Menino says he can’t actively block Chick-fil-A
Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino repeated today that he doesn’t want Chick-fil-A in Boston, but he backed away from a threat to actively block the fast-food chain from setting up shop in the city
“I can’t do that. That would be interference to his rights to go there,” Menino said, referring to company president Dan Cathy, who drew the mayor’s wrath by going public with his views against same-sex marriage
The mayor added: “I make mistakes all the time. That’s a Menino-ism”
The Herald first reported last week that Menino warned “it will be very difficult” for Chick-fil-A to obtain licenses for a restaurant in Boston
The Atlanta-based chicken chain has been eyeing a space near the Freedom Trail and across the street from City Hall, among other locations, for its first eatery in Boston
“I sent (the landlord) a letter, but that’s all. There’s no pressure by me to allow this place to be rented,” he said
Menino acknowledged Cathy’s freedom to express his views, but was unapologetic about his own tough stance that’s become national news
“Some people might not like these positions, but as mayor of the city of Boston, you can’t run and hide, and I’ll always protect people’s rights,” Menino said. “I’m right out front there and if people don’t like it, I feel sorry for them. But I’m the mayor of Boston and I get elected to make my opinions known”

The ACLU is quite correct, but why shouldn’t they be? Funny how they’re attacked whether they’re defending a right of Nazis to march or supporting some liberal cause.

What we have here is a typical case of blowhard politicians. Give each one an enema and they’ll shrink down to the size of a hand puppet.
That has to be the funniest analogy for “full of ***” I have ever heard. I am stealing it and making it mine.

Halftime idea for next years’ Chick-fil-a Bowl. America’s* CRAZIEST *Mayor Contest!:whacky:

Chicago, New York and Boston currently lead the nominees.

Crime? What can you do?

Sodas? Traditional marriage? Game ON! :frighten:

In Chicago Mayor Emmanuel proposes changing the “protect and serve” motto on Police Cars to “Eat Less Chikin!” and the city’s name to “Tofuago”.

I hate to be the one that bursts the fun bubble for CaptFun, but there is no Mayor Emmanuel here in the great city of Chicago. Hopefully, you are not a resident in our city to make such a silly mistake.
His name is spelled Emanuel.
Maybe you can educate me about how this is an important name for those who believe in the Abrahamic God.?

Lol. Well thanks there Strawberry. If misspelling Mayor Rahm’s name is the silliest mistake I’ve made today I will sleep well tonight.

I was actually born in Chicago and love the town. I was warned by my suburban Chicago relatives not to go near my Grandparents’ old neighborhood on the West Side however (they imagined danger and I wasn’t looking for adventures). I was bummed Google maps hasn’t even gone down Jackson Boulevard anywhere near my childhood home there though.

As to your last invitation … I risk misspelling the name further as I’ve seen it rendered Emmanuel, Immanuel and even Hebrew old school Imanu’el … but the name is applied to Jesus Christ and means “God with us” or “God is with us.”

For Catholics like me “God is with us” recalls the incarnation and birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. Bethlehem or Beth lehem means “House of Bread.”

I did give Rahm an extra m, when I should have given him a D in diplomacy.

If the Chick-fil-a people have a sense of humor they could ring the city with franchises in the bordering suburbs. Their ONE Chicago restaurant is now getting a lot of publicity and its private owner Lauren Silich is making nice - which could be a windfall for her.

I honestly am hoping these mayors do try to block the franchise. Seeing the 5 seconds that a judge would take to decide who wins the lawsuit would be quite entertaining me thinks. 😃

People who preach tolerance are the most intolerant people you will ever meet.

This is so funny. There is a Chik-fil-A food truck in the District (DC) and the local news covered a protest at it. Lots of chanting of cute phrases and such. People ten deep in line waiting to buy lunch. Kinda funny. They interviewed customers who were “pro-gay” and didn’t mind, people who were Christian and there on purpose, and people who just liked Chik-Fil_a.

They interviewed a protest organizer who said they weren’t advocating a boycott, “they just wanted people to know”. Know what? That the Cathy family stands up for traditional values? Chik-Fil_A itself does not “:discriminate”. They don’t charge gay people more for a Coke. They don’t refuse service to gay people. They even hire gay people.

So, what’s the big deal?

it’s a simple matter of, “I’m in a position of power and I don’t like the opinions of these people. So I’m gonna do anything I can to keep them away and damage them just because I can.”

Just as people who agree have the right to voice their support, people who disagree have the right to express their displeasure. Welcome to America. It’s messy, but it’s still the greatest country in the world.

Chick Fil A is a franchise business and it is run as a tight ship. In Forbes magazine I found this:
Chick-fil-A is run by Cathy and his sons Dan T., chief operating officer, and Donald (a.k.a. Bubba), a senior vice president. They screen prospective operators for their loyalty, wholesome values and willingness to buy into Chick-fil-A’s in-your-face Christian credo, espoused often by Cathy, an evangelical Southern Baptist who says “the Lord has never spoken to me, but I feel Chick-fil-A has been His gift.”
Franchise owners are likely to be of the same mindset as Mr Cathy because they are chosen that way. Which is perfectly fine, but don’t moan and cry when people don’t agree with your values. Everyone here complains vociferously about gay people who protest, who complain about not having equal rights and so on-so don’t imitate them! Don’t adopt a victim mentality everytime someone disagrees with your position. Stand firmly and proudly and exhibit BETTER behavior than those you condemn.

Seeker, I believe people are “whining and moaning” not because the gay supporters are disagreeing, but because two government officials of major cities ARE discriminating against Chick-Fil-A because of its owner christian values, and support of traditional marriage. Furthermore, people are “whining and moaning” because the owner of Chick-Fil-A only spoke in support of traditional marriage, and nothing was said about gays. This has been changed by the media who has said that the owner of Chick-Fil-A actually spoke in favor of an anti-gay movement. Thus, yes, we will “whine and moan” against this blatant evidences of discrimination against christians through government authority, and against the libel claimed of the owner of Chick-Fil-A.

No discriminating. Even the ACLU said that they couldn’t dfo that.

So, they didn’t mean what they said when they said they will block Chick-Fil-A?? Is this another words mean other words like Obama’s You didn’t build that? 🤷

They meant it, but it was just like what a lot of conservatives say - nonsense. 😦

I think the two mayors mainly were grandstanding for the media. I think they both realize they would lose really quickly if they tried to deny a business license or manipulate zoning in some way to keep the franchise out. Chik-Fil-A would sue the two cities, and rightfully so, and would win pretty quickly. It would only cost the cities a bunch of money in legal fees. I think they both just wanted to cause a big uproar, and they succeeded.

Apparently today the mayor of Boston has quietly admitted to a few media outlets that his threats about zoning and business licenses were empty.

Yes, but the mayor of Boston also admitted sending a letter to the landlord of the building CFA was consdering warning him about leasing to CFA. That’s a very troubling overreach of power.
