In NYC, I’d expect her to call 311, who’d provide help if the street person wanted it.

That does little good in Chicago.

Yes - to sleep in Subway cars, to use Subway platforms and stairwells as toilets (and not just as urinals!), to be professional panhandlers…

Well…that’s not stereotyping at all.

EDIT- Also have never seen a homeless person in Iowa, Nebraska or South Dakota using a subway for anything, let alone a toilet.

We don’t need the federal government to collectivize our charity.

I didn’t suggest that.

I’m willing to bet private Catholic charities like St. Vincent dePaul and our own St. Patrick’s Center and Our Lady’s Inns do a lot more for the homeless than the federal government.

Of course they do, that goes without saying, but as organizations they do more for the poor than individuals can as St. Lucy suggested.

Especially when addressing the dignity and respect of the person.

Yes, but the people employed by some government social service program are not heartless beasts. Some may even be Catholics. Most probably treat their clients with charity, dignity, and respect. One doesn’t sign away one’s humanity when he or she draws a city, state, or federal paycheck.

There are enough who do. NYC has millions of people, and thousands of such homeless people.
