Good postHi Mark –
I hope that you can get some professional help and guidance for your issues. It seems to me that you are dealing with things are psychological and medical issues that go beyond just trying to deal with it morally and spiritually – something that behavioral therapy could help treat, practical and professional guidance and training that goes beyond any help or advice you can get from a forum online. That is not to say that therapy would take place of the sacraments. A person benefits from both the sacraments AND therapy. But it seems you’re dealing with something multi-faceted that warrants help from various points of view, not just spiritually but from a medical and psychological standpoint as well.
I see someone who is suffering immensely, and while the things we suffer from differ, I can only hope to share some insights that I have gained in the past several months.
This past year, I have been dealing with a health matter, an iatrogenic condition (caused by the wrong medical treatment) that has been the worst thing I’ve ever been through in my entire life. I can’t even begin to describe how awful it has been, and how much I have suffered. I never thought I could experience anything as bad in my life as when I had lost my mother, but I was wrong.
It has lead me to do a lot of reading about redemptive suffering, what it means to suffer, and what it means to be happy in this life.
I don’t think life really is meant to be miserable as a Catholic or a Christian. There are a lot of good and beautiful things in this life that we can be thankful for, but they are often fleeting. I guess when we do find suffering coming our way, from the viewpoint of how Christians regard suffering, we can at least try to find some purpose in it.
The long and short of it, is that we suffer with Christ, and we can offer up our sufferings for the help, conversion and salvation of souls in this life and beyond. The saints often felt great joy in this. Is this something that I fully understand? Definitely not – I’m not much of a saint. More often than not, I don’t feel a lot of “joy” in my suffering, that’s just being honest, but I do try to place some trust that I can unite it with Christ in hopes that it will help someone, somewhere out there. I don’t expect it to make my suffering go away, but at the very least, it’s better than nothing. Some days it does bring me some consolation, and over time, the sufferings have allowed me to slowly grow in holiness in a genuine way, and have taught me patience and compassion.
I don’t know if that helps any, I just thought I’d offer my insights. Most of all though, in the meantime, I really do hope you find some practical and professional guidance for your struggles. Whatever sufferings I may experience today, I will offer them up for you. God bless you and let us know how things go.
