Here is MY completely unscientific take on these numbers from my own experience:

Background:
I am a Catholic convert who believes everything the Faith teaches, including the call to love my neighbor as well as the condemnation of the sin of homosexuality. So, I have many friends and loved ones who are homosexual and I probably could do a better job at helping them go to Heaven, but I digress.

The study:
I have 170 facebook friends, representing a wide variety of people I have known throughout my entire life. I have 7 friends who are openly homosexual. I am relatively confident that the rest are heterosexual, although I will allow for those who may be latent.

Analysis: So, 7 out of 170 is a little over 4%. Allowing a generous 2% increase for latency, I am going with a range of 4%-6%. Oddly enough, this falls almost precisely between the pro-homosexual and anti-homosexual numbers, which seem to make it very credible indeed!

cbrownell, I think 4-6% is still high.

I read an article written in the 90s that basically said the rate is around 10% in the major cities, and under 2% in the rural areas, which I would believe. When you combine them, you do get closer to 2% than 4-6%.

But, really, does it matter how many people identify as gay? If the gay group reaches a certain level, do they win something? Do they suddenly gain acceptance? Nope.

From whence did this 10% statistic come? In the 1940’s and 1950’s Alfred Kinsey did the field research for his widely touted series of reports on human sexual behavior, the Kinsey Reports. One of his “findings” was the famed 10% homosexual statistic supposedly realized by using his “Kinsey Scale” to measure sexual orientation.

**Contradictory Reports

**However, the reported statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and the 200 Census show much, much lower figures than the famed 10% findings. And they aren’t the only ones.
  • The CDC reported that a 2002 National Survey of Family Growth set the number closer to 2.8% of adults claiming homosexuality.
  • In 1993, USA Today reported that only 2.3% of males ages 20 to 30 said they had a same-sex experience in the last decade.
  • In 1991, the National Opinion Research Center found that respondents who claimed they were active homosexuals only numbered .7%. (that is point 7)
  • As far back as 1988 a Canadian survey found that 98% of first-year college students under 25 indicated they were heterosexual.
  • And the 2000 Census found that only ***.42% of American households consisted of same sex, unmarried couples as heads of households. This is less than 1%.

Teen 4 Christ
  • Read “Out from Under” and see how miserable it is to be raised by two gay men that all so often turns into 20 gay men. Sin is sin. Sex is only for marriage Man and Woman. Also read theology of the body for teens to discover how incredible and unique you are.
It is good that you have compassion for people bound by sin. The most compassionate thing you can do is help them out of that sin of the flesh (lust). Sin seperates us from God’s love in this life and for eternity if we do not repent (turn away from sin and ask for God’s foregiveness and go to confession to receive the sacrament of reconcillation)

Hope that helps you understand what is at stake with the gay marriage issue.

Love,
Your Brother in Christ + Ave Maria

Thanks for the book suggestions, the first one…no way lol, but I might give the 2nd one a look.
🙂

Back OT:

Big deal? so a study says people are more likely to be gay, i’ve met many people raised by gay parrents, and you know what? none are gay.
🙂

Just a couple of unrelated statements, for what they are worth:

Kids raised by homosexuals are more likely to experiment sexually and ‘try out homosexuality’. They are more likely to embrace homosexuality rather than condem it and/ or to live celibately if they experience same sex attraction.

What we have found genetically is some people are identified as risk-takers, and as such, are more likely to engage in risky behavior (drugs, drinking, multiple sexual partners, abnormal sexual activity etc) in order to satisfy themselves…thus, we can say that genetically speaking, homosexuals are risk takers…the fact that they are more likely to engage in the risky behaviors mentioned supports this.
