rinnie-
I’m sorry if I’m too direct on this, but no, the devil is not everywhere. The devil is a created being and is not omnipotent nor omnipresent. Only God is.

inChrist-

You really should take a closer look at Acts before you keep denying the primacy of Peter:

Acts 15:7 And after there had been much debate, Peter rose and said to them, “Brethren, you know that in the early days **God made choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe.” **

Luke, who was a companion of Paul by the way, is making it very explicit which person is in charge. And that person is Peter.
The devil tries to get everywhere.

Keep reading that Acts chapter and see who makes the ruling. It was James not Peter. Actually before that take notice that the Apostles AND the elders were gathered to discuss this. This is how they worked. Like a council. Peter didn’t just say this is how it is. They actually drafted a letter as a group and as a group decided who would deliver it. See Peter acting like the Pope making those decisions. Then flip to Galatians and read how Paul publicly rebuked Peter for his behavior. Look at the words used to describe Peter’s behavior. Not very fitting of a Pope wouldn’t you say? How dare Paul talk to the first Pope like that!!

I must have misrepresented my self if what you are asking me is if I believe that Peter was the head of the church 100%. Unless i am misunderstanding you. As far as to say that the devil is only here and there. I do believe that he is everywhere. God tells us that beware he is in my clothing. Now if you are asking me if he has control over us no. Thats up to us. We have free will. Remember God said he is the Master of deceit. If the devil wasnt everywhere we would never sin. Its THE DEVIL who finds our weakness . And when he does look out. Ask anyone with an addiction how the devil will really work you over. You know these kids that are on crack cocaine are finding out that even thru rehab its not working. It is through rehab AND JESUS CHRIST THAT THEY MAKE IT. that is how strong the devil can be. If you want to make the devil run just ask for Christ. He can beat us. but he cant beat Christ. But see if we run to Christ he will leave us alone.
Rinnie AWESOME response. Couldn’t have said it better myself.

inchrist101 Just to lighten things up a bit. remember the story about the devil going to church.
Everyone was in church praying and all of a sudden the doors swing open and in walks the devil.

Well everyone runs out of the church screaming and carrying on except this one little old man.

So the devil comes over and says, do you know who i am? The old man says yeah i know who you are.

The devil says then who am i?

The old man says your satan

The devil says everyone ran out of here they are afraid of me, arent you afraid of me?

The old man says hell no, why should i be afraid of you ive been married to your sister for 50 years.
Rinnie an oldy but still a goody.

GOD Bless you. You are very sweet.

You want to hear something even more unbelievable. alot of these kids never believed in Jesus. Never disbelieved either. never really gave it much thought. But it just goes to show you how Jesus can take something so bad and so horrible and make good out of it. Trust me i know. These kids are struggling. At least we know where to go when we are in trouble. These kids are learning the hard way. I mean when it is all said and done. Go to God. Just get there.

Interesting. You really think Heaven begins now?? …

I’m glad I participate in the Lord’s supper every week.

I’m having trouble with the Heaven begins now but that’s OK
Well, yes. Heaven does begin now. So does hell.

If I choose sin over Heaven, then hell has taken root in me. This is the experience of hell now and potentially in eternity for me.

To avoid hell, I need to avail myself of Christ’s forgiveness. I need to take action and reject sin. If I accept the Grace of God and take action to reject the sin, and confess my sins as it is written in the book of James, then Jesus puts me back into Heaven through the working of the Holy Spirit. Why else would I go to Confession except to be obedient to scripture and to receive the foregiveness that Jesus promises?

I did not know that Jesus’ sacrifice was being made manifest in your church, or that Jesus’ Body and Blood was being offerred for communion during your experience of the “Lord’s Supper”. I know this is true in the Catholoic and Orthodox churches. However, I do not know of any non-catholic chuches who even come close to believing this, let alone actually experiencing this reality. What church is it that you belong to?

Interesting view. I must say I can’t disagree. The church I belong to is called Mountain Christian. Jesus said this is my Body this is my Blood. Why shouldn’t we believe him?? Sometimes people get so enamered with their arguments that they forget that it was Jesus who actually told us many things about our Faith. I also think that AME has the belief that the bread and wine are his body and blood. But I can’t say 100%. Our pastor stresses the point of examining yourself before even considering partaking in the lord’s supper. Just as Paul tells us in the Bible.

🙂 hi incrist101… i saw in another post you stated your group celebrates The Lord’s Supper. and we have the simular beliefs regarding Jesus’s precence in the form of bread and wine.so that brings a question from me… say one comes to your church to worship with you all, this person does not believe that Christ is present in the bread offered to him at the Lord’s supper.when this person eats this bread, is Christ still present to them?..in another post you indicated James made the decision not to burden the Gentiles with circumcism…no James stated we should send them written instructions regarding other practices.going by what was written in my bible James made no decsion regarding circumcism.till next time eh.

Yeah,
I checked out the website. Sounds like your church got started about 175 years ago. The founders made a very big deal about rejecting credalism for the sake of unity. I am not sure how that makes sense? The Church has had a Creed since ever. But, to accomplish greater “unity”, your founding fathers rejected any form of a creed. Hmmm… If you don’t have a creed, you don’t know what you believe and no one else does either, so it is easier to maintain unity. Sounds like it means obtaining unity at the price of a lack of objective substance. Sounds like the faith equivalent of a moral relativism. Out with the oppressive creed, in the make it your own sort of deal. Nah. Not for me. Unfortunately, the USA was founded on the principles of moral and faithful relativism. I want the church Christ started, not the church of men.

So it’s not for you. That’s OK. GOD lead me and my family there and I believe he wants us to stay there.

PEACE GOD Bless and see you in Heaven

Jesus told us this is my body and blood. So if one participates in communion then doesn’t that mean Jesus body and blood are the bread and wine? I can’t speak for what Jesus would do with someone who receives it and doesn’t believe in his real physical presence. I know plenty of Catholics who participate in communion that don’t subscribe to transubstatiation. Does that mean Jesus is not physically present for them either? How about the Catholics that go to service maybe twice a year out of obligation for Christmas and Easter. They probably don’t remember what they were taught. Is Jesus present for them as well?? The bottom line is Jesus is present so you better be ready for it. This is why we tell people to examine themselves just as Paul told the Corinthains who were badly abusing the Lord’s supper. Let me ask you this. If a non-believer attends service for the very first time and receives communion is Jesus present or not?

I don’t think it matters what we believe, I think it’s what Jesus declares. If you eat that bread and drink the wine be ready for Jesus.
…in another post you indicated James made the decision not to burden the Gentiles with circumcism…no James stated we should send them written instructions regarding other practices.going by what was written in my bible James made no decsion regarding circumcism.till next time eh.
Boy you missed that one big time. James didn’t have to rule on circumcision because the Gentiles were not practicing it. The decision was do we tell them yes they have to or do we leave it alone. If the letter would have stated you gentiles don’t have to get circumcised, they would have said we already know that. As Peter so eloquently said:

So why are you now challenging God by burdening the Gentile believers** with a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors were able to bear? 11We believe that we are all saved the same way, by the undeserved grace of the Lord Jesus.”

Oh Peter I do Love you so much. I really do.

To which James responds:

19 “And so my judgment is that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. (Meaning let’s not force circumcision) 20 Instead, we should write and tell them to abstain from eating food offered to idols, from sexual immorality, from eating the meat of strangled animals, and from consuming blood. 21 For these laws of Moses have been preached in Jewish synagogues in every city on every Sabbath for many generations.”

James wasn’t ruling on just circumcision. It was what do we tell the Gentiles in case they have contact with Jews. This became a common problem back then because the Gentiles represented a new wrinkle for them as evidenced by Peter’s difficult encounter. Getting a letter to them was to help prevent Jews from falsely teaching them.

The delivery of the letter was then determined by a council made up of Apostles and Elders.

The gentlemen in the other post made the point that no one had ever challenged the authority of Peter. I simply commented on Paul’s public rebuke of Peter and his handling of this encounter with Gentiles. Read Galatians to see Pauls comments.

Would any Bishop or Cardinal even attempt to publicly rebuke the Pope today? I say no because he probably would be cast out as a heretic.

PEACE and GOD Bless.**

Well guys its time for me to say so long. I got alot of answers to my question but i just didnt get the right one, at least not for me. But thats okay too. I just didnt get there yet. I may never get a answer. But i learned something too. Maybe more important. When a Catholic and Protestant try to help each other in a question. Seeds are planted, BUT only if the Catholic answered the Protestant with dignity and respect and it came from the heart. Even if the Catholic gave the wrong answer or right if the Catholic didnt give it with the Protestants best interest at heart and started fighting with Protestant and the Protestant walked away with grace and dignity even if the Catholic was right the Protestant won. And God was proud of the Protestant. Same with the Catholic if the Protestant doesnt want to hear it and only wants to fight rather thier point is valid or not if they didnt use dignity and respect and the Catholic walked away in peace the Catholic won. But if they both talk with dignity and respect seeds are planted. Now once these seeds are planted its for Gods grace to grow these seeds. Like in church a few weeks ago about good soil and bad. You all know what i mean. I have one more point to make. I was always Catholic. Never in a Protestant church in my whole life till i met my husband. The first time i walked in there i looked at the cross. My husband said whats wrong i said something missing i dont know what it is. This is a cute church. Then i looked at the cross. It was empty. Jesus was missing. I said thats it Jesus is missing on the cross. the cross is empty. See thats why im Catholic and will always be. I need Jesus on the Cross. Thats why I belong in the Catholic Church. And the Protestant doesnt need Jesus on the cross thats why he needs to be in the Protestant Church. Just like the priests who done wrong. Believe me they got away with nothing. God will punish them. But just because they done wrong even though im Catholic i cant defend evil and wrong. But on the other hand they did evil and wrong. not my Church. Not GOd. They may have used his church and believe me he will take care of that, But see im still Catholic i love and believe the faith. And i will defend it. But i will not argue scripture. Then i will be the one who planted the bad seeds and they will never grow. I will try my hardest to show why i believe and what i believe but i cant make people belieive. Only God can do that. And he gives us different roads to travel. But we are all trying to get to the same Place. Heaven, where the devil will never be. But as long as he is here. He will try to stop us from that. Lets all try not to help him. Ive learned alot and i feel this was a good thread. ANd i do believe we all did good this time. And inchrist 101 you have a special place in my heart. And you showed me something too, You are a Catholic in the Protestant Church. Thats in my eyes. And you are where God put you for now. Maybe forever who knows only his grace will lead you. But people drove you from the church not God. But you have showed me sometimes circumstances beyond your control and mine happened to you. But you sir have peace in your heart. And for right now you are where you need to be. I pray you come back to the faith some day i believe you belong there but then again i dont think you really left the faith. I can see in many ways you are still living the true Catholic faith. God bless you all and again i feel this was one of the few thread seeds have been planted now lets let Gods grace decide again what to grow. I have done many of threads. i didnt do too good on my seeds. Lets hope im getting better. God Bless and Good Bye And hope to see you all again, Sure i will

I thought of this the other day.

There are those that take the position that it is fine for everyone to read the Bible and interpret it themselves. So, if a Catholic reads the Bible and interprets certain passages to be in support of Catholic doctrine, how can you really criticize them? You really ought not.

However, someone who would make an interpretation of Scripture that is contrary to Catholic doctrine faces two things, the challenge of history and the Magisterium of the Church.

I can pick up a book written by a Catholic author is the fifth century, 13th century or 16th century, and agree with what is written about faith and morals. Can any other Christian religion do that?

Agree 100%.
However, someone who would make an interpretation of Scripture that is contrary to Catholic doctrine faces two things, the challenge of history and the Magisterium of the Church.
Your implication here is that the Magisterium are 100% infallible in their interpetations. I’m not saying they are or aren’t. But let’s face it, parts of the Bible can be interpreted in many different ways. Leading theologians today still debate scripture. I heard an Evangelist describing the potential for worshiping GOD the wrong way. I thought this will be interesting. He used the example of when Samuel told Saul to kill all the Amalekites including all animals. Of course Saul got greedy and saved some of the animals for himself. When Samuel called him out on it Saul basically said “oh, uhhh, well I wasn’t keeping them for myself I was going to sacrifice them to GOD.” To which Samuel basically says: yeah RIGHT BUDDY. Don’t think you can fool GOD. But listening to this sermon the evangelist basically tried to make it seem like Saul had good intentions and GOD said “WHOA”, that’s the wrong way pal. So I thought wow here’s a guy getting radio time and anyone listening who doesn’t know scripture wouldn’t know the difference. But then again maybe I was completely misunderstanding his message.

There are some things that we will have to wait for GOD to clarify. If agreeing with everything the Magisterium teaches keeps your Faith in Jesus strong, then GOD Bless the Magisterium for feeding you spiritually. But don’t criticize someone who may see it differently. Both sides may be wrong. I don’t think GOD is going to turn his back on us for desperately trying to understand his word and then feeding from it spiritually. To the contrary I think it pleases immensely.
I can pick up a book written by a Catholic author is the fifth century, 13th century or 16th century, and agree with what is written about faith and morals. Can any other Christian religion do that?
I don’t think any Christian would disagree with Catholics about Faith in Jesus and about maintaining good morals. What’s the issue here??

I hope you find the answer to your questions.

A little bit, But please beer with me and i mean beer with me you will probally need one to get this one through my thick head. Lets start with protestants, okay as a kid i was always teased you Catholics. lets start there. Do they believe in the Catholic church.
Protestants do not think that the Catholic Church mentioned in the Creed is limited to Christians who are in communion with Rome.

When you start to study Moral Theology, you will begin to see moral choices in three terms:
  1. Circumstances
  2. Intentions
  3. Objective sense
In alomst all case, when someone is appealing to to make their case, they start talking about how good their intentions are. I want to kill my baby in my womb because I do not love it and there are too many people in the world, yadda, yadda.

Or, I am not old enough to raise this baby, so my circumstances justify my decision.

When the truth is, there is an objective sense, and objective reality that is always true. The baby is alive, and to kill it is always worng, no matter what the circumstance, and no matter what the intention.

Same with Saul and God.

Same with the Churches authority to teach on Moral issues,.

Not everything you can’t. Not without a lot of spin. Over and over again on these forums we have heard Catholics say things like “well St. Thomas Aquinas/Augustine/Chrysostom/whoever was just one theologian and not infallible.” Your statement is simply not true.

There’s really no difference in principle in how a traditional, high-church Protestant reads Aquinas or Augustine and how you do. We agree that they are of great authority but that they are not infallible, and that their teachings must be tested against the infallible Word of God. The difference is in how we define the Word of God and how we think the Word of God is to be interpreted (i.e., does it have an infallible magisterial interpreter).

The bait-and-switch with regards to the Fathers needs to stop. In many ways we Anglicans have a higher regard for patristic authority than you guys do, because we don’t think patristic teaching is trumped by later developments.

Edwin

Oh sorry.
They believe in Believer’s baptism. You must be able to choose baptism for yourself. And re-baptism when needed.
Historically this is not a mainstream Protestant belief. The Reformers had people executed for rebaptizing.
They believe in Hell. Big time. With enthusiasm. And Catholics are certainly going there.
They believe in Heaven. No Catholics allowed.
These are not things most Protestants today believe (with regard to Catholics–we still believe in heaven and hell!).

Catholic-Protestant discussion would be easier if you would not generalize from your bad experiences with certain modern American fundamentalists.

Edwin

Yes I agree with JRKH. Most Protestants, if they give it any thought to it at all, seem to think that the Reformation was necessary because the Catholic Church had become corrupt, and the reformers brought the Church back to it’s original purity. There’s a Christian organization where I live that has as its creed. “I believe in the one holy and Christian Church”.
Some I have found are not really interested in the historical roots of their own Church. Today they are in a Christian community where they are fed with the Scriptures and the fellowship. Their pastors seem to be spirit filled, able to interpret the Bible and they don’t question that too deeply. They first learned about Jesus from their Church, and have a deep loyalty to that Church. Some aren’t interested in ritual. They prefer a more spontaneous form of worship.
If you talk about Protestants you are talking about a multitude of different beliefs.
Pope John Paul said that what unites us is greater than what divides us, but there are certain doctrines where we can’t all be right. So it boils down to: who has the authority to interpret the scriptures, and what is the Truth.
Jesus said "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.
The Truth matters. But unfortunately we often can’t discuss our differences in an amicable way, and often can’t discuss them at all because people are satisfied with what they have, and there’s a lot of good in what they believe and do.
Christian unity is one of those things that seems impossible to men, but all things are possible with God.
