” by bishops. Keep in mind that this is only true of a very very few number of other religions, most bishops are in union with Rome. They are sort of like congressmen.
The pope is president, cardinals are senators, bishops are congressmen, monsignors are governors, and priests mayors.

Most protestant religions do not have a central leader, or if they do it is usually some sort of group leadership. So they do not have bishops, or if they do, they do not have the same power as Catholic bishops.

I think all Protestants believe that there is such a thing as the Roman Catholic Church, but all believe that its doctrines are false. The reason protestant religions are called protestant is because they are protesting what the RCC teaches. That is how 98% of all original protestant religions got started: by protesting something the RCC taught.
Luther was protesting the selling of indugences
King Henry VIII was protesting the Church’s stance on divorce
ETC…
The mormons were different, but they are not Christian, so I will leave it there.
thank you for clearing that up for me. I really never knew what the big difference between them were. I knew it wasnt alot and i was told that the only difference was the bishops. But the only thing i know is what my dad told me one time. And from what he knew the Church itself was very close, if not just like ours. I believe you have the sacraments, communion, every is basically the same. And the reason i say the difference is the bishops, we are just solely by the pope. But now you gave me a better understanding. So basically you are saying its really the same. The Mass that is.

Ok i can understand what you are saying. But do you call your church a Catholic church and do you feel you are following the Catholic Faith.

Now im just asking there may be a church out there called a Protestant Catholic Church. Im just asking. I dont know. And if all churchs are Catholic why dont they all say they are. See this is just where i cant get it. IT just dont sink in to me. But please no disrespect to anyones church or religion i swear this is not what this post was about. But thank you for your answer it just dont seem right to me. But it may be the correct answer but its not connecting with me.
Theologically, of course Protestants think they are Catholic. We use the word “Catholic” about you guys out of courtesy, just as we speak of the “Church of Christ” without saying that we are not also part of the Church of Christ.

Unfortunately, many Catholics abuse our courtesy by assuming that it means that we admit to not being part of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

Anglicans in particular are insistent that we are part of the Catholic Church, though we vary in just how we define it. Many Anglicans would agree with other Protestants that the Catholic Church is made up of all those who believe in the Trinity. However, Anglo-Catholics (i.e., the wing of our church that is closest to you in belief and practice) would say that you have to have apostolic succession to be part of the Catholic Church.

Edwin

OK But does your church have the sacraments. I was taught that in order for a church to be the true church you are correct it must be what you said ONE CATHOLIC APOSTOLIC. that is true and i agree with that. So what i am understanding you to say the a protestant church is ONE CATHOLIC APOSTOLIC. Or am i miunderstanding you. Again please no disrespect. I hate to argue scripture. And like I have said many of times i am not that educated in it to do so. Im just a curious person. By the way did this quesion ever come up before. Just wondering?.

one more quick question You gave us the word Catholic out of courtesy, why did you do that, why didnt we return the favor, and why my whole life did protestants always rip on Catholics.

One, I often wonder how one who flat-out broke from the Church (Luther)and another who wasn’t formed for another couple hundred years(Wesley) could claim apostolic succession.

The EO, which is practically indiscernable as far as doctrine goes, is gradually returning to Rome as we speak.
The post had to be broken in 2 Sorry:D

I often hear Roman Catholics and Protestants for that matter claiming Apostolic succession. Where do you get this unbroken chain non-sense. Neither the Apostles creed nor the Nicene creed contain the words Apostolic succession. One Holy Catholic and Apostolic church. Not Apostolic succession. The church is based on the foundation of the Apostles not Aposolic succession. Being able to say you have 1 unbroken chain of Bishops that traces back to Peter although great for historical teaching hardly justifies the Roman Catholic church as the only church of Jesus. An Apostolic church means:
  1. Pertaining to an apostle, or to the apostles, their times, or their peculiar spirit; as, an apostolical mission; the apostolic age.
  2. According to the doctrines of the apostles; delivered or taught by the apostles; as, apostolic faith or practice.
I believe the Bible constitutes number 2. Any church that teaches the Bible is teaching what the Apostles taught. I’m pretty sure our church believes what the Apostles believed and teaches what the Apostles teach. I would say then that we are part of the Catholic (universal) and Apostolic church. We don’t need Apostolic succession. Besides that how do we know one of our founders couldn’t trace themselves back to the Apostles?? Or any church for that matter.
Two, I always find it strange that those who leave the Church like to blame the Church instead of looking at themselves first. They think that for going to Mass that the Church owes them something.
The church does owe them something my brother. The church is responsible for saving those that are lost and for edifying those that are already saved. If you can’t get fed spiritually going to church then why go. To say you are a member?? Does Jesus just want members so the numbers can look great?? No he gave us the great commission which started with the Apostles. Go and make disciples. Sound familiar? The attitude you are masking for the church is the same arrogant attitude that is driving people away. If the church doesn’t offer anything then no one will come.

Given that I would definitely say when you come to church you better be ready to worship and Praise GOD. No one should just sit back and say “OK what do you have for me? ho hum ho hum, are we done yet” I think we both have probably seen plenty of that. But when you leave the feeling should be WOW I really heard a rich message and was able to join my fellow Christians in deep fellowship.
Three, I bounced through my fair share of Protestant “churches” and heard their falsehoods and their wide range of ideas-which now number denominations into the tens-of-thousands, all of which were supposedly based on “scripture alone”. I doubt this kind of confusion is what Christ had in mind.
I wouldn’t disagree with you. We just had this discussion at our church. One of our Pastors was commenting on all the “watered down” versions of Christian churches that seemed to be popping up today. I for one love the rich tradition of the Christian church and don’t believe in ever compromising our beliefs in an effort to cater to the changing times. Our beliefs morally and ethically are still applicable today and will be forever.
The Bible is neither self-interpreting, nor self-authenticating. Everywhere it draws together people who read the Bible differently and which in turn begin their own faith traditions that are no more or no less based on scripture than anything the Church teaches.
That was sort of confusing. But basically what you are saying is there is danger in just picking up the Bible, reading it, and then starting your own church. Correct?? I agree 100%. Just as I went to school to learn technology and have been a technology professional for over 20 years, I would hardly think I can start my own church just after readnig the Bible. Paul even cautions us on letting new members in the church become leaders within the church let alone starting their own church.

With that said that doesn’t mean that there aren’t alot of really great churches non Roman catholic, but still Catholic out there. I believe ours is one for sure and didn’t pick it by just walking in and saying “this feels good enough”. There are some real wacky beliefs out there.
The difference between Protestants and Catholics is that the Catholic Church has 1500 years of interpretation from men who were much closer to Christ and the Apostles than Luther, Calvin, or Wesley, to measure itself against.
You’re implying that the Protestant churches started in a complete vacuum. Like they basically said “OK, forget all that history and tradition, let’s start over” They were Protesting some very specific doctrines, not all doctrines as folks imply on these boards. If that’s what the Roman Catholic church is teaching then maybe they should take a history lesson. Our church always references beliefs and practices that stem back to ancient times.

2nd part. Sorry again:D

Agree 100%. The problem with you is that you see it as 30,000 bodies where I believe Jesus sees it as 1 large body with some differences of opinion within. Does HE like it? I don’t believe he does but he also knew it would happen. The differences though between us have no impact on our salvation. Keep it simple John 3:16. All Christians believe that.
That “Body” is the Catholic Church. Those who choose to follow their own interpretations and refuse to enter Jesus’ “one flock” are not being excluded but are excluding themselves.
Again, agree 100%. But I don’t see non Roman Catholic churches as reading the Bible and turning away from Jesus. The Bible leads you direcly to Jesus.

PEACE and GOD Bless

Now Gene, I never said GOD is in the cow. Can you show me where I said that or even implied it?? Why do some folks on these boards try to place words in the post that were never said, then try to ridicule them for that which they never said??
  1. I just say I believe GOD is everywhere. 2. I don’t believe that he is and of itself THE building, cow or rat. I was taught number 1 in Catholic school. Did they teach me the wrong thing? What I refuse to do though is say that GOD is NOT somewhere. I cannot nor can you speak for where GOD is. GOD created everything. Nothing exists without HIM. To say that he is not everywhere doesn’t seem to make sense.

incrist101 you misread i asked ARE you… that is not puttin words in your mouth in my opinion. if you don’t want me to be friendly then i guess that is you choice.“I am nothin without God or Jesus. Actually nothing is to good a word.to describe me without Jesus” We can’t walk away saying we didn’t agree on one thing at least.keep the painted side up eh.
Apologies fbl9. Maybe I mistook your post as sarcasm. Definitely let’s be friendly. No shouting and keep the painted side up. Good one:)

Now do I really need to answer you?? Of course not I already did. Your relationship with Jesus is just as personal as my relationship with Jesus. I don’t know what makes you tick inside and certainly no church does either. What we were taught in Catholic school was the first step to having a relationship with Jesus was accepting him as your savior. Beyond that everything else comes from your heart. What Christian church does not teach that today?

Can i just say something, Again you 2 are priceless. But just think about this. Even if you dont believe God left the church to Peter, do you see why he had to put someone in charge. I dont ask anyone to believe what i believe, but back to my (its just not clicking with me ) To me this is another reason God would leave the church to Peter. ITs makes sense. Some one has to be able to tell the truth. Thats why i believe the Pope. Just look at it this way for one second, no matter what religion you are. Even if you disagree with what the Pope says, You can still see how he saw it. Like when the pope says that Jesus gave Peter the keys to the Kingdom. Okay you can say you agree or disagree thats okay. But see he did say it… When the pope explains something he can show you in many many books why he said it and show your scripture to back it up. But we cant. We just pick eachother apart. Like the only thing i am getting back on my quesion that still doesnt make sense is now the protestants are Catholic. Now i cant say yes you are or no your arent. Im not Protestant, but now if i say all protestants are Catholic do you really believe they are all going to agree with this. No Way. BUt if i say all Catholic Churchs are Catholic not one Catholic is going to disagree. Now if i say . So that why its still not clicking. But see if i am Catholic and someones says the Pope said this, And even if i may not agree with it and he shows me scripture i can at least say okay i can see how you can say that. Do you understand my point. And do you understand why i cant get any of yours. Yet. I swear i will try. but nothing has made sense yet. sorry to cut in on your 2 , but in a way its kind of what i am saying. Do you see what i mean.

the key issue in Apostolic succession is aurthority. Christ gave the apostles authority who in turn gave that to heads of the church at different locations.which contniues this day in the Catholic church. Aurthority is given not taken by one self, one who takes aurthority is an usurper.

Now I cant disagree with this becasue it makes sense. Now if I ask you to back it up with scripture I know you can. Now do i have to agree with you no. No one can make me do that. But see thats my point in the end if i cant show you in the bible what you say isnt true, It must be true.
