Do you desire to have these gifts? Go back and read my original posts where I quote the archbisop and John of the Cross.

When the apostles recieve the gift of speaking in tonges is was so that everyone listenting could understand (in their own language) what was being preached to them. I hear no comparison coming from charismatics who believe their’s is the same gift.
We fragile, weak humans seem to be stuck on just one of the gifts, don’t we? I re-read 1 Corinthians 14. Prophecy is clearly preferable to tongues. Tongues seems to me to be easily used for one’s own purposes rather than God’s. The remaining gifts are not as public, not as dramatic, but sorely needed to build the church.

May the peace of Christ be with all of you.

1Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. 2For anyone who speaks in a tongue[a] does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.** 3But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. 4He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5I would like every one of you to speak in tongues,[c] but **I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues,[d] unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified. ** 6Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction? 7Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the flute or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? 8Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle? 9So it is with you. **Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. **10Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. 11If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and he is a foreigner to me. 12So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.

13For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says. 14For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. 16If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand[e] say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? 17You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified.

18I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults. 21In the Law it is written:
“Through men of strange tongues
and through the lips of foreigners
I will speak to this people,
but even then they will not listen to me,”[f] says the Lord.

22Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers. 23So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand[g] or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? 24But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand[h]comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all, 25and the secrets of his heart will be laid bare. So he will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”**

ok-what’s your point? I don’t speak and have never spoken in tongues and it is a gift that can and has caused major problems in the church that’s why I’m very familiar with Paul’s take and agree with him.

Doug50,

Thanks for posting the scripture! I cannot visit the forums without scripture beside me. Paul claims that tongues is certainly a gift, but a limited one. When I was baptized in the Holy Spirit, I was expecting that tongues would be revealed. What I got was prophecy. All the better. Praise God!

Thanks again and Christ’s peace be with you.

I have to fall back onto a Church Doctor, Saint John of the Cross

“6. And if it is true that, for the reasons already described, it behoves the soul to close its eyes to the aforementioned revelations which come to it, and which concern the propositions of the faith, how much more necessary will it be neither to receive nor to give credit to other revelations relating to different things, wherein the devil habitually meddles so freely that I believe it impossible for a man not to be deceived in many of them unless he strive to reject them, such an appearance of truth and security
does the devil give them? For he brings together so many appearances and probabilities, in order that they may be believed, and plants them so firmly in the sense and the imagination, that it seems to the person affected that what he says will certainly happen; and in such a way does he cause the soul to grasp and hold them, that, if it have not humility, it will hardly be persuaded to reject them and made to believe the contrary. Wherefore, the
soul that is pure, cautious, simple and humble must resist revelations and other visions with as much effort and care as though they were very perilous temptations.
For there is no need to desire them; on the contrary, there is need not too desire them, if we are to reach the union of love. It is this that Solomon meant when he said:˜What need has a man to desire and seek things that are above his natural capacity? [455] As though we were to say: He has no necessity, in order to be perfect, to desire supernatural things by supernatural means, which are above his capacity.”

The type of tongues that was manifested at the preaching in Acts is only one of many of the diversity of language gifts given by the Spirit. you are right, there is not much comparison, except that there are many varieties, but only one spirit. Do not quench the gifts of the spirit, and earnestly desire the best gifts, scripture teaches.

What are these prophecies?
Your question indicates that you do not understand what the gift of prophesy is, and it’s purpose. It is not about foretelling the future, if that is what you are inquiring. Your quote from John seems to indicate that they are from the devil? Perhaps I misunderstood the intention of your post.

Perhaps you, personally, have no need to seek to understand supernatural things by supernatural power. However, there are those of us that do, and plead with you not to disparage us. If yuo withdraw from the gift from fear, to protect yourself, then you areto be commended for your devotion to that which you cling.

I don’t believe you understand…but there is a hint of it in your reply.

Deeping your faith is not about deeping your feelings. It’s about deeping your knowing. To know Him is to love Him. Feelings and jazzed up emotions are something else. If someone tells me that speaking in tongues gave them a prophesy, I take that to mean they’ve deepened or brodened their faith understanding.

I gave an example earlier of my person deepend or broader understanding of my faith. And nobody made a comment on it. Maybe because I didn’t want emotions and feeling attached to it.

Here it is agian: I never lose an argument with atheists on this subject. Atheist claim that materialism, naturalism, and the disipline to understand reality is all based in science and the scientific method. Yet you will discover that they will not give up their belief in human rights. Human rights philosophy is based upon objective morality…aka Moral Truth.

Moral Truth (Objetive Morality) cannot be proven using any naturalistic, scientific method. It is a spritual knowing. A knowing that even atheists take for granted. Naturalism is both a-theistic and a-moral. There is no room for any moral truth within Naturalim. None; no human rights and no such thing as evil.

Evil is a spirtual knowing. Yet atheists, who claim to reject spritualism, will not give up their belief in the existence of evil.

They will even use the problem of evil as an arguement against the Christian God (God is Truth…Moral Truth). But that whole arguement is completely dependent upon the actual, true existence of evil. If evil is real (an objective moral truth) then their Naturalism (that they wish to promote) is false. Naturalism rejects all moral realism. Atheists, how hold to a belief in human rights, have knowledge of the sprititual reality, that is their gift of faith from God, Yet they don’t realize it since I suspect they believe faith is more focused upon feelings. Or as so many of the TV preachers say “feel the power of the Holy Spirit!” That might be nice but for me it isn’t necessary’; I don’t desire that. I desire a deeper/broader knowing.

I agree with your statement that deepening of faith is about deepening knowing, but this dichotomy represents a Western misunderstanding of human psychology. Feelings are not intended to be separated from knowing, as has become common in Western culture. In fact, there are ways of knowing that are completely irrational. These are not less valuable ways of knowing (on the contrary, sometimes they are more valuable) and have as much worth as rational knowing. Feelings need not, and should not, be “something else”. On the contrary, God commands us to love Him with our whole heart, mind, soul and strength. The emotions are part of the heart and soul that he created within us by and through which we are to love Him. What is needed is a balance, and I do agree that much of Pentecostalism is feeling focused and imbalanced.
If someone tells me that speaking in tongues gave them a prophesy, I take that to mean they’ve deepened or brodened their faith understanding.
Tongues are really an “entry level” gift that can open the believer to the “higher” gifts such as prophesy. Yielding to the work of the Spirit requires much practice and appropriate spiritual direction, which is often lacking. This is why we see such a plethora of misuse of the gifts, particularly tongues.
I gave an example earlier of my person deepend or broader understanding of my faith. And nobody made a comment on it. Maybe because I didn’t want emotions and feeling attached to it.
No, in fact, I think it is an excellent example of the goal of the activity of the HS. Sorry for failing to affirm that, I got distracted with a different charismatic thread running elsewhere.
Code:
I desire a deeper/broader knowing.
I hope you don’t have to leave your emotions out!

We should not seek gifts, but the Giver of gifts.

God will bless those who love Him, in the way that He chooses.

Whatever is in His will for us will make us satisfied, contenct. If He wants you to be a prophet or healer then receive it from Him, because that is His will for you, but covetting these or any specific gifts is a mistake. If He does not will this for you, be content. Whatever His will is for you is perfect for you.

The one gift that we know that is universally in His will, for all of us, is love. God is love. Love is above all of the other particular gifts or graces, greater than all. If you have love you will be content. If you are content you know you don’t need anything else. If you do not have it you will never be content, and instead seek things that He gives to others, which might not be good for you.
“And I tell you, ask and you will receive, seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives, and the one who seeks finds; and the one who knocks, the door will be opened…If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the holy Spirit to those who ask him.” (Luke 11-13).
The Charismata are manifestations of the Holy Spirit at work within his children. We do need to ask. At the same time we need to remember to “seek first the kingdom of God. Where your treasure is, so too is your heart.” We seek the gifts not for their own sake but because of our desire for the Holy Spirit.

Jesus in telling us to pray, tells us to ask, but ask for what? Is it to be made prophets, or that our daily bread needs be met? “Give us this day our daily bread, and throw in the gifts of prophecy and tongues” ??

Someone wrote to me and said the apostles were charismatic. There is no doubt that they had powerful spiritual gifts. Did they get them by working themselves into emotional frenzy making a commotion and racket, raising a ruckus, carrying on with their hands waving over their heads, falling on the floor rolling around and passing out? I have been to these meetings (run by Catholics) and have good friends who think all of this is right on target. I do not disparage any spiritual gifts. Miracles are real. Should we be praying for the gift of prophecy or praying that God use us however He wills? Some people are not satisfied unless they have fireworks. While the apostles did indeed manifest spiritual power and gifts, in those days there apparently were also believers, according to Paul, who were clanging gongs, who manifested spiritual gifts and lacked the most important and only real essential one, love. I can’t say whether or not the participants in so called charismatic meetings today have love or not. God knows, not me. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that they do a lot of clanging. If we have love we will be satisfied. If we do not we won’t. We need nothing more. If God wants to give us more that is wonderful, but His love is sufficient.

Yes, love is what we should seek to have. If gifts are given of the Holy Spirit, these are for the building up of Christ’s Kingdom and for His glory alone. I cannot but marvel at the beauty of the gifts, though, and be enthusiastic about God’s designs. I am in awe of all the wonderful things of God. For instance, the beauty of nature, a glimpse at a newborn baby with overjoyed parents delighting in their little infant, witnessing someone doing a kindness for another person. These kinds of things bring me joy, as do the manifestations of the gifts that I have witnessed in others.

All these things point to our loving God. Yes, let us love God and one another more than anything else. This will bring our Lord great joy and happiness. Let us listen to each other in a spirit of love and share with each other in a spirit of love (ways which please our Lord).

In Jesus’ love,

Bernardine Lee

Yes, love is what we should seek to have. … Yes, let us love God and one another more than anything else.

If Christians do this and nothing else we will have victory, God’s kingdom will be ours here on earth. If we will the good of all and obey Him we win. “If a man loves me he will keep my commands”. There will be many other various and diverse gifts, but love comes first. If we have it we have heaven.

I agree with your statement that

I hope you don’t have to leave your emotions out!
I don’t have to. They are secondary. A person can be spiritually enlightend and there response can be a simple as simple as an “ah? I got it”. Somebody else’s response might be that of a charismtic high emotional rejoice. Which is more correct? More true? Neither. That spiritual experience may invoke an emotional response but it isn’t necessary.

The frustration I’m having with charismatics is that they, I believe, selfiishly are bringing more and more of their jazz-up way of doing religion into the Sunday mass. What about those of us who are more contimplative and find these mass to be a theatrical distraction from a meditative focus on the Mystery?

I know what you mean. I have been going to the Byzantine Mass because it is more reverent.

Years ago I went to a Renewal weekend and most everyone was full of emotion for weeks even months after. Then I stepped back and realized what it was…a do-it-yourself group psycology session maskerading as religion that someone had dreamed up and put together. I don’t know of anyone who’d go to another one.

But I must give this weekend credit for what it did do for me. It was something unintentional. That weekend got me on an internal questioning as to what is religion, spirituality, faith, and pop psycology. If the sacrements are not dependent upon feeelings and emotion (as per archbishop Martinez) then faith and spirtuality isn’t either. Faith and spirtuality is a knowing that goes beyond psychology. Emotionally, it could be as dry as the desert where Jesus spent his 40 days. But as Martinez points out, many of us don’t what that. We don’t want to ask for dryness and disolation.

I don’t think one need throw out the baby with the bathwater. There is an appropriate time and place for getting the emotions pumped up. It should not be an end in itself, but there are those mountaintop experiences. Peter, James, and John went up with Jesus and watched Him transfigured. Peter was so excited he wanted to stay!

Yes, faith is not dependent upon feelings. Deep spirituality is not either, but they need not be DEVOID of feelings. I think we tend toward one extreme or the other. One reason I left the faith was that I was unable to engage my emotions in the Mass. Now that I have been on a long Protestant sojourn, I have integrated feelings enough so that I am not “empty” during Mass. I think I spent many years going through the motions, disconnected from myself. I regret that I had to leave the Church to figure out how to integrate myself. There are desert times, and river of living wanter times, and neither need exclude the other.

Emotions and feelings are good things. God made us with them. They are not secondary, but integral parts of us, parts of the whole package, and parts of what we are. If we try to stifle or deny them on purpose we will harm ourselves. If we have no emotion we are dead, but we should not want to be emotional for the sake of being emotional. Emotional experience can be part of spiritual experience. When we experience God our whole beings are often engaged, including the emotions in powerful ways, but that is not the same as seeking emotional experiences or highs. It is easy to see how we get confused. If we experience God and we feel feel it in all parts of us, including the emotions, we can identify experiencing God with emotional highs and seek them. I believe I have the gift of tears and am often overwelmed by emotion when praying or thinking of God’s love. It is impossible to know when it will happen. It is not explainable, or controlable and I don’t know why it happens, but I accept it with gratitude. I did not ask for or seek this. It just happens and it is very emotional. I have no idea what benefit it is to anyone else, or that it proves or confirms anything, but it is consoling to me and seems to increase love in me. When it happens is generally in private prayer or at Divine Liturgy, and almost always during liturgies of Marian feastdays. I don’t like being noticed so I try to be private. The idea of drawing attention and making a noisy public spectacle trying to call down the Spirit or to create a spiritual experience or miracle seems disordered to me. Public prayer is good, but making a commotion on purpose seems improper. Maybe at times God wants someone to be loud and the center of attention. If that happens it is always good, but being loud and drawing attention to oneself as a way to try to turn on the Spirit or attempt to stir up emotions of others on one’s own initiative will always cause problems. I have seen prayers for the sick in charismatic meetings. They get very loud and emotional. Everyone lays their hands on the troubled person. People pray in tongues that no one knows what is being said, if anything more than gibberish. I have also seen people do this kind of thing for someone who is not present and claim healings for the sick person. Nothing happens. One of my best friends was virtually comatose for four years and there were pentecostal types claiming his healing for him. Did God inspire all the commotion? If He did, wouldn’t there have been a miraculous healing? I have seen these people also claim specific prophetic messages about what would happen in the Church, with great confidence and emotion thanking God ahead of time and none of it happened. They eventually left the Church and continue to make the same kind of noise. They don’t lose a step or show any embarassment or acknowledgment that their prophesies or claimed miracles were fake. They keep right at it maybe thinking it will work the next time around. This is really bad. If you claim to be speaking for God, you better be speaking for God.

We don’t want to ask for dryness and disolation.
Or the cross! We want to party, a spiritual party. But Jesus tells us to take up an instrument of torture, suffering and death, or we are not worthy of Him.

The 3 priests whose life in the Spirit touched me are Fr. Luke Zimmer, SSCC, Fr. John Bertolucci, and Fr. John Hampsch, CMF.

These priest spoke of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and shared about gifts of the Holy Spirit they were given. They were on fire for Jesus Christ and for the spreading of His Kingdom here on earth.

Fr. Luke was an evangelist. He spoke of agape love and stressed that this is what all people need to have in their hearts. Fr. Hampsch was a speaker. Interestingly enough, although he stuttered very badly, during his preaching about Jesus Christ he was able to speak clearly for all to hear and understand. He’s very knowledgeable about scripture and Roman Catholic Church theology.

Fr. John Bertolucci wrote a wonderful book, On Fire with the Spirit. He explains how he was baptized in the Holy Spirit.

A priest prayed over him: “Lord, let him be at peace. Let him relax and let go. because you want to do a marvelous thing in his life.” The more he prayed the more I relaxed, and the more I relaxed the more the Holy Spirit rushed in. Something marvelous certainly was happening to me.

Then the priest began praying in a language I thought was Hebrew. I assumed that he had learned that sacred language in the seminary. As I listened to him, an urge to pray out loud came over me. I opened my mouth and, to my complete surprise, began speaking in a new language, one I had never studied. Like Peter and Paul and other Christians throughout the centuries, I had received the gift of tongues! [p. 12]

I do believe that tongues is a gift given by the Holy Spirit. It is a mysterious gift we all wonder about. Some of us believe in it, others doubt it.
