So many are just way too sentimental for me. I do really like A Christmas Story because of its great good humor, and it is about the only one I can watch every year.
It is not a Christmas movie but having lived in Salzburg I also like when they (typically) show Sound of Music around the holidays. I still find the opening scene breathtaking, and I’ve been at the monastery and the church where they were married many times.

A Year Without a Santa Claus

Snow Miser and Heat Miser rock!

Yes! The George C. Scott version is my favorite too!

Last years I watched several CCs to compare them to my favorite. Everyone always raves about the Alastair Sim’s version, but I didn’t care for it. Can’t really give a reason other than the pacing and the weird Bob Cratchit!

And although there are parts of the Patrick Stewart version that I like (his dancing!), I didn’t like it as much as Scott’s version.

I love the ghosts in the Scott version, all of them. I especially like the Ghost of Christmas Past–IMO, it matches the novel’s description.

The only thing I’m a little put off by in the Scott version is the creepy Tiny Tim. He looks somewhat like a zombie with those dark circles around the eyes.

I also love the Mr. Magoo version–it’s the first version I remember seeing!

I love National’s Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation! Maybe it’s because Chicago is right around the bend from where I live, so I identify with it.

I don’t care if it has naughty words! I love it! It hits EVERY family Christmas snafu, all of them, even the bit with the mother asking if “this mole looks suspicious,” and the grandpa’s napping in front of the TV.

It’s so full of jokes and yet at the same time, manages to be touching.

LOVE IT! Watch it at least twice every Christmas season, and I usually watch it at least once during the summer.

Had a good cry last night watching, “It’s a Wonderful Life”. Might have to watch “Love Actually” tonight to boost my spirits.

I forgot this classic Dragnet Christmas episode, which was apparently so popular they made two versions of it, one in black and white and one in color.

I don’t like that Tiny Tim either, but it’s the teeth that weird me out.

Wouldn’t call these old classics as they are within the last 15 years, but every year I watch Jingle all the Way and Christmas with the Kranks as well as the Jim Carey version of The Grinch. Also watch the Santa Claus movie series each year

The George C. Scott Tiny Tim is the perfect Tiny Tim! He really looks like he was dying. My husband keeps making commentaries at the movie in a cockney accent “Oh, fatha, this is such a good goose…ahehk…thump”…Oh, Tiny Tim has snuffed it!. And yes, the teeth are creepy.

The Alister Sims Tiny Tim looks like he just has a limp.

My kid has had 13 surgeries and has never looked like that! He looks more like the kid that’s supposed to pop out from under the robe of the Ghost of Christmas Present!

Yeah, I had several surgeries at the point (compound fracture left tibia & fibula age 2 1/2), and I never looked that sick either, probably because it was just my leg. When I looked up what Tiny Tim had to make him so sick, but could be cured easily, Wikipedia (if you could trust the site) said he had renal tubular acidosis (type 1), which can be cured with something like baking soda, and possibly rickets (which could be cured with better nutrition). It also said taking him into the country air would help.

The problem with that Tiny Tim is that they did overkill on that “I am sick” make-up. He looked like he was going to die that Christmas, not the next. 😀

Charlie Brown’s Christmas is one of my favorites. “That’s what Christmas is all about Charlie Brown.” Others are Little Drummer Boy, Santa Claus is comin to town, Yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus. It’s a Wonderful Life I usually start when Clarence enters. I like many A Christmas Carol movies. Some already mentioned in this thread and others not mentioned are the ones from the 1930s with Seymour Hicks and Reginald Owen.

The Muppets version of A Christmas Carol (with Michael Caine as Scrooge) is probably my favorite version.

Love Bell’s of St. Mary’s. Also, Rudolph, It’s a Wonderful Life, Muppet’s Christmas Carol, The First Christmas (The Story of the First Christmas Snow).

I also love the Mr. Magoo version–it’s the first version I remember seeing!
With razzleberry dressing! 🙂

A few others not yet mentioned:
  1. My favorite Rankin Bass special is “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”. It somehow manages to combine all the facets of the Santa Claus mythos (e.g. Why do his reindeer fly? Why is he called Santa Claus and Kris Kringle?) and put them together with great songs.
  2. My mom loved a version of A Christmas Carol that I think was called An American Christmas Carol. It starred Henry Winkler as a depression-era Scrooge.
  3. There was an animated special called “Christmas Every Day” or something like that. A little girl makes a wish that every day was Christmas, and it’s fun for a while until everyone gets sick of it.
