Curious…what do expect her to do? Hog tie him and drag him off to the nearest homeless shelter where he can be locked away from the “normal” people?

You do realize that homeless people are not stray animals to be rounded up, neutered and rehomed, right? They have the freedom to go whereever they want, just like everyone else.

Considering his appearance, he apparently has access to a shower and laundry facilities.

Good point. Who is to say that the man doesn’t stay at a homeless shelter? I’m pretty sure that people who make use of shelters don’t stay there 24 hours a day.

Come down to the Union Rescue Mission on Confederate Blvd. in my town and you can have your pick of such homeless “preachers.”

Don’t ruin a good thing. Those other “preachers” aren’t being verbally assaulted like this one. Apples and oranges, friend.

And I’ve had my share of the other ones (among other types) in the NYC subway system for over 10 years.

If he were a drunkard getting the same treatment from some crowd, no one on this Forum would care. Reading a Bible in public doesn’t elevate you to some special status.

Um…we’re supposed to see Christ in everyone. And that would be my point.

No. They’ll throw you out. The one I’m familiar with starts filling up around supper time (no wonder) but makes the men leave at 6:00 am. Not bad in summer, but a *itch in the winter. There’s no one sleeping there or hanging out during the day. But, that’s in Little Rock. Your town’s shelter may be more liberal with its clients.

The proof will be in the pudding. If Romney wins, those people can attribute his victory to Mr. Cathy; if Obama wins, then all those folks who bought chicken sandwiches as a sign of solidarity with Cathy will have to wait until 2016 for a chance to see victory.

I don’t have a dog in that fight, so don’t support either candidate.

I guarantee you every homeless person knows where a shelter is.

They may, and they may use them if the shelters are not full. And, they fill up very quickly when temperatures drop.

Even so, how do these unfortunates get to the shelters? Buses don’t run untl late, at least hereabouts, and those men don’t always have the fare. It’s also difficult to hitchhike if you look down-and-out.

How would letters of solidarity with Chick-fil-A equate to a Romney victory? The people who bought sandwiches already accomplished what they set out to do - support a business that was being vilified for its support of traditional marriage.

Like I said, apples and oranges. Those references are nothing compared to this guy being surround and verbally assaulted. Sure, there are sure to be similar cases, even physically violent cases. But we are talking about* this *gentleman at the moment, and I see Christ in him. Like I said in my last post, we are to see Christ in everyone. If you don’t then that’s not my problem.

If all you want is the last word, be my guest.

In NYC, I’d expect her to call 311, who’d provide help if the street person wanted it.

Same here, but they’re not so much rounded up as invited to come along to a shelter. If they choose to stay in the street and risk freezing to death, they can’t be forced into a shelter. In NYC, you see some of those sleeping on the sidewalk on the grates that are over the Subway stations. Not warm by any means, but enough to prevent freezing to death - usually.

Right. What evidence is there that he needed to be “rounded up?” He certainly wasn’t going to freeze to death in the middle of the day during the summer.

Sure, it’s wrong to make a public fool out of a drunkard or a man who uses the street for a toilet, but that doesn’t make him special even if he has a Bible. I’m not so sure that some Christians might uncharitably not refrain from mocking him or calling the cops down on him.

One thing I try to teach my children is that we are always just one step from being there. I hope that by our many, many volunteer work that my children and I do for the homeless, will teach them to never look at these people as some kind of burden. We don’t know the story of the guy who is using the Subway car as his sleeping bed or “toilet” as you seem to keep pointing out.

They want to discourage people from giving the homeless the odd dollar or two, which leaves them without the help they really need. A lot of those street people have mental problems that the change in your purse isn’t going to help.

That’s not true unless you are close to being desperately poor.

Not “the guy,” but the guys and even the women. If it were one person in all of NYC, we can live with that. And, what difference does someone’s story make if you have to step over his feces when you are going down into the Subway?

We don’t need the federal government to collectivize our charity.

I’m willing to bet private Catholic charities like St. Vincent dePaul and our own St. Patrick’s Center and Our Lady’s Inns do a lot more for the homeless than the federal government. Especially when addressing the dignity and respect of the person.
