The discussion also addressed the matter of when the perpetrator is the penitent. There are a number of ways in which a priest, in confession, might learn of child sexual abuse, including:
  • from the perpetrator penitent;
  • from the victim penitent;
No, I meant that’s the current point of discussion in legal/ clergy circles here. Victim discussing crime in Reconcilliation and perp as 3rd party.

If the perp confesses ts a different issue.

We just have to wait and see what happens with civil law and subsequent Canon Law.

Are you referring to verbal abuse, or do you mean the priest exited his cubicle, then entered the room where the penitent is located (passing through the Church to do this). Or invited the victim to exit their cubicle and enter the priest’s? Or are you envisaging a different room structure?
It’s very difficult to accept , but a % of historic child sexual abuse occurred in the confessional cubicles. The typical old fashioned ones. And I don’t really want to know, nor retell how this occurred. Evil always finds a way.
