I surely am aware that the Apostles were not carrying around the Bible in their back pockets like we do today. Why would they, they were the ones who wrote most of it.
The scriptures Paul was referring to was obviously the Old testament. They did have scrolls in the Temple and in fact we see Jesus picking them up and referencing them. The point is that just as Paul instructed Timothy to trust scripture the same applies to us today. Only we have the benefit of actually having the Bible. When the early churches struggled whether it was persecution, false teachers, bad practices etc. the Apostles wrote to them. Don’t we consider what they wrote as scripture?? If so then how does Paul’s statement to Timothy not apply to us today??
Here’s what I would like you to do. Show me one teaching of the church that has absolutely no scriptural support whatsover. Name one please.
The last paragraph first: There is no teaching of the Church which has no “scriptural support”!
BUT, one could, through “private revelation”, come to the conclusion that the Holy Trinity is NOT scriptural because the word “Trinity” is not to be found there.
SOME traditions hold that opinion! They claim we “trinitarians” are non-scriptural.
This is why there needs to be a single decision maker, a “Pontifex Maximus”, as you so nicely brought up. We need a “bridge”, a SINGLE bridge, a single conduit, through which to have truths which are SINGULAR in their meaning as all truths MUST BE SINGULAR in their meanings.
You would have truth be a matter “concensus”. I would most certainly not.
On the first two paragraphs above: The churches had the apostles present, though time delayed, to answer their specific problems. The apostles responded with “living words” which were tailored to the needs of those who had problems.
The bible, for all it’s wonders, is a set piece. It is not in itself in any way “responsive” such that it will change itself to suit those asking it questions.
Am I saying that all answers to all matters of faith and morals can’t be found within the bible? No. But to FIND THEM there is an interpretation of the FIXED WORDS of scripture necesssary, which is what tradition is!
Having a bible without a tradition to give it meaning is to possess a doorstop and nothing more. A tree has no use for a bible. An feral illiterate child has no use of a bible. There must be some means of transfering the wisdom of the bible to the mind of a man to make it in any way meaningful (useful), and that is done ONLY by way of a tradition that can make sense of it.
The apostles WERE the tradition which interpreted scripture correctly for those who wanted a correct interpretation. When the apostles died out, they left those taught by them to continue the tradition of correctness of interpretation of scripture. That tradition is not re-invented wholesale when an isolated person simply picks up a bible and begins reading it.
It is a lovely thought that the bible is an easy thing to draw wisdom from, but that is not reality. To deny the most experienced and SINGLE God-assured infallible tradition due to an inherent sociologically distaste for “authority figures” is to trade one’s comfort for truth. Who would make that trade?
It is simply impossible to state that: if no one source of truth is more infallible than any other then I (the speaker) can INFALLIBLY say that your (the Catholic) source is NOT infallible!
You MUST grant that possibility! We claim that that possibility is in fact the truth, and await any and all attempts at proving it untrue to our “infallible” satisfaction.
