That’s simply not true, unless being “against the Church” means “unwilling to accept that our sacraments are invalid and return unconditionally to Catholicism, abandoning the distinctive expressions of Christian faith that have developed among us whether or not they are incompatible with Catholic teaching, and of course accepting all Catholic teaching as true, even the teachings that were defined after our ancestors left.”

Many mainline Protestant churches would be happy to enter into full communion with Rome unconditionally, with each side keeping their current theology and practices. I am not saying that Rome ought to agree to this, only that the obstacle is primarily on Rome’s side.

Protestants originally left because they opposed some aspect of Catholicism. That is not why we are Protestants today. We are Protestants today because that is how we have received the Christian Faith, and we are not going to abandon our heritage unless and until we are convinced it is wrong.

Edwin
Rome wouldn’t concede to Protestant theology, because there are portions (perhaps large portions) of it not in agreement with Catholic theology. I fail to see how it’s Rome’s problem, when it is Protestants who had changed the original theology that had been in place for nearly 1500 years.

What you don’t understand what I’m saying is this: Protestant theology is largely anti-Catholic. Not in the sense that they hate Catholics, but their theology in some fashion or another is against Catholicism. Hence the prefix “anti-.” No one Protestant faction or sect has the exact same theology as the Catholic Church, otherwise, they wouldn’t be Protestants. So, yes, most Protestant theology is anti-Catholic.

And I understand why Protestants wouldn’t want to leave their faith. It could be because Protestantism, at least in America, has become a cultural thing, just as Catholicism was in Spain and much of Souther Europe. I didn’t want to leave Methodism, but that’s a different story entirely.

These protestant sects, I believe there are about 33,000 of them have no regard for Church History at all.How often you hear their pastors speaking with such authority distorting facts; I wonder why they do that-- feed their flock with “lies”. One of their favourite is accusing the Catholic Church of adding the Deuterocanonical books(Apocrypha) at the Council of Trent in 1546, when in truth they have removed them from the Bible after the reformation. These books were there in the Greek version of the Bible which the Christians used. The Greek Orthodox Church, which split in 1054,still has these books in their Bible, they have not removed them!
I couldn’t believe it when I actually read this elsewhere the other day. I don’t get why some of my fellow protestants are so bad at history.

Well, I think you’re using “anti-Catholic” so broadly that it becomes meaningless. By this logic, any theology is anti- every other theology incompatible with it. It’s a tautology.

Generally “anti-Catholic” is used to denote a preoccupation with attacking Catholicism and/or a denial that Catholicism is truly Christian. I think this is a much more useful way of using the term, although of course I cannot make you adopt it.

Obviously Protestants at the very least disagree with some of the ecclesiological claims of Catholicism. If that’s being “anti-Catholic,” I plead guilty!

AMEN! I assert that each and every group that has splintered off from the One True Church has a split personality: they spend 50% of their time being anti-Catholic and 50% being Christian. Only Catholics, and soon we pray, the Orthodox and some Anglicans, are Christian 100% of the time.

As to the SDA Church, they print books that tend to conceal their SDA origins, and they tend to conceal that they were founded by a woman, Ellen Gould White. However, in their Seven Mysteries Explained book, chapter six, they reveal the antichrist to be, yes you guessed it, the Pope! But, Revelation tells of only one antichrist. We have had 265 Popes. Which one are they talking about?

All non-Catholic churches must be anti-Catholic, otherwise the reason for their very existence is called into question.

Christ’s peace be always with you.

As was said earlier Protestants exist because they live out their own name. They chose to leave the Church. What more needs to be said?

Hippy Dippy radio and TV personalities come along who aren’t Catholic. They make their living first by picking and choosing from the Catholic Church but mostly by condemning the Church.

Any chart would be outdated as soon as it was made.

That’s a good point. I was protestant because I was born to parents who worshipped in the protestant tradition, not because I was born protesting the Catholic Church.

I do not see becoming Catholic as a rejection of my heritage, because first and foremost I was taught that the important thing about being a Christian is following Christ regardless of the “denomination” one affiliates with.

I was very relunctant to leave the Baptist tradition I was raised in. I thought my family would have seen it as a slap in the face, but they haven’t. They have been very supportive. They are turned off by cultural Catholicism, but what helped is they knew many practicing Catholics who they pointed out were some of the most Godly people they knew.

Edwin,

Good stuff, as usual, but I’d add a wrinkle.

While it is true that Lutherans still confess the Papacy to be Antichrist, they do not believe the Roman Catholic Church to not be a Christian Church. Rather, they believe it to be the Christian Church in captivity.

Reformed Christians as a rule tend to take the position that the RCC is no longer Christian or at the very least apostate.

There are exceptions, but generally it breaks down that Lutherans believe that you can still hear the Gospel in a Catholic Church; that since that Church still believes all the great credal articles, one can still see Christ alone as one’s Savior.

So, Lutherans would say that all Catholics who believe what their church teaches are Christian because of baptism and what they believe while believing things that Lutherans consider erroneous.

Most Reformed Christians, on the other hand, would say that if a Catholic is a Christian, it is inevitably *in spite of *his being Catholic and never because of it.

Interesting. The Greeks also have within their canon text which the Catholic Church excludes from its canon. Does this mean that the Catholic canon is incomplete or defective?
How come no one has answered this post?

I would say that the churches that splintered off from the catholic church did not leave the true church, but at the time of there splintering they moved closer to God and further away from disobedience. You say 50% being anti-catholic, I say 100% because in being anti-catholic (the church docrine, NOT the individuals) one is being fed up with apostacy. Now I am not going to single out the catholics because the majority of the other denominations with there man made beliefs and rituals are not being obedient to the Word either. When I say anti-catholic let me rephrase that to anti-denominationalism or anti-worldliness, or anti-paganism, or anti-give me your tithes and take my word for everything and leave your salvation in the hands of some priest or pastor or homosexual masquerading as one or the either. denominations are in most cases leading the sheep to the wrong pathway the WIDE one that we should avoid. The blatant disregard for the Word of God and the teaching in the Bible are insane. I find it hard to believe that a person that has faith and has read the Bible can belong to and follow churches that show such obvious disrespect to God. I dont believe that the majority of catholics or other christians are bad or want to follow disobedience but they dont read their Bibles or they would know that most churches today are jokes that may have started out pure but have gotten greedy or given in to the world and stop fighting against the homosexuals, abortions, and worship and prayer to anything other that the Lord Jesus Christ. They blindly follow their clergy to death instead of life.
again you wrote:

The SDA is another church blinded by satan, but I do agree with them about the pope. out of the 265 I believe all of them have added to the anti-christ spirit that is in our world today. Why is it that Jesus washed others feet yet the pope extends his foot to be kissed.

I would say that the chart would start out like this:

anyone whom follows the Bible and the Teaching of Christ are against any false doctrines, pagan or ritualistic ideas and practices, of the catholic church and her daughters (denominations that may not claim the catholic church as its mother but follows many of her docrines that are anti-biblical).

But of course this is just my opinion

Read your Bibles please and study the contradictions within the church doctrines for your own sakes. Your priest/pastor isnt responsible for your service to God, you and I will be held accountable for our own actions.

God Bless all who seek truth

P.S.

I apologize if I have offended but it will be temporary if you realize where the churches have gone wrong and you quit supporting the Men that want to be looked on as gods and go to a church that is interested in your relationship with Jesus and not just your pocket book.

The Bible and the Teaching of Christ have been preserved by and in the Catholic Church. If you spent some time at the Catholic Answers Library you might see things a little differently. Nothing that the Catholic Church teaches is anti-Biblical, contrary to popular anti-Catholic propaganda and rhetoric.

Blessings to you!

It was excluded but the Council of Trent did not declare those books in error. They were just not added in the Catholic Canon of Scripture.

I believe the Eastern Catholics uses the same Bible was the Greek Orthodox.

To some degree, every Protestant sect is Anti-Catholic, in the sense that they are against the Church in some fashion. Most of them will deny this, but if it weren’t true, they wouldn’t be Protestants.

As for the ardent slanderers of Protestantism, I would have to say several brands of Evangelicalism and Fundamentalism make such claims against the Church. Seventh-Day Adventists have it ingrained in their theology, I believe. Someone correct me, if I’m wrong.

Hi

I think it is not useful for a religion to highlight differences of one denomination with the other with a tinge of bitterness. I would suggest that instead of that peaceful dialogue with other denominations should be promoted to remove differences. Unity among the Christianity should be done with sincere efforts.

Thanks

Dear Paarsurrey,

You are correct. It is not useful to highlight one theology against others, one faith against others. My faith is mine, and I am responsible to God for my faith, and your faith is yours, and you are also responsible to God for your faith. Differences are very logical given that we are physically and culturally different. But, I am sure that out of our differences, there should be some common similarities. That similarities are what I believe that we must explore.

You really need to learn what the Catholic Church truly teaches. For instance, the Church teaches that any sex outside of marriage (including homosexual) and abortion are very grave sins. Also, the Catholic Church is the church that decided which books to put into the New Testament canon, so to claim that the Church isn’t Biblical is rather silly.

Amen! 👍 Well, I knew the “50%” assertion might raise an eyebrow, but the response you replied to tends to prove the assertion. Anyone who is so sure of the “satanic influence” over the Body of Christ has come to this belief likely through some sort of pastoral influence, or exposure to the horrible and misleading tracts of an anti-Catholic professional such as Jack Chick. To be as charitable as I can toward those who attack the Truth, I will grant that they do this out of ignorance.

Nevertheless, such a profound and passionate dislike of the Catholic Church can only result from a lack of personal study of the world’s oldest organization. (“the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” - Jesus Christ in Matthew 16:18) This is a classic example of biting the hand which feeds you-since every Christian denomination, or “non-denomination”(sheep without a shepherd?) uses scripture which was canonized under the authority of a Pope.

If the source is rotten, the product is rotten. (Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.- Jesus Christ in Matthew 7:17) Maybe the “bible” Christians are actually paying a debt of gratitude to Catholicism without realizing it. How can one believe the message while reviling the messenger? Did not God Himself also choose the messenger? (A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. - Jesus Christ in Matthew 7:18).

:Bible" Christians have some soul-searching to do, since they must trust in the Catholic Church for everything they believe. But, isn’t it obvious that if they believed the entire canon of scripture and not just some pieces of the puzzle, they would realize that they should be Catholic. Oh, but submitting (“If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me”. Jesus Christ in Luke 9:23) is such distasteful work!

Since we have no power and God is all power, only prayer will prevail over those who will not believe.

Christ’s peace be always with you.

.

True. The fact is that even Orthodox churches sometimes has slighty different OT cannons.
The books that were excluded at Trent were considered repetitive by Rome and not teaching anything new. But they are not wrong and Eastern Catholic Churches have them.
The Prayer of Manasseh is beautiful.
But the fact is that Trent did have autorithy to canonize books. And that the book that remained had some key doctrines that separate Catholics and Orthodox from Protestant even today.

Every non-Catholic religion is anti-Catholic to some extent:

Islam: Rejection of Christ’s divinity is practiced here. Mohammed, a false prophet is elevated above Christ and Islamic history is full of brutal violence against Catholics.

Judaism: Rejection of Christ (and hence the Church) is a central tenant of modern Judaism. One must only read the Talmud or look at the official doctrine of any Jewish sect to realize this. There was a time period where Jews persecuted Catholics.

Protestantism: While Christian, it rejects the authority of the Church. Some sects are on fairly benevolent, others are shrilly anti-Catholic and heretical (aka Calvinists).

Eastern Orthodoxy: Probably the least anti-Catholic of all faiths, though the rejection of the Papacy is disturbing.

Pagans: They not only reject Christ, but they reject a monotheistic creator altogether, preferring to worship wood and stones, violating Gods first commandment, that the Church teaches. Pagans did horrific things to Catholics.

Atheism: The most abhorrent of all creeds. Actively tries to destroy the Church to this very day.

Re: chart of anti-Catholic religions?

Hello, and welcome to CAF! You’ve made quite a splash with your very first post here. You might want to familiarize yourself with the Forum Rules.
Thank you, sorry if I broke any rules, it was not my intent and I tried to emphasize that I was only stating my opinion and not attacking any one individual.
So, since you seem to know where to find the Truth, which church is the One founded by Christ and His Apostles, which would have to be almost 2000 years old, has had doctrinal consistency and taught the Truth for all of those (almost) 2000 years?
The One True Church founded by Christ has been almost non-existent since the begining of the catholic church. I believe for most of the last 2000 yrs their has only been a remnant that has held true to the Word of God. I believe that No denomination has had a consistent TRUE doctrine. I believe that every time God has given an individual a revelation of truth it has flourished for a time and then that persons followers always want to organize to the point of rituals and adding their own twists to the doctrines.
I am going off of information from studying the word, history, and from catholics that I know personnally. I wont try to judge anyone or think that people that I have talked to can speak for others but I do know that the doctrines these individuals follow and the doctrines the catholic church followed in the past, and some that I know they hold to now are inconsistent with the Bible and with doctrines they held to in their own past history. That is a good idea though when I get time I will visit this library, although as of right now I would find it hard to believe that it is not corrupted.

One of the men I know that is a catholic prays to saints and to mary, this is blatantly contrary to the Word and is pagan worship. If this is not still a catholic doctrine then why not, although it must be if you say the catholic church has been consistent with its doctrines. Popes and priests in the past purchased there way into the church, tortured and murdered millions of protestants, Changed their way of baptizing from the Lord Jesus Christ to the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost, Allowed Charlemagne who controled the nicene council, Sold indulgences (which I hope to God the papacy doesnt still do this sick practice), allow priests to forgive sins and give absolution, teach that saints protect and help us in our daily activities, etc etc etc…

These are just a few of the things that I say are anti-biblical, again if these are not current practices of the catholic church let me know. The catholics I have had discussions with may be confused, I doubt the historians are completely ignorant of the catholic churches practices but everyone makes mistakes. The Bible on the other hand does not make mistakes so please let us discuss why the catholic church is the true Bride of Christ. I may have never had a in-depth conversation with a catholic that was educated correctly in his/her doctrines so you will probably enlighten me to a few things.
Are you open to having your opinion changed?
If someone can show me im wrong using the Bible then I am more than open to having my opinion changed. 🙂
I read my Bible. It was because of reading the Gospels that I left the Baptist church that I loved and am now a Catholic. The Bible made me do it!
I would love to know what you read specifically that made you decide on the catholic church. I was in the pentacostal church for about 25yrs and got fed up of their worldly ways. I am not in a denomination now, I am a Christian that follows the Bible I wont follow some guy or church that wants to give me his/their own interpretation of the Word.

God Bless U

I think its rather egocentric of religion X to describe all others as “anti-X” - people do have other things to think of than the Churches to which they do not belong.

I didn’t give Catholicism a moment’s attention for most of of my life as an Anglican 🙂 - amazing & unbelievable as it may seem, Catholicism is really not important for plenty of people. Why should it be ?
